Marshall Islands 1870's

Marshall, California

Marshall is an unincorporated community in Marin County, California.[3] It is located on the northeast shore of Tomales Bay 6 miles south of Tomales, at an elevation of 25 feet.

Marshall is located on the east shore of Tomales Bay. It has a population that is unknown. It is located approximately 15 miles south east of Bodega Bay, on State Route 1. Its ZIP code is 94940.

The town is named after the Marshalls, four brothers who set up a dairying industry there in the 1850s. Starting in the 1870s, Marshall was a stop on the North Pacific Coast Railroad connecting Cazadero to the Sausalito ferry.

There is still some dairying in the area with Straus Family Creamery based there, but nowadays the town's major commerce is in oysters and clams, for which it is a center. It also acts as a center for tourists visiting Tomales Bay and the neighbouring Point Reyes Peninsula.

HERE6 - Scapegoat The 1871-1906 San Francisco City Hall

When completed in the 1890’s, city hall was San Francisco’s grandest building. City hall's collapse during the 1906 earthquake and fire storm was attributed to shoddy construction, rooted in political corruption. But an examination of the 1906 earthquake damage suggests otherwise.

A History of the Golden Harvest 1860 - 1880 - Battle Creek, Michigan

This is a history of the golden harvest period between 1860 - 1880 that was centered around Battle Creek, Michigan. Michigan was an emerging state, coming out of a period of pioneer struggle for survival. Industrious farmers tamed the land, creating a bumper crop of wheat across the state while at the same time innovative inventors created and introduced new machines to harvest more yield.

These inventors created models of the early threshers and combines here in Southwest Michigan that have become so common place today in modern farming. Tools enhance farming and the harvest were created all over the U.S. during this period, but two major manufacturers established themselves in Battle Creek during the 1860's. These inventions, combined with a bumper crop of wheat one season started a windfall of a golden harvest that lasted almost two full decades bringing prosperity to the region and state.

A Detailed History of Chicago, America's Third Largest City

Chicago history; The Great Fire; Stockyards and Bubbly Creek; The Gold Coast; Lake Shore Drive; Grant Park; The Tribune Tower

Welcome to View Master Travels! In this episode, we explore the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, through the lens of a vintage View-Master reel from 1948. Join us as we uncover the history and hidden gems of this iconic city.

Chicago, known as the third largest city in the United States, has a rich historical background. It all began with the Chicago Portage, a crossing connecting Lake Michigan and the Des Plaines River. This swampy area played a crucial role in connecting America's inland waterways to Lake Michigan, facilitating trade for fur traders.

The city's roots trace back to Fort Dearborn, a military fort constructed at the entrance of the Chicago Portage. Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, considered the founder of Chicago, established a trading post nearby. From these humble beginnings, Chicago experienced rapid growth, transforming from a trading post to a thriving city of over 1 million people in just 60 years.

One of the major milestones in Chicago's history was the Great Fire of 1871, which destroyed thousands of structures and left a lasting impact on the city. Despite the devastation, Chicago rebuilt itself quickly, and remnants of this disaster can still be observed throughout the city.

Our journey takes us to various locations captured in the 1948 View-Master reel. We begin with the Stockyards, where we discover the Union Stockyards, once the largest industrial meat-processing district in the world. These stockyards revolutionized the meat industry, separating the average consumer from the source of their meat. However, the pollution resulting from the industry's activities led to the infamous bubbly creek and contaminated the city's water supply.

Next, we explore Lakeshore Drive and the Gold Coast, a stretch of Lake Michigan's shore north of downtown Chicago. This area, known as the Gold Coast, owes its development to Potter Palmer, a prominent businessman. Palmer drained the swampland and convinced the city to build Lake Shore Drive to provide easy access to his mansion. Although his mansion and many original buildings no longer stand, we discover some remaining architectural gems.

Continuing our journey, we encounter the historic Outer Drive (Lake Shore Drive). We take in the scenic views from a pedestrian bridge in Lincoln Park, Chicago's largest park. Originally called North Side Park, it underwent significant expansion after the great fire and became home to various attractions such as the Lincoln Park Zoo, conservatory, and history museum.

We then visit Buckingham Fountain/Grant Park, a prominent landmark and one of the world's largest fountains. The fountain, surrounded by four sets of sea horses representing the states bordering Lake Michigan, was a gift from the Buckingham family. Grant Park, where the fountain is located, has a fascinating history of land reclamation and repurposing, including the transformation of Northerly Island from an airport to a park.

Moving along Michigan Avenue, we explore the oldest section of this iconic street captured in the View-Master reel. The Art Institute of Chicago, the only building in Grant Park, stands as a testament to the efforts of Aaron Montgomery Ward, who fought to preserve the park as a public space. We also encounter several other historic buildings that have withstood the test of time.

Finally, we reach the Wrigley Building and Tribune Tower, two iconic landmarks situated near the Michigan Avenue Bridge. The Wrigley Building, inspired by the Columbian Exposition's great white city, stands tall with its gleaming white terra-cotta façade. The Tribune Tower, designed through an architectural design contest, served as the home of the Chicago Tribune newspaper for many years.

Join us as we explore these historic locations and dive deeper into the history of Chicago. Discover the stories behind the buildings, the people,.
