Apart from being the spiritual capital of Tamil Nadu, Madurai, for many Tamilians is also the state's food capital. We spent one and half days at Madurai and explored many authentic Madurai dishes.
We have visited Burma Idiyappa Kadai, Amsavalli Biriyani, Kumar mess, Madurai famous Jigarthanda, Gopu Ayyenkar Tiffin Center, Visalam Coffee, Madurai Bun Porotta etc. There are lot more food joints and restaurants to visit. Because of time limit we couldn't cover Amma mess, Murugan Idly Kadai, Simmikkal Konar mess etc.
One or two days are not enough to explore Madurai food. Hope this video will help the food enthusiastic to plan a trip to Madurai. We are sure that you will enjoy our vlog...

We started our Madurai Food Tour with Paruthi paal (Cotton Milk). It was much similar to kurukku in Kerala. Having the flavour of jaggery and dry ginger, cotton milk was good to start our Madurai Night Food.

After Paruthi Paal we went to Simmakkal Konar Kadai for trying Kari Dosai. Kari dosai is a modified version of mutta dosa where egg, dosa, chicken curry/ mutton curry, and chicken chunks / mutton chunks are used.
Konar Kadai has several years of experience in serving yummy food to their guests. In their restaurant, we tried the following delicacies:
a. Mutton kari dosai: Rs. 215.00
b. Muttai dosai: Rs. 50.00
c. Bullseye dosai: Rs. 55.00
d. Idiyappam: Rs. 15.00 per piece
e. Mutton paya: Rs. 110.00
f. Mutton chops: Rs. 156.00

Our next stop was Hanifai Jigirthanda Vilakuthoo. Jigirthanda is famous in Madurai and we selected Hanifai Jigirthanda Vilakuthoo as some of our friends suggested it over the Famous Jigirthanda. There we enjoyed regular Jigirthanda which was Rs. 50.00.

Just near Anna bus stand in Madurai, found Madurai Bun Parotta Kadai. A small shop in the side of a busy road near Madurai Millennium mall. It is served with Mutton chukka, the best I would say. You can see in wrapped in banana leaf for parcel. I will surely recommend this for any one visiting the beautiful city of Madurai.

Madurai IDLI Kadai in California USA Tasty Authentic South Indian Items
Madurai Idli Kadai, in Sunnyvale California USA, is situated close to the El Camino Real. Situated in a small commercial outlet, This South Indian eatery is 4 star rated and is very popular among locals here. It is difficult to get a seating place in the morning hours till 10.00 and again late evenings. Remains open from 7.00 am till 9.pm. I came with my daughter & wife on a Friday to avoid peak hour.
Serves all breakfast - Idli, Mini Idlis, Vada Sambar, Pongal, Uppuma, 5 Combos, 6 Uthappams, 20 Dosa items, Rava Dosa's, Tea, Coffee, Daily special items like Bisibela Bath and other rice items. Average cost $7 per item. You can order items for to Go ( Take Away ). Ordered Vada, Pongal, Onion Chilli Rava, Onion Uthappam, Masla Dosa and coffee. Very Tasty & Authentic south indian food. There are only 7 tables, each seats 4, total capacity 28!!. No wonder it is difficult to find sitting!!.
