24 Hours on a CARGO TRAIN in the Sahara Desert

→ Join me for daily adventures on Instagram:

Riding the iron ore train in Mauritania was one of my wildest adventures to date. This is the world's longest train, and it transports iron ore from a mine in the Sahara, to the city of Nouhadibou on the coast of Mauritania. You can ride it... at your own risk ???? This film was shot at the beginning of January 2020, before the pandemic.

This is probably my favorite adventure that I've ever taken. And I did it with my good friend Thomas, from @YesTheory. We hitched a ride on a 20-hour ire ore train, that travels across the Sahara Desert of Mauritania. It's the world's longest, heaviest, and most dangerous train, and let me tell you, it was the experience of a lifetime.

I've been wanting to take this train ride ever since my first trip to Mauritania in 2019. And after Thomas invited me, I couldn't help but say yes.

Thank you for watching, and stay tuned for more videos across this incredible West African nation called Mauritania!

Mauritania’s Railway Journey Through the Sahara | WIDE | FULL DOCUMENTARY

Mauritania is a Sahelian country that, after fighting terrorism, is returning to life. One of its proudest achievements is the iron train, which transports iron ore to the Atlantic. A source of income for the entire country, 90% of which is desert and has been independent since 1960. For writer Olivier Weber, travelling on these wagons is a way of meeting desert workers and shopkeepers back in their villages. And at stopovers, to live with nomads and the lords of the dunes.

The Mauritanian Sahara offers landscapes that are unique in the world, with its ergs, its gigantic monoliths so dear to Théodore Monod, its thousand-year-old oases and the legendary town of Chinguetti, with its ancestral library and exceptional manuscripts.

Riding the Iron Ore Train through Mauritania

Riding the Iron Ore Train through Mauritania. What to expect when riding the rails through the Sahara desert as a Western woman.

Our train arrived at 9:56PM on December 31, 2019. We had spent the previous 13 hours waiting in the parched town of Choum. We boarded the train by starlight, in a rush of pure excitement and nervous energy. The ride itself is a story for another time, but one that I will never forget. We arrived in the port town of Nouadhibou a little after noon the next day to an electric mix of exhaustion and adrenaline.

Riding the Iron Ore Train through Mauritania is undoubtedly one of the last real, raw travel experiences out there for intrepid travelers.

The longest train in the world in Sahara Desert. Amazing Journey!

There’s a nervous and hectic biding among local people

A little later they will get on the longest train in the world

When the 2,5 kms long train comes, sheep herds and belongings are embarked firstly.

Then the 600 kms long trek begins.

Train’s primary objective is to carry iron ore from Zouerat city on the northwest part of Mauretania to Nouadhibou city on the southwest.

On each wagon, there is 83 tones of in ore entrained in iron mine in Zouerat.

The train goes loaded and comes back empty. The round trip journey takes 20 hours going and 15 hours returning back.

Journey is totally free of charge.

For the sheep also…

Air temperature reaches up to 45 degrees C during daytime, while it decreases down to 10 degrees C at night.

Heavy clothes and headscarfs are protecting people from both heat and cold.

But it’s not only the change of temperature which affects them. Sand storms and iron filings make it hard also.

Some passengers are going for visiting their relatives, while some are going for shopping.

The sheep will be sold in livestock market.

When this trek in the longest train in the world ends, everybody is covered with rust and dust.

Le Train du Désert - Mauritanie

Adventure, culture and nature. That's what you can experience in 'Le Train du Désert', the desert train. A unique voyage in the beautiful desert of Mauritania, on board of a comfortable train, colorfully decorated in African style.
You can eat, sleep and sip the three traditional glasses of Mauritanian tea on the train. You can hop on the locomotive and sit on the driver's seat. You can even ask for a photostop.
In one week you visit the iron ore mine of Zouerate, camp at the foot of the impressive monolith Ben Amira, and see one of the longest trains on earth passing by (more than 2 km). The desert train itself has only two carriages and is probably one of the shortest trains in the world.
From October until May the desert train has weekly departures.
