During my trip to Malaysia, this was definitely one of the best meals, if not one of the best meals of my life!

Itik Salai Masthar - When I visited Kuala Lumpur, I reached out on social media asking where to eat the best Malaysian food. A few of your recommended a restaurant known as Itik Salai Masthar, famous for their Malaysian style smoked duck curry.

The display of ducks hanging over the grill was enough to force me to go straight to the restaurant without even thinking about it. We got there early in order to film some of the ducks before they opened - and I’m glad we arrived early because they were all so nice and showed us the entire process of how they make the duck curry. The ducks and meats are smoked, then chopped up into bite sized pieces, then cooked in a spicy coconut milk curry called Masak Lemak Cili Padi. One of the key herbal ingredients is turmeric leaf.

If you’re looking for some of the best Malaysian food in Kuala Lumpur (it’s actually just outside of KL), go straight to Itik Salai Masthar, it will blow your taste buds!

Total price - 50 RM ($12.15) for everything

The best Itik Salai in Malaysia is in Kajang!

This itik salai is cooked in a huge grill, and the flames are made with the husks of coconuts. The fire lasts longer from the coconut husks, and the meat is slowly cooked for as long as 90 minutes. Therefore, the aroma of the coconut husks are penetrated into the meat which makes it much tastier than any other meat you can think of!

They sell a variety of salai, but their most famous one is their Itik Salai Masak lemak (RM7). You might want to get a drink to go with your meal because the gravy is very spicy! Suitable for people who like to excite their taste buds.

Also, enjoy your meal to the beat of the music, because both places will have live bands performing, so there’s never a dull moment. Feel free to sing along to the songs, or make a request for them to play your favourite song!

We are BACK in MALAYSIA, and this time we are in KUALA LUMPUR to eat the STREET FOOD of your dreams. In this episode, we visited the highly rated Itik Salai Masthar, a restaurant famous for its smoked meat curry, made with: DUCK (itik), BEEF (daging), GOAT (kambing) and FISH (ikan). The meats are smoked using coconut husks for MAXIMUM smokiness - SEDAP! For the MASSIVE feast of 2 bowls of duck curry, 1 bowl of beef curry, 1 fish and a plate of vegetables, we paid 27 MYR (6.60 USD). What an INCREDIBLE price! Lemon tea (1.8 MYR - 0.44 USD)

Next we head to a restaurant that has been suggested to us many times: NASI LEMAK WANJO! This place is well-known by the locals to have some tasty and authentic nasi lemak, served any time of day. We ordered a plate with beef rendang and one with chicken rendang. Both were delicious and the atmosphere was awesome, as the restaurant is tucked away in Kampung Baru. For both meals and drinks, we paid 19.4 MYR (4.74 USD).

We wanted to finish our day with a classic Malaysian street food dessert, and went hunting for a street food stall that sells apam balik. Since it was closed, we improvised and headed to the CHOW KIT market where we knew there would be DURIAN. We chose one of our favourite kinds of durian known as UDANG MERAH in Malay, and Red Prawn in English. We paid 32 MYR (7.82 USD) for a 1.3KG durian. So creamy and so delicious!

Hi guys, if you’ve been following our food adventure in Malaysia you’ll know that we like to visit local spots who serve incredible food and that we’re willing to travel for the pleasure. The eatery we visited in this video, Itik Salai Masthar ticked all the boxes for us- hope you enjoy watching this one. Make sure you’ve subscribed to our channel: so you don’t miss out on more food videos! Thanks for watching, commenting, liking and sharing our content guys. Cheers,Thomas & Sheena

Masak lemak cili api is a dish that originates from the state of Negeri Sembilan. It’s a dish made up of a coconut milk and turmeric gravy cooked with various proteins. Perhaps the most well know proteins are those which are smoked like beef, chicken, catfish and duck.

We visit Itik Salai Masthar in Bandar Baru Bangi in Selangor to sample this amazing fish.

Itik Salai Masthar is a real locals’ spot. An open air kitchen features chefs slapping whole ducks and big cuts of beef onto the smoky grill and gigantic woks filled with bubbling gravy. We have heard the gravy is particularly creamy here- the owner of the eatery used to be in the coconut business so knows exactly where to source fresh and creamy coconuts.

We eat:

- daging salai masak lemak cili api (smoked beef);
- ikan keli salai masak lemak cili api (smoked catfish);
- itik salad masak lemak cili api (smoked duck);
- accompanied with ulam (fresh, raw vegetables), sambal and rice.

Verdict? Spicy, creamy gravy and incredibly tender, smoky and flavoursome meats. A must visit!!

ITIK SALAI MASTHAR KAJANG | Ultimate Street Food in Kajang ????

Smoked duck curry is probably one of the rarest street food in the Klang Valley. When we first heard of the famous Itik Salai Masthar in Kajang, we were drooling in front of our screens. The ducks are smoked in this opened air oven with coconut shells and you can even see the fats dripping off the ducks. Our feast was filled with authentic traditional kampung flavours and spice. This is definitely a must-visit spot in Kajang.

ULTIMATE MALAYSIAN STREET FOOD in Kuala Lumpur, backlane (Wai Sek Kai-为食街) Hidden Gem - Part 1

This pandemic LOCKDOWN have caused many business to be affected. In fact, many have forgotten and lost of ideas on where to eat. Here's a location on where you can get some really amazing local Malaysian street food with a very reasonable price.

Hidden Gem: Jalan Sayur Food Street (Wai Sek Kai-为食街)
This backlane street is called, Jalan Sayur. Its best to use Grab or any other e-hailing services to get there as parking can be a little difficult to find. Its only about 15 mins away from KLCC! Jalan Sayur Food Street is one of the most popular Chinese food markets for the locals. The street food stalls start operating at around 4pm. Most of the food stalls here are owned and operated by the senior citizens for many years. The foods are really delicious and you can taste here authentic local Chinese dishes. What makes the food stalls more popular is the taste and flavor of local condiments that they use here. The foods are available at cheap and affordable rates. The seafood porridge for example, costs only RM6 per normal serving.

Here's is part 1, and please check out part 2 of my discovery and gastronomical tour on Malaysia's street food!

Chinatown (Petaling Street) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is a hotspot for all your Chinese food needs in Malaysia! We take you around to the best Chinese street food spots in KL!

First we started by visiting a 70 year old stall famous for selling raw fish congee. I had never tried this dish before and was unsure exactly how to eat it. However once biting into the soft fish I fell in love! This was the best dish of the day for sure! The fragrant sesame oil and ginger flavour combined with the smooth congee and subtle seafood flavour makes my mouth water writing this right now!

Address:
Hon Kee Porridge Petaling Street
93, Jalan Hang Lekir, City Centre, Kuala Lumpur

Our second stop was for some famous clam (La La) noodles! This restaurant was packed full of locals and featured many different stalls selling typical Malay Chinese food! We went straight for the famous noodle stall. The broth was incredibly rich and spicy, again with lots of ginger. Unfortunately the clams did not taste fresh at all and were full of gritty sand.

Address:
Lai Foong Lala Noodle
1953, Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, City Centre, Kuala Lumpur

Chinatown has all kinds of history and once of the best things to do is to visit a temple! We stopped for a quick peek inside this ancient Chinese temple in the heart of Chinatown!

Address:
Sin Sze Si Ya Temple
113A, Jalan Tun H S Lee, City Centre, Kuala Lumpur

After cooling off in the temple we visited a famous shop selling soy products. We tried the tofu pudding which was served piping hot! It was sweet and delicious.

Address:
Kim Soya Bean
49, Jalan Petaling, City Centre, Kuala Lumpur

Right across the street from the soy bean shop is an old stall selling dried longan fruit juice. It tasted like plum juice.

Address:
Air Mata Kucing 羅漢果龍眼冰糖燉冬瓜
Jalan Petaling, Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Kuala Lumpur

To finish the day we went outside chinatown to visit an no named claypot chicken shop! The preparation here was awesome! All on charcoal with 14+ claypots going all at once. The owner was very friendly but the service was slow. We waited about 45 minutes while enjoying a popular lime juice. Once the claypot arrived we were again slightly disappointed do to a bitter flavour. The chicken was big and juicy but the ratio of rice to chicken was off and the rice tasted somewhat burnt.

Address:
Claypot Chicken At Kedai Kopi Pudu Satu Enam Lapan - 168 茶餐室
21, Jalan Kancil, Pudu, Kuala Lumpur
