MARRAKECH GUIDE - Morocco 2019

This Marrakech Guide (Morocco 2019), part 2 of my series, is a comprehensive Marrakech travel guide. I will provide you with essential Marrakech tips to help you avoid common mistakes and I will share my experiences around weather, currency, prices for a flight to Marrakech, transportation, the must see tourist attractions, food as well as the required travel budget.

Marrakesh is a city full of hidden oases, beautiful architecture and great rooftop restaurants. However, it is easy to get lost in the colourful maze of souks and small alleys and face locals who demand money in exchange for (sometimes wrong) directions... and do not rely on Google Maps as I explain in this video.

Most of the shown Marrakech attractions are in the old city located around the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa square - Dar El Bacha, Le Jardin Secret and Bahia Palace.

Our Story:

My name is Jan and I travel with my girlfriend Carla. I believe traveling and exploring new places is the key to a happy life. I also believe most of us are suffering from travel deficiency as we want to travel more than we actually do due to a lack of information and our busy everyday lives. It is time to stop dreaming and take back control!
I created this channel to build an open travel community which enables people to spend less time researching and more time traveling by having access to the right information more quickly.
In 2019, I challenged myself to prove that it is possible to travel frequently (12 destinations in 12 months) despite having a busy life - no more excuses!

Join me on my journey and let’s cure travel deficiency together - one trip at a time.

Marrakech Travel guide | Best places to visit in Marrakesh Morocco

Marrakesh is a must visit destination so I decided to make a travel guide.
Looking for the top things to do in Marrakech Morocco? Here are the top places to visit in Marrakesh for your next holidays 2022!

Take a tour of Marrakech and enjoy our list of recommended attractions to see:
-Number 7: Jardin Majorelle, originally created by French artist Jacques Majorelle, the property was later on purchased by the fashion designers, Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé. Entry fee is 5 USD. It gets quiet busy and loses its charm with the crowd.
-Number 6: Jemaa El-Fna Square, real epicentre of Marrakech, the square will subdue its visitors by its charm. Visit it during the day and at night and notice the difference. This 11th century historic area is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
-Number 5: Maison de la Photographie, located in a nicely renovated Riad, it's a photo museum that takes you back in time. The Riad has a roof terrace where you can have food and drink and admire the stunning view of the Medina and the Atlas mountains.
-Number 4: Get lost in the medina and the souks, wander through the narrow alleys of the city's ancient walled medina, buy Moroccan handcrafted items, bargain, push the doors of hidden riads.
-Number 3: Bahia Palace, one of the masterpieces of Moroccan architecture. One of the best spots for your Instagram shots. Entry fee is 7 USD.
-Number 2: Le Jardin Secret, an oasis of tranquility in the chaotic Medina. Discover its gardens and buildings which are outstanding examples of Islamic art and architecture.
-Number 1: El Badi Palace was once the biggest and most splendid palace complex in Morroco. Today only its foundations remain but it is still magnificent, so much that Christian Dior held its fashion show in the palace to showcase his beginning of 2019 Cruise collection. The Palace also hosts the annual festival Marrakesh du rire with Jamel Debouze.

Stay tune for our next video on the best places to eat in Marrakesh. And subscribe.

Morocco Travel Guide: Marrakech, Atlas Mountains and Essaouira

On this trip you’ll be heading to Marrakech, the heart of Morocco, where spices linger in the market air, the sun sets on street performers, and the senses are treated to a whirlwind of sights and sounds. Discover life in the sprawling medina or get lost in the alleyways towards the souqs. Marvel at the tilework found in the royal Bahia Palace and Dar Si Said or learn how ancient traditions are woven into the fabric of Marrakech; there’s more than one way to fall in love with this cosmopolitan city.

Morocco is a North African country renowned for diversity, and this is one of the things that make it such a fascinating destination to visit. It’s a place where one will find many cultural influences, and the landscape offers visitors a chance to experience the ocean, Atlas Mountain peaks and the Sahara Desert all in one go. You might be travelling to one country, but in Morocco, there is a whole world to explore.

In Essaouira discover how coastal winds and different tribes can shape a port city. It’s a melting pot with Arab, Berber and European influences. While the sea attracts windsurfers, culture vultures flock to the medina’s alleyways for galleries and a spot of people watching. The vibrancy found in the country’s cities is matched by life in the Middle Atlas Mountains, where visitors can swap people watching and fortified walls for hiking, folk music and stargazing.

Observe nomadic shepherds, hike through limestone river canyons, enjoy impressive views and Berber hospitality and warmth as you make Midelt your basecamp for the Middle Atlas Mountains. As the sun goes down on the soaring peaks, the stars will light up the skies.

If we’ve inspired you to explore this north African country further, head over to TourRadar for all the different ways you can discover a world of flavour, culture and history in Morocco.

Walking Tour of Modern Marrakech — Morocco Africa Video Walk【4K】????????

A Camera Floating Among The Crowd. Walking Around The Modern Area of Marrakech Gueliz in 4K by Wanna Walk.

A real traveler needs a holistic view of a city so in sharp contrast to the Marrakech medina area, Gueliz it's a must see to get a better idea of how Morocco's really is. This is where the modern Morocco citizens like spend time. As you may know, there are two very distinctive areas in Marrakesh: one is the Old Medina (old city) and the new Marrakesh, which is a kinda European style district called Ville Nouvelle or Gueliz. If you wanna walk, everything can be seen on foot but a GPS is key.

It was an a surprise to find the modern part of Marrakech because it linked modernity with tradition. Beautiful buildings respecting Arabic architecture painted with Marroquin traditional colors, shapes, balconies (re-inventing the Jewish characteristic of the Medina), etc.
Large avenues, gardens full of beautiful and exotic plants, flowers and trees, imposing squares, lovely fountains but above all a very cosmopolitan atmosphere. If you know other Moroccan towns or even other African towns, you will be positively surprised by the organization, cleanness, security and diversity of Marrakech

Ville Nouvelle or Gueliz it's the complete opposite to old Marrakech in terms of what the people are like, how they dress, food that's eaten and atmosphere. Worth a visit just to see a new angle. The heart of the new part of Marrakech, the Gueliz region offers an alternative vibe to the traditional and relaxed old medina atmosphere. Here we explore the most unmissable activities in this Moroccan area.

Walking in The Medina
Marrakech Street Walk 4K

I must say that this it's not the best of places to go to in Marrakech if you only want to know the tradicional old culture but, after a few days, the Marrakech Old Medina may overwhelm you. Yes, it's beautiful and nostalgic and there are tons of things to see and but, you may need a break. Who doesn't? This area its just a few minutes away the Medina Souks and it's more relaxed. You will find a more western style of life with coffee stores and shops. Most people speak English, French, Spanish and of course, Arabic. This is the place where you find essentials things like water, groceries, SIM cards, Zara Store, H&M, Starbucks and even Mcdonalds. Although Gueliz its modern and cosmopolitan, you feel you still in Africa. Very modern buildings, nice shops and restaurants, very lively neighbourhood.

This area it's completely different from the Medina and closer to the feeling of big cities around the world. Interesting to see how Moroccan culture applies to a modern environment. Give yourself a pause from these chaotic narrow streets and dust from the Old Medina. Jemaa el Fna is not far from Gueliz. You can just walk, it's close and pretty safe. Anyway a 5 euro taxi can ride you there. New town is part of the Marrakech culture too and you'll be close to the action and culture.

How do you say it: Marrakech or Marrakesh? Don’t worry, both are okay! Marrakech Morocco in 4K by Wanna Walk - The common English spelling is Marrakesh and Marrakech in French is also widely used. I was told that the name Marrakech comes from the words amur kush which means The Land of God. This is the third largest city in Morocco with less population than Casablanca and Fez. The city lies near of the Atlas Mountains and it's pretty close to the Sahara Desert. Be sure to also visit the square of Jemaa El-Fna is very popular, in particular in the Marrakech's night. Lovely atmosphere at night in Gueliz, vibrant and safe. Much more fun to stay in Gueliz and then dip in and out of the medina.

The markets of Marrakech (Souks or suuqs) close to Place Djemaa El-Fna offers almost anything, from souvenirs to spices, tea pots, tanginess, shoes, and much more. Being a foreigner means you'll pay more. The Koutoubia Mosque is right besides Djemaa El-Fna. The minaret of the mosque very popular and visible from almost all the city. As with most mosques in Morocco, non-Muslims are not allowed inside.

First Thoughts on Morocco | Exploring The Streets of Marrakech

We have said goodbye to the UK and flown all the way to Morocco for the very first time! Very excited to be here - these are our first impressions!

First up we left London Heathrow to fly British Airways for the first time towards Marrakesh. Upon arrival our Airbnb host organized a hotel transfer for us (which we highly recommend doing).

The next day we explored the streets of Marrakech, going into the Medina and markets to try and attempt to do some shopping and enjoying a quiet Friday afternoon in the Jemma El Fna.

To end our first few days in Marrakech we did a tajine cooking class.

Marrakech, guide 2020

Marrakech, a city I used to live in for over 2 years. So much to show, but I took some parts I think are interesting for most.
I have included som tips and tricks as always.

What is the true price with Taxi between Jemaa El Fna and plaza, with counter? Sad but true....... (Good Metalica song)... the true price between Jemaa el fna and Plaza, daytime is 8 dh and after 20:00 / 8 pm in the evening its 10 dh.
So after watching other Youtubers staying a few days in Marrakech and is saying it cost 40 dh between Plaza and Jemaa el fna I had to do some corrections...We should help each other to fight for the right to have real good prices. :)
Another tip I can give you when it comes to taxi.... if you are up to 3 people, the price is for the trip, NOT for each passanger, that some taxi driver would say IF he is kind to start the counter instead of scamming with a fixed price.

Last tip, that makes me even the enemy nr 1 for all taxi drivers in all of Morocco... the starting price for the counter daytime should be 1,77 or 2 dh and in evening after 20:00/ 8 pm is 2:55 or 3 depending on how new counter they have in the taxi. Be aware daytime when the counter passes 3 dh, sometimes the taxi driver stop the counter and create a new trip with starting price 3 dh, that means the taxi driver now drives with the night tarriff.
Maybe this is small money for most tourists, but for me who lived 7 years in Morocco, I wanted to have same price as Maroc people had....

And, the price is for the TRIP, not for EACH person.
Same with taxi from/ to the airport of Marrakech. The price is 70 dh for the TRIP, not for each person. 90% of all taxi drivers are scammers in Marrakech, so be aware.
I walk as much as possible, and the distance between Guliz/plaza and Jemaa el fna is around 1,5 km. not so far to walk right?

MARRAKECH MOROCCO TRAVEL GUIDE

#MARRAKECH #MOROCCO

Prepare for your senses to be slapped. Marrakesh's heady sights and sounds will dazzle, frazzle and enchant. Put on your babouches (leather slippers) and dive right in.

Artisan Heritage
Bahia Palace and the Dar Si Said are a riot of tilework and intricate floral painted-wood ceilings, the Saadian Tombs are enriched by an opulent bounty of marble, while the Musée de Mouassine and Musée de Marrakech are a showcase of swirling stucco and carved-wood design. And if you choose to bed down for a night in a riad, you'll be able to sleep amid some of this splendour too. Marrakesh is a city steeped in ancient artistry that continues to thrive, kept alive by the modern craftspeople of the souqs and the contemporary art and design scene of the Ville Nouvelle.

Faith & Culture
You’ll understand how religion permeates the rhythms of daily life when you hear the sonorous call to prayer echo out from the mosques. As an old imperial capital, Marrakesh is home to some beautiful examples of Islamic architecture, most impressively the Ali Ben Youssef Medersa and the Koutoubia minaret. The city also holds on to a heritage of the other religious communities that once helped it become a vibrant caravan town. Head to the old Jewish district of the mellah to visit the Lazama Synagogue and the Miaara Jewish cemetery to gain a greater understanding of Marrakesh's cosmopolitan past.

Souq Shopping
Think of the medina's souqs as a shopping mall, but laid out according to a labyrinthine medieval-era plan. Whether you want to spice up your pantry with North African flavours or buy a carpet to add Moroccan-wow to your house, this magpie's nest of treasures is manna for shop-til-you-drop fanatics.

The main market streets are Souq Semmarine and Souq El Kebir. If you see something you really like there, fine – but understand prices will be higher. Smaller souqs and souqs dedicated to artisan workshops such as Souq Haddadine (Blacksmith’s Souq), where you can buy direct from the producer, generally have the best deals.

The Medina
Got your map ready? Well, it's probably of little use to you here. Wrapped within the 19 kilometres of powder-pink rammed-earth ramparts, the medina is Marrakesh's show-stopping sight of crowded souqs, where sheep carcasses swing from hooks next door to twinkling lamps, and narrow, doodling ochre-dusted lanes lead to nowhere. The main artery into this mazy muddle is the vast square of Djemaa El Fna, where it's carnival night every night. Stroll between snail vendors, soothsayers, acrobats and conjurers, musicians and slapstick acting troupes to discover the old city's frenetic pulse. The party doesn't end until the lights go out.
