Moroccan Architecture : Riads

By its strictest definition, a Riad is an enclosed garden or courtyard (also spelled ‘Riyâd’ in some quarters). However, by popular usage, the term has come to represent traditional Moroccan homes, built around such an enclosure and more specifically those homes that have been renovated, restored, and opened to the public as intimate guesthouses.

Moroccan Architecture - Islamic Art & Design | HD Photos

Due to its unique location, Morocco has been influenced by many cultures throughout the years. For centuries, the country was formed by the mixture of African tribes from the other side of the Sahara Desert, Islamic traditions from Arab neighbors, and European colonizers. All of these influences have created a culture unlike any other and nowhere is this more clear than in the country’s unique architectural style.

Indeed, the specific decoration guidelines of Islam have been used to direct the construction and ornamentation of buildings in Morocco for centuries

Follow us on our Grand Moroccan Roadtrip!

Driving more than 10,000 km in eight weeks, our roadtrip included many unforgettable adventures. Real Talk:
Despite our attempt at keeping our Morocco Travel Documentary as authentic as possible, you are still watching a highlight reel. When editing, we naturally tend to choose the most exciting videos. What you don’t see are the hours spent driving through less spectacular landscapes or some of the unpleasant challenges we faced.

Did we like everything about Morocco?
Far from it. As mentioned in the video, the huge amount of trash definitely dampened our experience. Additionally, we were surprised by the sheer number of begging children. During our trip, we counted a minimum of 500 children asking us for money or sweets. While Morocco undoubtedly has to combat poverty, this behavior often seemed less dictated by need and more by opportunity. Stopping and giving is an individual choice, of course, but when we didn’t we were regularly flipped off, kicked after, or hurled insults at.
In general, though, we perceived most Moroccans as extremely friendly and helpful. The best example is the three local men who selflessly helped us to change our ruptured tire. We cannot thank them enough.

Full Disclosure:
This trip was entirely self-funded. However, we did enjoy a two-night complimentary stay at La Sultana Oualidia and a two-night complimentary stay at La Sultana Marrakech.

Explore Moroccan Architecture ????????????????

Hello and welcome to this video about exploring Moroccan architecture. Morocco is a North African country with a rich history and culture, and its architecture is a reflection of this diversity.

One of the most notable aspects of Moroccan architecture is its Islamic influence. Many buildings feature intricate geometric patterns, intricate tile work, and ornate carvings. This style of architecture can be seen in mosques, palaces, and other important buildings throughout the country.

One example of Islamic-inspired Moroccan architecture is the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca. This stunning structure is one of the largest mosques in the world and features traditional design elements such as an ornate minaret, intricate tile work, and beautiful archways.

Another popular style of Moroccan architecture is the Berber style, which is native to the indigenous people of Morocco. Berber architecture is characterized by its use of earth tones and natural materials such as adobe and clay. This style is particularly prevalent in rural areas and can be seen in traditional Berber homes and kasbahs, or fortresses.

Moroccan architecture also features influences from other cultures, particularly Spanish and French styles. In cities such as Marrakech and Fez, you can see the impact of Spanish and French colonialism in the architecture. Many buildings in these cities feature ornate balconies and wrought-iron detailing, similar to the architecture found in Spain and France.

In conclusion, Moroccan architecture is a diverse and fascinating mix of styles influenced by the country's history and culture. From Islamic-inspired mosques to traditional Berber homes, Morocco's architecture is a testament to its rich heritage. If you have the opportunity to visit this beautiful country, be sure to take the time to explore its stunning architecture.

The beauty of Moroccan architecture!!! by Marrakech Tour Designer

It’s hard not to go overboard in the medina of Marrakech, a maze of commerce, motorbikes (plus the occasional donkey), and more than 3,000 souks packed to the tadelakt-plaster rafters with pottery, baskets, lanterns, poufs—and vendors. But how to choose? In a city known for its visual overstimulation, looks are, naturally, everything. The most stunning riads in the old town are rich in both history and design diversity, and come in styles that can range from the classically Moroccan (glazed ceramic tiles, painted wooden ceilings, brightly colored everything) to the muted and ultra-modern.

???????? Morocco : Bazzars , Culture & Architecture

????????Morocco, officially the Kingdom of Morocco, is the northwesternmost country in the Maghreb region of North Africa. It overlooks the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and has land borders with Algeria to the east, and the disputed territory of Western Sahara to the south.

????Morocco also claims the Spanish exclaves of Ceuta, Melilla and Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera, and several small Spanish-controlled islands off its coast. It spans an area of 446,300 km2 (172,300 sq mi) or 710,850 km2 (274,460 sq mi),[b] with a population of roughly 37 million.

????Its official and predominant religion is Islam, and the official languages are Arabic and Berber; the Moroccan dialect of Arabic and French are also widely spoken. Moroccan identity and culture is a vibrant mix of Berber, Arab, and European cultures. Its capital is Rabat, while its largest city is Casablanca.

????Morocco faced external threats to its sovereignty, with Portugal seizing some territory and the Ottoman Empire encroaching from the east. The Marinid and Saadi dynasties otherwise resisted foreign domination, and Morocco was the only North African nation to escape Ottoman dominion. The Alaouite dynasty, which rules the country to this day, seized power in 1631, and over the next two centuries expanded diplomatic and commercial relations with the Western world.

????Morocco's strategic location near the mouth of the Mediterranean drew renewed European interest; in 1912, France and Spain divided the country into respective protectorates, reserving an international zone in Tangier. Following intermittent riots and revolts against colonial rule, in 1956 Morocco regained its independence and reunified.

????Since independence, Morocco has remained relatively stable. It has the fifth-largest economy in Africa and wields significant influence in both Africa and the Arab world; it is considered a middle power in global affairs and holds membership in the Arab League, the Union for the Mediterranean, and the African Union. Morocco is a unitary semi-constitutional monarchy with an elected parliament.

????The executive branch is led by the King of Morocco and the prime minister, while legislative power is vested in the two chambers of parliament: the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors. Judicial power rests with the Constitutional Court, which may review the validity of laws, elections, and referenda. The king holds vast executive and legislative powers, especially over the military, foreign policy and religious affairs; he can issue decrees called dahirs, which have the force of law, and can also dissolve the parliament after consulting the prime minister and the president of the constitutional court.

????Morocco claims ownership of the non-self-governing territory of Western Sahara, which it has designated its Southern Provinces. In 1975, after Spain agreed to decolonise the territory and cede its control to Morocco and Mauritania,

????A guerrilla war broke out between those powers and some of the local inhabitants. In 1979, Mauritania relinquished its claim to the area, but the war continued to rage. In 1991, a ceasefire agreement was reached, but the issue of sovereignty remained unresolved.

????Today, Morocco occupies two-thirds of the territory, and efforts to resolve the dispute have thus far failed to break the political deadlock.

????Morocco's full Arabic name al-Mamlakah al-Maghribiyyah (المملكة المغربية) may best be translated as 'Kingdom of the West', although 'the West' in Arabic is الغرب al-Gharb. Medieval

????Arab historians and geographers sometimes referred to Morocco as al-Maghrib al-Aqṣá (المغرب الأقصى, meaning 'the Farthest West') to distinguish it from neighbouring regions then called al-Maghrib al-Awsaṭ (المغرب الأوسط, meaning 'the Middle West') and al-Maghrib al-Adná (المغرب الأدنى, meaning 'the Nearest West').

????The word Morocco is derived from the name of the city of Marrakesh, which was its capital under the Almoravid dynasty and the Almohad Caliphate.
