Luzon to Mindanao Part 9: Sorsogon City to Matnog Port

The 2nd segment of Day 2 covers from Shell Gas Station in Sorsogon City just after the Sorsogon Diversion Road up to Matnog Port covering 62+Km within 65+Min driving time. AH26 is very good except the usual stretched where roadworks being are done. Passed one accident between 2 units x 6 wheelers which seemed a head on collision about 2Km past Irosin marker going to Matnog. The red truck is almost fully compressed.

Arrived in Matnog about 0900hrs or 3 hours before the 1200hrs RoRo schedule since this is our first time to be in a RoRo. Done the formalities & waited at the parking area of Matnog Ferry Terminal. Details of the RoRo procedure is described in the next video segment: Luzon to Mindanao Part 10: Matnog Port to Calbayog City

The following towns were passed with the description taken from WIKI:
• City of Sorsogon is a 3rd class city and capital of the province of Sorsogon with 64 barangays. It serves a trans-shipment point from the Visayas and Mindanao provinces, and is dubbed as the Gateway to Southern Philippines. It is one of the region's leading cities in urbanization and the most promising city in terms of development.
• Casiguran, is a 4th class municipality in the province of Sorsogon with 25 barangays. Established in the year 1600, Casiguran was the first missionary parish of Sorsogon. When the Spaniards first set foot in this part of Luzon in the 1570s, Casiguran was considered as their center of Kabikolan.
• Juban, is a 4th class municipality in the province of Sorsogon with 25 barangays. One can see several old houses lining up AH26/ Maharlika Highway at the town center with Casa Feliz as one of them.
• Irosin, is a 2nd class municipality in the province of Sorsogon with 28 barangays. It has many potential tourist spots varying from natural parks, hot and cold springs, viewing areas and historical landmark. The famous tourism attractions in the municipality are the Mateo Hot and Cold Spring Resort, St. Michael Archangel Roman Catholic Hilltop Church and protected areas.
• Matnog, is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Sorsogon with 40 barangays. The native people of Matnog are the Agta, Tabangon, and Cimaron Tribe. The site of one of the busiest seaports in the Philippines, it is the jump off point to the southern Philippines and vice versa.

Luzon to Mindanao Part 8: Legazpi City, Albay to Sorsogon City

Day 2 covers around an Est. 226Km from Legaspi City, Albay to Calbayog City, Samar. Total driving distance is about +188Km & the ferry distance between Matnog & San Isidro Ferry Terminals is 38Km or 20.5 Nautical Miles. This was broken down to 3 video segments so as the uploading time will not be that long. Used the FastCat RoRo service by booking & paying online.

The 1st segment of Day 2 covers La Piazza Hotel in Legaspi City up to Shell Gas Station in Sorsogon City just after the Sorsogon Diversion Road covering 70Km within 100+Min driving time
The original plan is to go through AH26/ Maharlika Highway by joining it from the hotel to Binitayan Road in Daraga. Just about 200meters after turning right from Shell at the corner of AH 26 & Bicol 630, roadworks starts. Traffic was stalled as there was a trailer which got stuck as its wheel fell on the roadworks embankment. Waited for 30 minutes then the vehicles behind started reversing to find alternate route. Followed suit then took Bicol 640 route till Banquerohan then turned right at Banquerohan-Bariis-Sogoy-Sorsogon Boundary Road up to reaching AH26/ Maharlika Highway. Surprisingly the whole 26+Km of alternate route was good with some twisties.

The following towns were passed:
• Legazpi City, is a 1st Class component city and the capital of the province of Albay. The city is composed of two districts: Legazpi Port and Old Albay District. Mayon Volcano, one of the Philippines' most popular icons and tourist destinations, is partly within the city's borders. Source: WIKI
• Daraga is a 1st class municipality in the province of Albay with 54 barangays. It will be the site of the future Bicol International Airport which will further boost tourism in the region and will introduce more opportunities especially in this town. Source: WIKI
• Castilla, is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Sorsogon with 34 barangays. Farming and fishing are the main employment opportunities but are characteristically seasoned in nature. Castilla has 13 coastal barangays, which depend on fishing as the main economic activity. Source: WIKI
Source: WIKI

The 4th segment of Day 3 is the reverse of the 3rd segment. This starts from Balangiga to Kamot Monument Park before the boundary marker of Samar & Leyte before San Juanico Bridge. This leg covers 76+Km within almost 90mins driving time. Taken lunch at Balangiga Kainan & Catering Services where they serve home cooked Filipino dishes at affordable price. Did not stop in Saob Cave but have taken pictures of the marker which is along the road. Visited St Michael The Archangel Parish Church in Basey but unfortunately the church was closed.

The following towns were passed southbound direction: Balangiga, Lawaan, Marabut, Basey then Santa Rita.

Mindanao to Luzon, Part 3: Catbalogan City to Calbayog City

Day 2 of the return trip: Mindanao to Luzon covers around an Est. 107+Km from Go Hotel Tacloban City, Leyte. Dropped for some pictures at San Juanico Bridge where Commander-In-Chief was scared because the bridge is shaking with every vehicle passing ????.

The second segment is Mindanao to Luzon, Part 3: Catbalogan City to Calbayog City. Road condition in Samar is fair with some areas undergoing repair or widening & some are in desperate need of repair ☹. Be attentive of the patched areas where the elevation with the old road is not the same so the vehicle can jump when driving in a higher speed.

Luzon to Mindanao Part 12: Catbalogan City to Santa Rita, Samar

The 2nd segment of Day 3 starts from Shell Gas Station at Catbalogan Diversion Road up to the weighbridge of DPWH at Santa Rita before San Juanico Bridge since we are taking Junction Taft-Oras-San Policarpo-Arteche Road to Balangiga. This leg covers 93+Km within almost 2 hrs. driving time. Hinabangan Bridge at AH26 was under repair so traffic was diverted to the town center.

A funny thing happened in Paranas where Home Minister saw a small girl walking at the roadside clutching an urn like jar. The location have no houses & upon passing the girl, she has vanished. God bless the girl in whatever form she is.

The following towns were passed southbound direction: Catbalogan City, Jiabong, Motiong, Paranas, Hinabangan, San Sebastian, Calbiga, Pinabacdao then arriving in Santa Rita.

Soundtrack by JOSH WOODWARD.
