a look at traditional Gio/Man ethnic tribe in Côte d’Ivoire
On the way to the Stilt Dance village Silakoro, we dropped by a traditional Gio (Dan) village to study their tribal culture for a bit.
In the north of Man, bordering Liberia and Guinea, there’re quite a few Dan ethnic tribes, their terrain ranges from forests in the south to savanna in the north. Seeing the switch from forest to savannna on the way to the north was fun. I learnt the « fromage tree » from a French expat who also went for the trip.
To get to the Dan villages, hiring a car is necessary, if you don’t plan to drive by yourself, many guides can be found on the facebook group « West Africa Travellers ». Tourism in CI is far from developed, of course it can be slightly better than its neighbour countries such as Liberia or Sierra Leone, etc. I don’t think there are many other ways to get there. Good thing is everything feels authentic here.
It was quite interesting for me to learn about the Dan people’s huts, how their society works, the sacred forest, etc.
