Madeira, Portugal [4K] Igreja de São Martinho, Funchal. 2021

Video recorded on February 26, 2021. Weather: 17° C / 62.6 °F

The Church of St Martin is the main church in the Freguesia of São Martinho (Funchal), Madeira. Dedicated to St. Martin of Tours.

The old church at the bottom of the hill had become too small for the area and so construction started on July 8, 1883 on the current church of the same name, with the first stone being laid. Lack of founds halted construction until August 2, 1907, when the local parishioner José de Abreu died leaving almost all of his fortune, which for the time was large, to the continuation of the works of the same church.

The main festival that is celebrated is St Martin's day (Festa de São Martinho or Arraial de São Martinho in Portuguese) celebrated on the 10 and 11 November in the grounds of the church, where fires are made by locals and local food is made such as roasted chestnuts (Marking the beginning of the new chestnut harvest season), Espetada, Bolo do caco, and Bacalhau. The grapes that were harvested a few months before and made into wine, are first tasted on this day.

Although the construction of this beautiful church started in the 18th century, it took over 150 years to complete the work, and its size had to be adjusted to accommodate Funchal's growing population.

Inaugurated in 1918, its main attraction is a triptych with images of the Annunciation, Nativity and Santa Ana and São Joaquim.

During the island's early settlement, the area that includes the present parish was part of the much large Sé, and later São Pedro, when it was finally deannexed in 1597. The lands immediately around the commercial centre of Funchal were quickly acquired and put into service for cultivation of subsistence crops. As with the other settlements in the Portuguese Empire, these settlements eventually formed from communities of living in the shadow of small chapels that dotted the landscape. The same was true for São Martinho: a small artesanal business and chapel constituted the first buildings in this region, owned by Afonso Anes, who was responsible for guiding the influencing development, becoming a parish on 3 March 1579. Much later a new church was a formal church constructed, by the 19th century.

The establishment of an Administrative Code in 1878, defined the creation of a level of government below the municipality, giving rise to the civil parish system that coincided with the older ecclesiastical parishes. On 23 June 1916, by decree law 621, the parish of São Martinho was created.

The parish covers the southwestern part of Funchal, located three to four kilometres west of Funchal and approximately three kilometres east of Câmara de Lobos. It consists of the localities Ajuda, Amparo, Areeiro, Casa Branca, Igreja, Lombada, Nazaré, Pico de São Martinho, Pico do Funcho, Pilar, Piornais, Poço Barral, Quebradas, Vargem, Virtudes and Vitória.

Funchal is the largest city, the municipal seat and the capital of Portugal's Autonomous Region of Madeira, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. The city has a population of 111,892, making it the sixth largest city in Portugal, and has been the capital of Madeira for more than five centuries. Because of its high cultural and historical value, Funchal is one of Portugal's main tourist attractions. It is also popular as a destination for New Year's Eve, and it is the leading Portuguese port on cruise liner dockings.

The first settlers named their settlement Funchal after the abundant wild fennel that grew there. The name is formed from the Portuguese word for fennell, funcho, and the suffix -al, to denote a plantation of fennel:
...Funchal, to whom the captain gave this name, because it was founded in a beautiful forested valley, full of fennel up to the sea... — Gaspar Frutuoso, 1873,

Madeira 2021

Some highlights from our trip to Madeira (portugal) in 2021

Flower festival (festa da flor) Madeira island 2021

The flower festival in Funchal, Madeira island, celebrates the exuberance and great diversity of flowers on this island.
The festival begins with thousands of children building the wall of hope and continues with flower exhibitions, concerts, flower carpets built by various artists and a beautiful flower parade which fills the air with the ephemeral perfumes of the flowers that populate this island.
This year, the Festa da flor, took place in October due to covid19 restrictions, but it is usually celebrated in spring.

► About this channel
In summer 2021 I decided to change my life and take the time to discover the world by following unconventional ways of traveling, understanding the traditions and the culture of those place and have raw and authentic experiences. That means interacting with the locals, traveling slowly, taking the more rural and untraveled roads that are often overlooked.

Madeira, Portugal [4K] Ponta do Sol. Hottest municipality of the island. 2021

Video recorded on February 12, 2021. Weather: 22° C / 71.6 °F

This is considered the hottest municipality of the island; it is also here where the sun shines for more hours.

Economic activity is based on the primary sector, which includes agriculture, predominantly the production of sugar cane, banana, horticulture and floriculture. Another highlight is the traditional trade and hotels. In the municipality there is a company exporting plants.

This municipality has the Paul da Serra, which is distinguished for being the only plateau on the island of Madeira, and this at an altitude of 1,500 m. This site has unique natural features, due to its size and location, as nuclei of indigenous vegetation, wildlife species and migratory birds. In Paul da Serra there are wind turbines that produce electricity in a non-polluting manner.

In this town you can also visit the Ponta do Sol Pier, Lagoa do Lugar de Baixo and the Subtropical Floriculture Centre.

This municipality is divided into the parishes of Ponta do Sol, Canhas and Madalena do Mar.

Ponta do Sol owes its name to the presence of an edge of rock that goes into the sea, and which reflects the sun's rays.

At historical-cultural level here is the church of Nossa Senhora da Luz, known for its woodcarvings and images, and Lugar de Baixo Palace, which features a romantic style.

Another highlight is the traditional trade and hotels. In the municipality there is a company exporting plants.

Koupání v moři, túry, krásná příroda, levady, všude přítomné vodopády a nádherné květiny, to všechno Vás okouzlí.

Pokud by Vás ještě cokoli zajímalo, určitě mi napište. Ať už do komentářů nebo třeba na Instagram :)

Madeira, Portugal [4K] Madeira Fireworks New Year's 2021. View from the Casino da Madeira. Funchal

Video recorded on January 1, 2021. Weather: 13° C / 55.4 °F

Fireworks are used in popular festivities or celebrations and in Madeira are no exception, loudly announcing Sylvester's Night and the arrival of every New Year.

The New Year's celebrations are focused in the city of Funchal, creating the illusion of being surrounded by noisy and colourful rockets that light up the night, turning it into a show packed with light and colour.

Madeira held the Guinness World Record for the “Largest Fireworks Display in the World” between 2006 and 2010.

Come and see in the New Year in a magical, intense and colourful place, making the most of all available conditions for a memorable night and a unique occasion in the entertainments calendar.

Madeira was elected World's Leading Island Destination in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 by the World Travel Awards.

In 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 won the Europe’s Leading Island Destination prize, having competed in this category alongside major tourist destinations such as the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Sardinia, Malta, Cyprus, among others.

The World Travel Awards, also known as the “Oscars of Tourism”, were created in 1993 and are held once a year. They aim to “recognise, reward and celebrate excellence in all sectors of the tourism industry” globally, as well as, to recognise this sector best practices.

In addition to electing the best European hotels, every year, the World Travel Awards (WTA) organisation also names the best hotels in each country, awarding Madeira hotels in a wide range of categories and thus recognising the quality of the hotel facilities and excellent service available in the region.

It is known as the island of eternal spring, or the paradise garden of the Atlantic, famous for its beautiful mountains, high cliffs, lava pools, magnificent dramatic landscape, greenery, exotic flowers, waterfalls and dark, mostly pebble beaches. People that are welcoming and hospitable, reflecting the laid-back nature of the Portuguese.
