Medina as Non Muslim - Solo Travel in Saudi Arabia المدينة المنورة المملكة العربية السعودية أجنبي

Medina is the second holiest city in Islam after Mecca, and one of the most visited places in Saudi Arabia. As a non Muslim, it was unsure whether I could travel to the city center, reading conflicting reports beforehand. I decided to check for myself, and found that I was allowed to visit everywhere, except inside the main mosque, the Al Masjid an Nawabi.

Medina is known as the City of the Prophet, and considered the second holiest site in Islam after Mecca. This is where Islam’s main Prophet, Muhammad, lived and was eventually laid to rest. All able Muslims are supposed to make the journey to Medina and Mecca once in their life.

This is the third episode of a 6 part vlog style series about my journey through Saudi Arabia. For other episodes, please click here:

For a view of Saudi Arabia from above:

Saudi Arabia has long been off limits to foreign tourists and travelers. Since a few months, however, it’s possible to visit the country on a tourist visa. I made use of this opportunity and traveled solo to Saudi Arabia for 2 weeks, including Riyadh, the Edge of the World, Medina, Al Ula, Umluj, Jeddah and the Red Sea coast.

Saudi Arabia is mostly known in the ‘Western world’ for its petroleum export, the birthplace of the religion of Islam, and unfortunately also poor human rights record. But as I discover there is much more to this massive country than first meets the eye. In these series I hope to give a glimpse into what was once an almost ‘forbidden place’ for independent travelers, and is now open for visitors from around the world.

SAUDI ARABIA Solo Travel | Caught in Medina as Non Muslim المدينة المنورة????????

#saudiarabia #medina #solotravel
This is my experience travelling solo in Medina (Saudi Arabia), the second holiest city of Islam, in November 2022. I was caught by the religious police while walking in front of the Prophet Mosque as not Muslim.

Medina is generally considered to be the cradle of Islamic culture and civilization. The city is considered to be the second-holiest of three key cities in Islamic tradition, with Mecca and Jerusalem serving as the holiest and third-holiest cities respectively. Al-Masjid al-Nabawi ( 'The Prophet's Mosque') is of exceptional importance in Islam and serves as burial site of the last Islamic prophet, Muhammad, by whom the mosque was built in 622 CE. Observant Muslims usually visit his tomb, or rawdhah, at least once in their lifetime during a pilgrimage known as Ziyarat, although this is not obligatory.

Medina is my second stop within my 10 days solo travel experience in Saudi Arabia, a country which opened to international tourism in 2019 only and it is is still partly misunderstood.

I Visited MEDINA, SAUDI ARABIA, as a Non Muslim ???????? المدينة

Medina is the second Holiest city in Islam after Mecca. It's here where the Prophet Muhammad lived and died. Millions of Pilgrims flood to both Mecca and Medina every year.

Whilst touring Saudi Arabia at the beginning of 2020, I passed Medina on my way to Al Ula from Jeddah. Having been told by various sources it was okay for me to roam around the city (but avoid entering the Prophet's Mosque), I decided to take the opportunity to explore. Traditionally, non Muslims have been forbidden from entering Mecca (and this is still the case) but for Medina there is no such enforcement of this rule, and all visitors are welcomed.

MADINAH AS A NON-MUSLIM FIRST IMPRESSIONS! | Madinah Saudi Arabia Vlog!

There is a lot of confusion as to whether non-muslims can visit Madinah aka Medina in Saudi Arabia, however after researching I found that Non-Muslims can visit, so I took the bus from Jeddah to Madinah on my own as a solo British female traveller to see what Madinah was like as I had always felt very drawn to this city.

I spent my first evening in Madinah walking around Al-Haram / Al-Masjid An Nabawi and the nearby streets and shops. What I really loved about Madinah on first impressions is how well it is catered to for tourists, which totally makes sense however because no where else in Saudi is like this (except Mecca maybe), I liked this sense of ease and the fact that I was not the only tourist there!

I love@ObaydFox 's Madinah video which you can watch here:

Non-Muslim In MEDINA ????They Don’t Want To Rent Me A Room!

Day 339-340. 83km (71837kms)

The ride into Medina continued to be a lovely one through greenish hills. Coasting around a descent I was surprised to find another bike-tourer heading the opposite way! Stopping for a chat I learned he is a fellow Brit taking roughly the same route as me, in reverse, but with the addition of Kuwait to the itinerary. After exchanging notes on respective routes, and intel on Medina, Tieran continued uphill into the wind as I resumed my descent into the holy city.

Unsure about how much Medina I would get to experience I stopped tentatively at a miqat or pilgrim station. I was allowed entry and discovered hundreds of people preparing themselves for pilgrimage. Huge toilet and shower blocks allowed folk to wash and change into the prescribed pilgrimage clothing which for men is two pieces of white unstitched cotton. There isn’t a specific dress code for women but many were in very fancy white garments, with a football scarf or similar with which to identify other members of their group in the crowd.

Continuing on into the city I discovered a centre of big new hotels surrounding the huge Prophet’s mosque. I knew the cheaper accommodation to be in the north of town so started there but quickly discovered an unwillingness to rent a room to a solo non-Muslim woman. I tried in the the posh hotels but found only 3 or 5 bedroom suites available. In one I overheard a porter referring to me as ‘kafir’ - non believer - to the embarrassment of his companion.

Back amongst the cheaper hotels I managed, with help, to find a kind Pakistani hotelier who would accept me. Thanks to Jaime Lee and Katja’s Paypal support I’m able to stay two nights in a teeny tiny room, with fabulous views of central Medina from the rooftop.

Dressing conservatively I explored the area surrounding the mosque which remains off limits to me. Half a dozen times a day the call to prayer produces waves of thousands of pilgrims to and fro at one of only a couple of mosques worldwide to accommodate a million worshippers. In general when people asked if I was Muslim I received no ill-will when I replied in the negative. While signs welcomed ‘esteemed guests and worshippers’ I loitered at the entrance to the women’s section to see if I would be invited inside but understandably was not. In any case I count myself very lucky to have been able to experience at least to some degree this massive human spectacle.

Saudi Arabia Travel - One Day in Riyadh ???????? المملكة العربية السعودية مدينة الرياض السفر سياحة أجنبي

Saudi Arabia has long been off limits to foreign tourists and travelers. Since a few months, however, it’s possible to visit the country on a tourist visa. I made use of this opportunity and traveled to Saudi Arabia for 2 weeks, including Riyadh, the Edge of the World, Jeddah, Medina, Al Ula, Umluj, and the Red Sea coast.

In this video I travel to Riyadh, the capital city in the center of the country. After visiting a mosque for Friday prayer and eating lunch with the locals, I tour to modern shopping malls, museums, traditional bazaars, a construction site with migrant workers, the famous Sky Bridge Kingdom Tower, and finally the Riyadh Season Festival, designed to promote tourism and culture. While I spent almost 3 days in Riyadh, I comprised the video to make it into one single day.

Non-Muslims Can Visit Medina Now (And So Tried It Myself) - المدينة المنورة

This one is personal for me.
Long ago, I would go through Google Maps and watch pictures of places surrounding the Prophet's Mosque in Medina and imagined what it would be like to be there.
You know me, I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to history and society, so visiting one of the two holiest places in Islam was all the way up there in my bucket list.
But I coudln't. Saudi Arabia didn't hand out tourist visas and Medina was off-limits to non-muslims.
And then I read somewhere this was not the case anymore and I realized I had to give it a try. Is it really possible?
Let's find out. We will drive all the way from Al-Ula to Medina, walk the city a see how far to the city center we can get.
Spots like Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (Prophet's Mosque) and the world's olderst mosque of Al-Quba are waiting.

HOLY PLACES Islam History at Madina City Tour ???????? My Umrah Middle East Travel Video Saudi Arabia

Umrah Madinah 2021: Saudi Arabia Vlog Episode on my Madina City Tour - Mount Uhud Battle Site and historical Mosques in Medina (Masjid Madinah)

Medina is a magical city. It is peaceful and full of Islam history. Many of the historical sites tell stories of early islam and the struggles of the islamic community at the time. It is also one of the two major religious sites in Saudi Arabia. Madinah is a holy place, with historic mosques such as Masjid al Qiblatayn, the Quba Mosque and of course Masjid An Nabawi, the Prophet's Mosque.

This travel blog episode of my Middle East travel video features my Madina video on my Umrah to Medina. I visited three major historic sites for Islam: the site of the tragic battle of Uhud at Uhud Mountain, the Qiblatayn Mosque where the direction of prayer changed from Aksa in Jerusalem to Mecca, and the Quba Mosque, the very first mosque that was built and a major site for Islam history. All three of these holy places in Saudi Arabia are beautiful and amazing - a must-see when you are coming to Medina as a tourist, interested traveler or as part of your Hajj or Umrah. Several tour operators offer them in their program, but for my Madina vlog, I ventured to these sites just via taxi. if you plan to visit Saudi Arabia and you wonder what to do in Saudi Arabia, I hope these travel tips for Medina will be useful.

If you want to know more about the following questions this video is for you:
- What should I visit in Medina? What should be part of my Medina city tour?
- What happened at the battle of Uhud in Madinah Saudi Arabia?
- Why is the battle of Uhud important for Muslims and early Islam history?
- Why is the Qiblatayn mosque a historic religious landmark?
- Why is the Quba mosque a historic place in Islam?
- What can you do on your Umrah 2020?

This vlog will cover the above questions and more. I hope this travel video inspires you and other travelers to explore new travel destinations and exciting places to travel to in Africa, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. I am in Ta'if (not Madinah)!

Even though the official Saudi Arabia tourist visa web site states that tourists are allowed to visit Madinah (except for entering the holy Mosque), the bus operator refused to sell me a ticket to Madinah. As a result, I had to quickly come up with a new plan at the bus station, and I decided to buy a ticket to Ta'if instead (اَلطَّائِفُ‎).

Sometimes unforeseen circumstances can be a blessing in disguise, because I ended up having a wonderful time in Ta'if. It is a medium-size town of around 600,000 people, and is almost at an altitude of 2000 meters in the breathtaking Sarawat mountain range.

Medina Saudi Arabia Friday Prayer at Masjid Nabawi (Jummah) ???????? Saudi Arabia Vlog

My Umrah - Visiting Masjid Nabawi for Jummah, the Friday Prayer in Medina Saudi Arabia ????????Saudi Arabia Vlog

Medina Saudi Arabia is likely the most peaceful of all travel destinations I have visited. Visiting the holy mosques in Makkah and Madinah is an amazing experience and this was my first time in Medina as part of my umrah this year.

This special travel vlog episode gives some pointers for one of the two major holy sites and one of the most amazing places in the world. I was fortunate to have been in Medina on a Friday so I was able to attend the Jummah Friday prayer at the majestic Al Masjid An Nabawi. The Prophet's Mosque SAW is the second largest mosque in the world, holding over 1 million worshippers. It is currently undergoing a further expansion.

If you are wondering where to go in Saudi Arabia, look no further. This Medina vlog will hopefully give you a good idea about the holy mosque, the Nabawi Masjid, and the special atmosphere in the holy mosque - including a beautiful azan call for prayer at the end. This video may also be interesting for you if you plan your hajj travel or you want to make Madina part of your Middle East trip. Unfortunately, I don't have a Hajj update but I hope the holy mosques will be open again soon. Be safe and travel differently, once it is possible again.

My travel to Madinah Saudi Arabia was part of my Umrah this year, coming from Makkah via the Haramain train. This travel vlog is therefore a bit different than my other vlog episodes as it dives more into Islam and provides some insights into the history of the amazing mosque. You may also get more of a spiritual feeling from this travel episode, being part of my small hajj.
Clearly I was not the only religious traveler and tourist in the holy city of Medina. In fact, the haram was so full for the Jummah prayer that I could not get a place inside!

I am posting new travel videos on the most amazing places in the world every week so please do subscribe to my channel and activate the notifications bell to get the latest updates.

Can You Visit Medina as a Non-Muslim?

I was fairly nervous about my recent trip to Medina especially because it is the site of the second holiest mosque in Islam. I managed to find a hotel that was on the very edge of the Haram square with an amazing view of the mosque.

This was a weekend trip that also included visiting Jeddah and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. I used the brand new Haramain High Speed Railway that connects Medina all the way to Mecca. The train service can travel at up to speeds of 300 mph cutting our journey time to just 1 hour and 30 minutes.
