The Maldives is a small country in South Asia, located in the Arabian Sea of the Indian Ocean. It lies southwest of Sri Lanka and India, about 1,000 kilometres from the Asian continent. The chain of 26 atolls stretches from Ihavandhippolhu Atoll in the north to Addu Atoll in the south. Comprising a territory spanning roughly 298 square kilometres with around 427,756 inhabitants. Malé is the capital and the most populated city.
The Maldives archipelago has an average ground-level elevation of 1.5 metres above sea level, it is the world's lowest country, with even its highest natural point being one of the lowest in the world, at 5.1 metres . Due to the consequent risks posed by rising sea levels, the government pledged in 2009 to make the Maldives a carbon-neutral country by 2019.
Islam was introduced to the Maldivian archipelago in the 12th century, developing strong commercial and cultural ties with Asia and Africa. From the mid-16th-century, the region came under the increasing influence of European colonial powers, with the Maldives becoming a British protectorate in 1887. Independence from the United Kingdom was granted in 1965 and a presidential republic was established in 1968.
The Maldives is also a member of the United Nations. Fishing has historically been the dominant economic activity, and remains the largest sector by far, followed by the rapidly growing tourism industry. Maldives is rated high on the Human Development Index.
The Maldives was a member of the Commonwealth from July 1982 until its withdrawal from the organisation in October 2016.

There's a lot that goes into planning a trip to the region, so we're here to share the TOP TEN THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO TO THE MALDIVES! After ten hotels and endless plane rides around the country, we have learned SO much about what it's like to travel to the Maldives. In this video, we will tell you the most important things to keep in mind when you book a trip to the Maldives.
Whether you have booked a hotel already or are looking for advice on what hotels, what room types and what the heck the transfers are about, we have you covered.

While on some vacations your arrival or departure times don’t really matter because all you have to do is get to your hotel via taxi or car, arrival and departure times in the Maldives can make or break your trip. It is critical to pay attention to your flight schedule for a few reasons. Since the Maldives is a country made up of many islands, your transfers include sea planes, regular planes and boats. If your transfer to the hotel is via sea plane or boat, those hours are pretty limited to daylight. Planes are a little bit of an exception, but they also operate on somewhat limited hours. If your flight is set to arrival around 9pm or 10pm as many do, you will need to spend one night on Malé before transferring to your hotel. The best arrival times are early morning to ensure you are able to catch the first transfer out to your hotel.

Finding hotels can feel quite overwhelming – where do you even start? The great thing about the Maldives is that there is truly something for everyone. Big brands like Marriott, Hyatt and Hilton offers great experiences where loyalists can earn or spend hard earned points, but there are also dozens of 5-star brands that you may never have heard of. My favorite thing to do is to search on trivago.com . Trivago aggregates all the major booking platforms and displays every hotel available on the internet and the prices related to each of the hotels across different platforms.
There are a few ways to transfer to hotels in the Maldives: boat, plane or sea plane. Depending on the distance from Malé, your hotel may offer a boat transfer. Boat transfers are often less expensive than flights and have more flexibility around hours of operation.
One of the most difficult decisions you will have to make are whether to choose a beach villa or an overwater villa. I know, tough life. But really, this is important. People always ask us what our preferred room type is or assume we will always pick the overwater villa, but that’s not necessarily true. Not all overwater villas are created equal. Some hotels will offer overwater bungalows, but they will be smaller and darker than their beach villa counterparts or simply not over desirable water. Sometimes, the beach villa is significantly nicer, larger, with access to gorgeous sandy shores and blue water with a bathroom the size of the room itself. We have stayed at properties before where we have actually moved rooms due to the overwater villa being far less appealing. For example, one overwater hut we stayed in, you could actually not swim from the balcony due to the grassy bottom and six inches of water. We decided it was much more pleasant to stay in a gorgeous beach villa that accessed pristine teal water AND had a private pool.

Day 1
10AM — Flight Manila to the Maldives via Scoot Air w/ layover in Singapore
2PM — Arrive in Singapore (Explore Changi Airport during 4-5hr layover)
6:30PM — Hop on flight to the Maldives
8PM — Arrive at Maldives airport, buy a sandwich :P
9PM — Take a bus from the airport to Hulhumale that runs 24/7. You can pay in US dollars about $1 per journey. Get off at first stop. Walk to Turquoise Residence by UI (BOOK HOTEL HERE:
10AM — Check in. Sleep.
Day 2
7AM — FREE Buffet breakfast at hotel
9AM — Walk around Hulhumale, (tbh, not much to see in town, it’s quite residential) FREE DAY
10AM — Visit public tourist beach here (Bikinis are not allowed in most beaches since the Maldives is a Muslim nation, so only wear your Bikinis if you are on “Tourist Bikini Beach”) We mostly killed time in our hotel (we only booked this place is only because it was accessible to the airport)
5PM — Found cheap roti + curry early dinner
6PM — Walk back to hotel
9PM — Call it a night
Day 3
7AM — FREE Buffet Breakfast at Hotel
8AM — Take Early Bus from hotel to Airport — $1 (or P60-80) / pax
9AM — Visit the Villa Hotels counter outside the main terminal where the staff will help you join the boat to Paradise Island Resort (*UPDATE: Paradise Island Resort has changed their name to Villa Nautica*) (BOOK Luxury Resort HERE—
11AM — Hop onto the speedboat to Villa Nautica (20 min ride)
12NN — Check in early, and pre-arrange transfer back to the airport for tomorrow
1PM — Explore resort, take photoshoots (water villa room tour, bathtub, walkway photoshoot)
7PM — Eat at resort resto for dinner
8PM — Watch stingray feeding at resort beach
9PM — Sleep
Day 4
6AM — Wake up early & explore resort / photoshoot (Bike along the villas, photoshoot at the bathtub, photos on resort beach, photos along walkways)
10AM — FREE breakfast at resort
12NN — Checkout
12:30PM — Speedboat back to the Airport (20 min)
1PM — Take taxi to Villingili Ferry Terminal
3PM — Take ferry from Male to Maafushi Island (1.45hrs boat ride)
5PM — Arrive at Maafushi & walk to Nala Island Village Hotel (BOOK HERE:
6PM — Walk to iCom tours & prebook Shark + Dolphin tour for tom
6:30PM — Watch sunset at beach
7PM — Have dinner at Hot Bite restaurant
9PM — Sleep
