Mardin, city, capital of Mardin il (province), southeastern Turkey. It lies on the southern slopes of a broad highland that rises to an elevation of 3,450 feet (1,052 metres) and overlooks extensive limestone plateaus. The locality receives more rainfall than the lower plains and has hot summers and cold winters.
A ruined Roman citadel, rebuilt in medieval times, crowns the summit of the highland as evidence of Mardin’s earlier existence as the Marida (Marde, Maride, Merida) of antiquity. Marida was taken by the Seljuq Turks in the late 11th century and was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire by Sultan Selim I in 1516. The Ulu Cami (Great Mosque), dating from the Seljuq period, and the Sultan İsa Medresesi, a religious school built in the 14th century, are still standing.

Mardin is an important regional trading centre on the east-west trade routes of southern Anatolia. It is connected by a branchline with the rail line between Istanbul and Baghdad and is linked by road with Gaziantep (west), Aleppo (southwest, in Syria), Nusaybin (southeast), and Diyarbakır (northeast).

Mardin province, bordered to the south by Syria, is an agricultural area chiefly producing wheat, barley, and sesame. Angora goats are raised for mohair, and there is a small cotton- and woollen-weaving industry. In addition to Turks, the province has large populations of Arabs and Kurds. Area province, 4,973 square miles (12,879 square km). Pop. (2000) city, 65,072; province, 705,098; (2013 est.) city, 86,948; province, 773,026.

Mardin:
Mardin is a city in southeastern Turkey. The capital of Mardin Province, it is known for the Artuqid (Artıklı or Artuklu in Turkish) architecture of its old city, and for its strategic location on a rocky hill near the Tigris River that rises steeply over the flat plains.
Mardin is one of the oldest settled areas in upper Mesopotamia. Excavations done in the 1920s discovered remains in the area that dated to 4000 BCE. The first known civilization were the Subarians who were then succeeded in 3000BCE by the Hurrians. The Elamites gained control around 2230 BCE. and were followed by the Babylonians, Hittites, Assyrians, Romans and Byzantines.
In 692, the Muslim Ummayads arrived and introduced Islam. The Abbasid Caliphate based in Baghdad replaced them in 824. Factions of the Seljuk Turks fought each other over Mardin as it changed hands many times before it was finally taken by Nahm ad-din Ilghazi, the bey of the Artukids, a Turkish dynasty founded by the Seljuk Emir Artuk. During the Artukid period, many of Mardin's historic buildings were constructed, including several Mosques, Palaces, Madrassas and Hans.
The lands of the Artukid dynasty fell to the Mongols sometime between 1235 and 1243, but the Mongols never directly governed the area. The Artukid family ruling Mardin became vassal state of the Mongol Empire. During the battle of Ain Jalut in 1260, the Artuqid (Artık) ruler revolted against the Mongol rule. Hulegu's general and Chupan's ancestor, Koke-Ilge of the Jalayir, stormed the city and Hulegu appointed the rebel's son, al-Nasir, governor of Mardin. Although, Hulegu suspected the latter's loyalty for a while, thereafter the Artukids remained loyal unlike nomadic Bedoun and Kurd tribes in the south western frontier. The Mongol Ilkhanids considered them important allies. For this loyalty they shown, Artukids were given more lands in 1298 and 1304. Mardin later passed to the Akkoyunlu, a federation of Turkic tribes that controlled territory all the way to the Caspian Sea. In 1517, Mardin was annexed by the Ottomans under Selim the Grim. During this time, Mardin was administered by a governor directly appointed under the Ottoman Sultan's authority. In 1923, with the founding of the Republic of Turkey, Mardin was made the administrative capital of a province named after it.Mardin has often been considered an open air museum due to its historical architecture. Most buildings use the beige colored limestone rock which has been mined for centuries in quarries around the area.

Mardin City Guide - One of the most beautiful cities in Turkey!

What we are about to explore in this Mardin Travel Guide is the summary of our visit to Mardin in June 2022, one of the most beautiful cities in Turkey.

One of the oldest cities of Northern Mesopotamia, Mardin seems locked in time, with its unique texture and amazing architecture.

Mardin, with its elegant limestone buildings overlooking the Mesopotamian plains, is arguably one of Turkey’s most beautiful cities. It’s also one of the country’s most historically rich and culturally interesting, with the region being home to a mix of Kurds, Arabs, and Assyrians.

We had seen a couple of pictures, but we really didn’t expect such beauty and authenticity. Besides, Mardin has little mass tourism. We were lucky enough to be some of the few tourists in the city. However, it won’t remain under the radar for much longer, so you better visit soon.

While you can see all of the historical sites over the course of a few days, allow yourself even more time to visit the nearby sites of the scenic Deyrulzafaran Monastery and Dara, the important East Roman fortress city.

Should You Visit Mardin, Turkey?? // EAST TURKEY TRAVEL // Turkey Travel Vlog 2021

Days 54 and 56 of our new life as full time travelers // Recorded on Oct 29th and Oct 31st 2021

Have you ever wondered how does East Turkey Travel look like? In today's video we are sharing our experience in Mardin, Turkey and showing you around another beautiful Turkish town!

We know people usually don't go this far east in Turkey. Because of it's proximity to Syria and Iraq, people assume it's unsafe to visit Mardin, but as we experienced everywhere in Turkey, Mardin was extremely safe!

We booked 6 nights there, but because we couldn't find a hotel in the town center, we stayed in the outskirts of town. It was such a different experience and we honestly loved it. I liked it more than G because he had VERY high expectations about this little Middle Eastern town... he pictured we would have it all to ourselves and it wasn't the case at all! (PS: You only need 3-4 nights in Mardin, and please stay in the town center!)

We hope we did a good job at showing you what is it like in Mardin, Turkey in this fun Turkey travel vlog! If you have any questions, please let us know! We are always here to help!

We published a blog post on the blog with 11 Things to do in Mardin, Turkey with costs, reviews and tons of useful info! Check it out here:

Southeast Turkey solo travel: Bazaar, shopping, artists, raki, and dilemmas in Mardin

Two years ago in the middle of the pandemic, I traveled across southeast Turkey, visiting places like Adana, Gaziantep, Mardin, Urfa, and other less touristy towns & cities. I stayed in Mardin for a couple of days, roaming around the deserted streets and talking to locals about their daily life and work.

In this episode, I go shopping at a typical Turkish supermarket, I wonder around the narrow stony streets, walk through the Bazaar, visit local artists and artisans, drink raki with the hotel owner and find myself in a dilemma if I should travel to Iraq for the weekend lockdown.

Southeast Turkey: First impressions of Mardin

Two years ago (in 2020) during the pandemic, curfew, and weekend lockdowns I traveled through southeast Turkey and stayed a couple of days in the beautiful historic town on the edge of Mesopotamia - Mardin.

I took the public bus from Sanliurfa to enjoy the vast landscapes and arrived with a bit of delay, but I still feel like buses are the best means of transport in this part of Turkey.

I booked a room in a boutique hotel that seemed to be open just for me and discovered the lovely town on foot. Most of the things were closed due to lockdown and there weren`t many tourists but I really enjoyed my stay. The people are incredibly friendly and welcoming!

I was there in December so the town was decorated with beautiful lights and the weather was getting quite cold. Here`s a little walk through this ancient city.

A Friendly Family in Mardin, South East Turkey

My wife and I take a stroll in the back alleys of Old Town Mardin and a man stops us and asks where we are from. When we say 'America' we haves us down and insists we sit down and enjoy some Turkish Coffee. Then he insisted we eat fruit and then he even fed us his own food...from his own spoon!

Mardin, Turkey is the most friendly and amazing city in the Country. Read our travel blog to learn more about our experience and why you should go to this wonderful city:

Mardin's Fascinating and Ancient Bazaar, Southeastern Turkey

It helped that our trip into the Mardin Bazaar began with the sight of a blacksmith shoeing a horse that was so stressed (or excited) that its 5th leg was in prominent evidence. (Talk about eye-popper!) Other than watching movies or television, Travels With Sheila has never actually seen a horse being shoed. (It's the little things in life....)

Mardin has a beyond fascinating old bazaar. A labyrinth of dark, covered, narrow and intricate passages with little hidey-holes dug into the walls. This bazaar is special not for a selection of old antiques or purchases for Westeners but because it is a small, personal and truly authentic bazaar for the locals. There were women and men dressed in the distinctive and traditional Kurdish clothing along with so much to see.

The friendliest people, speaking Turkish and Arabic ,who were thrilled to death when we came up with a few words in their languages and wanted to interact. Again...loved Mardin.

WELCOME TO MARDIN - The GEM MESOPOTAMIA | INDIAN IN TURKEY | TURKEY TRIP | EPI 49 VLOG 240

Mardin has been in my consequences for longtime. As I reached Turkey, I was recommended to visit this beautiful city. Here I am and trust me I am so happy to be here that's why I have already spend more than 20 days here.

I came from Diyarbakir to Mardin, Turkey by mini bus and which took around 1.20 mins to reach and the distance was just under 100 kms.

Then immediately I went to old town of Mardin, which is the heart and soul of Mardin. The back lanes and the stoned house took my heart away.
