Encircled by one of the world’s largest enclosed lagoons, the 101st French department is a real cultural crossroads between Africa, the Indian Ocean and Europe.
Mayotte’s population is very young: 55% of the population is under 20, the highest percentage of any French territory. But that doesn't mean traditions get lost here. Little villages still live in pace with age-old customs and nature reveals a surprise package of flora and fauna.
Did you know that the famous perfume maker Jean-Paul Guerlain used to own a garden here where he grew one of his main raw materials: the ylang-ylang?

Europa am anderen Ende der Welt: Leben auf Mayotte
Ein Stück #Europa vor der ostafrikanischen Küste? Das ist Mayotte! Die kleine Insel im indischen Ozean zwischen Mosambik und Madagaskar gehört ganz offiziell zu Frankreich und ist seit 2014 auch Mitglied der Europäischen Union. Wie sieht der Alltag junger Menschen auf Mayotte aus? Was macht das Leben am anderen Ende der Welt so besonders? Und welchen Bezug haben junge Menschen auf Mayotte zur EU und Europa?
Das wolltet auch ihr unbedingt wissen und habt dafür gestimmt, dass Hannah sich dort - irgendwo zwischen Europa und Afrika - einmal genau umschaut. In Mamoudzou, der Hauptstadt von Mayotte trifft Hannah die 18-jährige Moina. Moina ist auf Mayotte aufgewachsen, geht dort zur Schule und träumt davon, nach ihrem Abschluss Krankenschwester zu werden. In ihrer Freizeit spielt sie gerne Basketball. Doch wie Moinas Zukunft auf Mayotte aussehen wird, ist ungewiss.
Denn Moina, die als Baby zusammen mit ihrer Mutter nach Mayotte kam, ist auf der Insel nur so lange geduldet, wie sie zur Schule geht. Sie hat keine französischen Papiere. Sorgen macht sie sich deshalb aber nicht, das stellt Hannah schnell fest. Sie begleitet Moina für einen Tag durch ihren Alltag und erfährt dabei eine Menge über die Geschichte der Insel und die Kultur der Mahorer. Wusstest du zum Beispiel, dass das Durchschnittsalter auf Mayotte 17 ist? Und woran liegt es, dass so viele Menschen von den umliegenden Inseln nach Mayotte kommen? Über Instagram konntet ihr live dabei sein, selbst Fragen stellen und im Laufe des Tages immer wieder Entscheidungen für Hannah und Moina treffen und so den Dreh beeinflussen. Mayotte N'Gouja beach
Mayotte (Mahorese: Maoré), officially named the department of Mayotte, is both a French island region and an overseas department of France. It is the southernmost island of the Comoros archipelago located in the Mozambique Channel and in the Indian Ocean.
N'gouja beach is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Mayotte. It is also the perfect place to observe turtles that come to feed on the seagrass, fish and multicolored corals (the most beautiful I have seen in the world), dolphins and whales. The beach is made up of blond sand and lined with baobabs and lush vegetation. We also come across the adorable lemurs. For me this place is really one of the most beautiful on the planet!
Mayotte (en mahorais : Maoré), officiellement nommée département de Mayotte, est à la fois une région insulaire française et un département de France d'outre-mer. C’est l’île la plus au sud de l’archipel des Comores située dans le canal du Mozambique et dans l’océan Indien.
La plage N’gouja est considérée comme l'une des plus belles plages de Mayotte. C’est également l’endroit rêvé pour observer des tortues qui viennent se nourrir sur les herbiers, des poissons et des coraux multicolores (les plus beaux que j ai vu dans le monde) , des dauphins et des baleines . La plage est composée de sable blond et bordée de baobabs et d'une végétation luxuriante . On y croise également les adorables makis . Pour moi ce lieux est vraiment un des plus beau de la Planète !

A la découverte des cascades de Mayotte
Nous sommes partis à la recherche de cascades de Mayotte.
C'était la première fois que nous voyions la cascade d'Hapandzo, dans le village du même nom. Idem pour la cascade de Mathias (nom donné à la cascade par le guide des 47 balades et randonnées à Mayotte) située à Barakani.
Nous avons fini la journée par la célèbre cascade de Soulou qui tombe directement sur la plage.
