Ankarana Special Reserve in northern Madagascar was created in 1956. It is a small, partially vegetated plateau composed of 150-million-year-old Middle Jurassic limestone. With an average annual rainfall of about 2,000 millimetres (79 in), the underlying rocks are susceptible to erosion, thereby producing caves and underground rivers—a karst topography. The rugged relief and the dense vegetation have helped protect the region from human intrusion.
The plateau slopes gently to the east, but on the west it ends abruptly in the Wall of Ankarana, a sheer cliff that extends 25 kilometres (16 mi) north to south, and rises as high as 280 metres (920 ft). To the south, the limestone mass breaks up into separate spires known as tower karst. In the center of the plateau, seismic activity and eons of rainfall have dissolved the limestone away in deep gorges, and sometimes redeposited it in ribbons of flowstone. In places where the calcific upper layers have been completely eroded, the harder base rock has been etched into channels and ridges known as tsingy.
The largest sinkhole in the Ankarana karst region, Mangily sinkhole, measures up to 700 metres (2,300 ft) across and 140 metres (460 ft) deep with a volume of 25 million cubic metres (33,000,000 cu yd). The area is sacred to the Antankarana people, who have historically taken refuge from encroaching enemy armies in its caves and other natural rock shelters.

Ankarana National Park, situated in north Madagascar, has a variety of attractions – the grey Tsingy, massive caves, mysterious sinkholes and unique flora and fauna.

13b - Ankarana NP (Madagascar 2022)
This is part 13(b) of our trip to Madagascar (may 9 - june 26 2022).
Ankarana is famous for its beautiful tsingy formations, but you have to make a long hike to see the most beautiful parts of the parc (like we did in 2004)
We started our trip in busy Tana (Antananarivo) and visited the Kings palace and walked in the ricefields just outside town.
The roundtrip started (after a flight) in Tuliar in the south, where our driver/guide Nick waited for us. The south is very dry and the 'spiny forest' covers the landscape further south.
Next stop was Isalo, a parc that reminds you of the beautiful parcs of Utah (USA). On the way we stopped in Zombitse to see the beautiful Verraux sifaka.
Next stops were Andringitra, Ranamofana and Andringitra. From there we drove in 3 days to the spectaculair Tsingy de Bamaraha and returned to Tana.
After a flight to Diego Suarez Richard waited for us to be our guide in the north. The highlights there are Ankarana (tsingy), Red Tsingy and Montagne d'Ambre.
After returning to Tana again we visited the famous Andisabe and Mantadia parcs and after a long drive the Palmarium lodge in the Pangalanes (large channels parallel to the rough sea).
Our trip ended under the palm trees of Ile St Marie.

La Réserve spéciale d'Ankarana fait partie du réseau d'aires protégées de Madagascar. Elle est située à 150 km au sud de Diego Suarez et 30 km au nord d'Ambilobe.
Ce parc national est une réserve pour les crocodiles (animaux sacrés), chauve souris, oiseaux (dont le Mésite varié, l'oiseau le plus rare du monde), lémuriens, serpents. Il est composé d'une forêt caducifolée, d'orchidées aériennes et de végétation rupicole.

Au nord-ouest de Madagascar, non loin des plages et des cocotiers, règne un étrange monde minéral. Sur plus de cent kilomètres de long, ce royaume d'aiguilles calcaires pétrifiées, parfois hautes de 20 à 30 m, compose le paysage du massif de l'Ankarana. Appelés Tsingy, ces reliefs d'allure hostile, souvent tranchants comme des lames de rasoir, sont le fruit d'une érosion vieille de dizaines de millions d'années et cachent un inextricable réseau de grottes souterraines. Ankarana expedition (Madagascar)
A 4x4 trip to the remote western part of Ankara, famous for it's beautiful Tsingy rocks. From our campsite we made several hikes into the beautiful Tsingy mountains, discovering several different maki's, large snakes, chameleons, beautiful birds and colourful frogs.

Les Tsingy constituée d' un ensemble d'affleurements rocheux formé de pics calcaire sculptés par l'érosion, cette réserve présente , avec des grottes ( la grotte des chauves-souris ) , des gorges et collines (canyons) , des paysages volcaniques. La végétation est typique des plateaux karstiques, avec une forêt sèche saisonnière sur sol basaltique., la réserve naturelle de l'Ankarana fascinante également par sa faune et sa flore uniques associée aux surprenants « Tsingy » .
