MOZAMBIQUE // Exploring Zavora, with Marine Action Research and plenty of ocean time

At the end of our trip in Africa, we spent 3 weeks among the coconut trees and various marine life at Zavora, Mozambique.
We were lucky enough to spend this time at Marine Action Research with some amazing people, and animals.
This was a trip of a lifetime and some of the best dives I have ever done, especially with Manta Rays.

Huge thankyou to Nakia and Mornay from Marine Action Research for this time.

Great White Shark circles divers in Mozambique! - NO CAGE !

While diving of the coast of Tofo, Mozambique, we were approached by a great white shark that circled us confidently. It checked us out up close for a few times before moving on. The young shark was relaxed and curious but careful.
It apears to be the first ever footage of a great white shark in Mozambique! Since this type of shark is endangered and isn't usually found this far north it was the surprise of a lifetime!

Exploring the quiet marketplace of Závora Village, Mozambique in Africa

Olá & Aloha! It’s time for me to head to the village market here in Závora. I am in need of some food and am also curious to see what sort of food I can buy here.

It’s illegal in Mozambique to film any national without their permission so I’m taking you on an ‘off hours’ quick peek of the marketplace, to show you what it looks like.

In Mozambique quite a few tribal languages are spoken, but the official country language is Portuguese - due to Portugal's prior colonial rule over Mozambique. Hence, I am keen to learn some basic Portuguese phrases to get around in this little remote village.

Join me as I explore around Závora and other bits of Mozambique - in search of adventure and the Indian Ocean humpback dolphins. Science!

Thank you all for checking in and watching (& for Subscribing) and for being all around AWESOME!

I am really loving all the comments and questions, please keep them coming!????

The Giant Mantas - Zavora, Mozambique

As soon as we jumped from the boat, we discovered a few manta rays flying over the reef followed by dozens of little fish. At barely 15 meters deep, this reef is actually a cleaning station where the mantas are getting rid of their parasites. For almost an hour, the group kept gliding past me at a very slow pace while looking right into my eyes or skimming my hair. I felt moments of complicity where I was more a guest than a spectator. Being the only diver, the divemaster stepped back to let me enjoy one of my most memorable dive with the sound of the singing whales setting the background soundtrack.

Beautiful diving in Mozambique - be a marine volunteer

Want to know what to expect on our Marine Conservation Programme? Close encounters with whale sharks and manta rays, stunning coral reefs and colourful fishes; unspoilt white sandy beaches and crystal clear water.

Our marine conservation volunteers get to experience all of that, and know that they are contributing to ocean conservation, endangered species protection, coral reef preservation work and community education projects.

If you want to be part of cleaning up and preserving our oceans for the future, this project is just the thing! The project is also perfect for beginner divers, citizen scientists and marine biology students looking for practical research experience.

Take a look at this awesome video to find out more!

Join us in Mozambique:

Marine conservation volunteering and diving in Mozambique

Southern Mozambique is one of the top 10 scuba diving locations in the world, home to large populations of whale sharks, manta rays and humpback whales. Our marine conservation volunteer project is focused on the long term conservation of these vulnerable ocean giants.

Volunteers gather research data on a diverse range of small and large marine creatures, to gain a full understand of their ocean ecosystem.

The goal of the project is for marine conservation volunteers to consistently gather data on ocean megafauna, to keep the national whale shark and manta ray databases current. You will collect population data, tag and measure animals, monitor environmental conditions, take id photos and record behaviour. Marine volunteers will also monitor coral reefs and work in the mangrove forests, plus log dives and analyse camera traps.

This is an exciting way to contribute to marine conservation, learn to dive, or improve your diving, and live in one of Africa's most beautiful and remote coastal locations.
