MAKING STRANGERS SMILE | Sailing Indonesia, Ep 154

With all the negativity in the world, it is pretty easy to make someone smile!

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we are still at the island of Simeulue off the west coast of Sumatra. this sleepy laid back island is as close to a free range farm as you can get! With limited protected anchorages along this coast line, we explore the island by land. We hire a scooter and dodge all the farm animals and their land mines, as we take the hog down some jungle tracks looking for waves.
It is pretty easy to make a stranger smile. We have an old surfboard we wish to give away and we head down the beach in search of some grommets to pass it on to. It was actually harder to do then it sounds! But we perceiver and one lucky lad is the proud new owner of a surfboard!!

With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra where we are living the island life and chasing the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we are returning to Thailand in the coming months and then taking the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! The adventure is just beginning!

We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World!

Relationships ain't easy on a Boat | Sailing Indonesia, Ep 152

It can be super hard on your relationship to live on a boat. Some cold hard truth...

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, some cold hard truth. Relationships ain't easy on a boat. Sailing to super remote places like the islands off of Indonesia requires a solid relationship. We live in a small area of space, are always on top of one another. There is no escape and we are together all the time! How does that affect your relationship? Where do you go if you need to get some space or have an argument. You can't exactly sleep on the couch 2m away from your partner...

BOAT LIFE: Don't Fight the Weather | Sailing Indonesia, Ep 146

With a massive swell on the way, the captain wants to go south...

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, after both Yosh and Bonita go separate ways to complete some solo challenges, they are reunited and back together again on Nandji. With Yosh's birthday around the corner he is determined to head south and surf a new wave he has dreamt about for years. With a massive ground swell forecast for the day, they bash their way south into the relentless strong trade winds and choppy seas... Don't fight the Weather. Just another day of boat life!

With our Sailing plans changing, we are returning to Thailand in the coming months and then taking the northern route of the Indian Ocean to the Andaman islands and onto Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trades begin again! Living the Hammock Life | Sailing Indonesia (Sailing Nandji) Ep 143

Get Surfshark VPN at Enter promo code SAILINGNANDJI for 83% off and one extra month for free!

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we spend the last few days with our friends from home onboard. Whilst the lads are out surfing, the girls are tired of standing behind the cameras and make their own fun, living the hammock life!

Bonita and Tash are taken to the playful wave of Bengs Bengs to try and get a few amongst the masses. We then have a minor problem where the captain did not prepare the boat properly before leaving... What a good excuse to have a beach bomb fire and cook in the coals with our last night with friends on board before over night sail back to Padang to drop Tash and Teebs off to the airport.

With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra where we are living the island life and chasing the surf before our big crossing!

We departed Australia in July 2017 and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! PIRATES! Are we about to get ATTACKED? | Sailing Indonesia, Ep 149

At 3 in the morning whilst at sea a vessel charges at us... Pirates? What do you do?

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we are faced with every sailors worst nightmare. We are under sail on passage miles off the coast when a vessel charges straight at us. We gybe, change course and the vessel does the same thing and continually charges straight at us... What do you do? Pirates?

We have been sailing in Indonesian waters for the past 5 months and have now over the last 2 years sailed all the way through the Indonesian islands from East to West. We have not feared pirate attack, but should we have?

At the end of the last episode whilst happily sailing at 4 knots a boat charges at us and puts us under their spot light. What do we do? Lets discuss this situation and we would love to hear what you would do if in the same situation...

I think this dress is perfect for Yachting...

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we head to the city of Sibolga on the West Coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. We head into this city which is far from a tourist destination and are greeted and followed by many curious kids. With our jobs done, it is back to sea we go on passage north towards the Banyak islands. On passage Bonita cleans out her closet and we are surprised to find the goodies in store! Not So Grotty Yachty anymore!!

With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! What can Lithium Power? - ELECTRICAL BOAT TECH (6 of 7) - Sailing Vessel Delos

I go over some of the major differences between 24V and 12V systems and talk about what it is realistic to power off of Lithium batteries and a large inverter onboard. We also talk about lot's of FAQ's that are listed below:

Why do people care about watts?
What fridges and freezers can you run off solar and wind?
How much does Air conditioning draw, and can we run it off our solar?
Do we power our laptops with a DC to DC converter or via the inverter?
Is it possible to maintain a 48V battery bank?
Is a 24V DC system practical?
What are the benefits of a 24VDC system?
Solar arch- Why don’t we have our dinghy on davits off the solar arch?
What is the make and model of our inverter?
Could we incorporate water collection into our solar panels.
Is there a difference in the taste of desalinated water?
Have we ever had issued with the solar panels in high wind?
Are the lithium batteries physically the same size as lead batteries?
What about safety with Lithium batteries?

*Who are we?*
We are a European couple from Germany (Alex) and the Netherlands (Mandy), sailing around the Med on our 36ft sailboat. Six months ago we started our journey in Greece with little sailing experience, figuring things out as we go, not really knowing what we're doing. Our goal is to circumnavigate the world via the wind, always being surrounded by the ocean. Sailboat life is super different from land life and can be pretty rough at times. see the little things is the documentary of our endeavour of simplifying life, decelerating pace, and practicing mindfulness. Follow our adventures when you are curious to see how we mess up and fix it up again! We are currently still sailing Greece, but will head over to Italy and beyond soon.

Elephants of Thailand (Sailing Nandji) Ep 123

With an afternoon off in Thailand, we visit the Ethical Elephant Sanctuary.

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we are in Thailand! After needing a mountain of stainless steel fabricated for our refit of Nandji we decided to head to Thailand on Uncles boat as the craftsman ship is much better than Langkawi at a more affordable price. We set off for a week long trip and hoped to get everything made in the short time we planned to stay. After riding around on our scooters for over 4 hours a day chasing up and organising the work to be done, we found ourselves with an afternoon off in Phuket!

Bonita had heard of an ethical Elephant Sanctuary where they care for old disabled elephants. The sanctuary buys the Elepahnts from around Thailand from people who mistreat and abuse the elephants and then offer them a safe natural place for them to live in their normal habitat. Having no idea where to go, we set off on our scooter trying to find and learn more about this amazing place!

With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We have just sailed 2000nm through Indonesia and have arrived to Malaysia to complete major boat work, ready for the next big adventure. We departed Australia 18 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced different cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades! Indian Ocean here we come!!
