Every August, the city of Medellin, Colombia transforms as the Medellin Flower Fair fills the streets with color and sweet scents. This week, Courtney Scott meets the Familia Londoño famous for making flower silletas for the Parade of the Silleteros.

COLOMBIA, Part 3 - Medellin
Medellin (pronounced in Colombia as med.a.gene), is the second largest city in Colombia with over three and a half million people. Medellin has become a dynamic metropolitan area since the beginning of the 21st Century. The city has constructed a new Metro rail system; there is improved security and the education system has been improved.
We visit the flower farm of one of the participants in Medellin's annual flower festival (Feria de las Flores). The honor of being chosen to march in this annual parade is handed down from parents to children, from one generation to the next. In 2015 it is said that there were 500 people carrying these silletas (the flower arrangement structure which is carried on people's backs).
In this video you will see the flower farms in nearby Santa Elena, how the structures are fabricated and how the flower arrangements are attached before the parade, and carried in the parade.
Medellin has constructed a Metro system which is affordable for even the folks living in the lowest economic level of the city.
Fernando Botero was born here and you will see the central plaza with his generously endowed sculptures and the people who enjoy this central location on a daily basis.

We were on the last day of the former flower fair in Medellin Colombia, enjoying the parades of silleteros and the kindness of its people.

This fair is the most socially recognized event in the city of Medellin, Colombia, includes a parade of silleteros with their floral ornaments, parade of horses of fine passage, peageant, concerts and artistic and musical events.
On a personal level, we tell our subscribers that we make the last shots with our Sony AX 53 4K that we show in the first 2 and a half minutes of this video at the fair of flowers of Medellin Colombia in 2019.
We had a perch while we toured the streets of Medellín; Someone took the Sony fdr ax 53 4k out of our backpack that accompanied us on many trips and many countries during the last 4 years and with which we took our videos that we showed on our YouTube channel.
This mishap occurred to us in Medellin in an oversight; It could have been in any city in Latin America, but it happened in the country and one of the cities that attracts us the most and we have traveled in recent years: Medellin Colombia.
As a recommendation to the foreign tourist, we say that we cannot get distracted in street shows that are not organized by the mayor's office and where there is no police.

It's August again and with August always comes Ferie De Las Flores aka the Flower Festival.
Parades, concerts, art and a lot more awaits you at the flower festival. In other words a big party! The month of August is one of the busiest in Medellin next to Christmas time. A lot of people are coming into the city of eternal spring to see the beautiful flowers arrangements.
We had a lot of fun at the flower festival. Lots of people, events, food and of course flowers.
We noticed, that the traffic was really bad during that time. The traffic jams started unusually early and ended pretty late too. If you want to fly to Medellin during August it will cost you more than usual because of the flower festival.
We also have to mention, that you have to watch out when you are in big crowds, August is one of the high seasons for pickpocketers. Always watch your stuff and try to avoid the big crowds if possible and try to stand a little bit further of a stage. The further the better, there are fewer people and therefore the probability lower to get robbed.
The Story:
The first flower festival ever started around 50 years ago. Flower farmers from Santa Elena, a village up in the hills, are cultivating different kind of flowers there. They came down with the silletas (a wooden kinda chair that they were carrying on their backs. The chair has more history to it, but let's concentrate on the flower festivals story) into the city of Medellin in order to sell the flowers.
As soon as they sold their flowers they went grocery shopping and went back to Santa Elena with the groceries. The journey down took around 19h and the way up around 23h. It was a long and tough journey.
One of the farmers got enough money to buy a car and transported the flowers that way. When they went down to the city in the new car they first drove by the markets to show their flowers, that was marketing in the early days if you want so.
Long story short, this is how the tradition of the flower festival started, and ever since they celebrate the beautiful flowers from the Santa Elena farmers. For 2 weeks each August.

We planned to come to Medellin at this exact time of year, to experience the annual 10 day long, Feria de las Flores (The Flower Festival) and the incredibly unique, Parade of the Sillateros.
As I am writing this, we only have 2 weeks left in Colombia and we are honestly already talking about 'next time' or 'when we come back'.
Medellin stole our heart, it has absolutely everything we would want and need in somewhere we could live forever. I am feeling a little cheated at how little we knew about this country. The nature, history, cuisine and a year round climate that is dare I say, perfect.
The parade is a celebration of culture and heritage, paying homage to the flower cultivators and vendors in the neighboring area of Santa Elena.
Medellin is shaped like an oblong bowl, with mountains surrounding the entire area on all sides. The Sillateros, were originally porters, who carried things and even PEOPLE up the mountains on chairs strapped to their back. The amount of pride and adoration that is showered on the Sillateros from the thousands of people cheering for them is beautiful and humbling. We were brought to tears more than a few times from the sheer beauty of the love coming from the crowd, and the beauty of the entire event.
We took about 2 hours of footage, and did our best to scale it down - to 6 minutes, we hope you enjoy - go grab a beverage, relax for a few minutes - and enjoy.

i filmed this footage in Medellin 2001 and recently edited it. Its a festival celebrating the flowers of Colombia every year in August. Most of the footage you see is the closing event where the silleteros, dancers, musicians, parade down a main street in Medellin. The silleteros are the farmers who grow the flowers and carry the silletas on their backs, and some of them are very heavy. The festival is very beautiful and throughout the month of August, Medellin celebrates its flowers with special events, music, dance, and food. (the music you hear is Feria de las Flores by Colombian born guitarist/composer/arranger Juan Carlos Quintero)

An August trip to Medellín wouldn't be complete without rejoicing in the area's stunning floral beauty. Flower shows are spread across the city during the festival, yet the true spectacle is the Desfile de Silleteros (also known as the Flower Grower's Parade). This event sees hundreds of local florists marching through the city's streets, bearing gigantic floral arrangements on their backs. Donned in traditional attire, they compete to present the most aesthetically pleasing and intricate displays. The event immerses attendees in a vibrant explosion of color and ambiance, easily making it one of the most enjoyable parades across all Colombian festivals.
