Hello friends, Lukla Airport, officially known as Tenzing-Hillary Airport, is a small domestic airport in the town of Lukla in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal. It is one of the most famous and challenging airports in the world due to its short and inclined runway, surrounded by mountainous terrain. The airport is named after Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, who were the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953.
Lukla Airport is situated at an elevation of 2,845 meters (9,334 feet) in the Himalayas.

The airport has a single runway with a length of about 527 meters (1,729 feet) and a gradient of approximately 12%. The short and sloping runway makes takeoffs and landings challenging, especially in adverse weather conditions.

The airport primarily handles domestic flights, especially from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. The flights are operated by various Nepalese airlines, and they provide a crucial link for people traveling to the Everest region.

Despite the challenges, the flight to Lukla offers stunning views of the Himalayan mountains, providing passengers with a breathtaking aerial experience.
Trekkers and climbers use Lukla Airport as a starting point for their adventure in the Everest region, heading toward destinations such as Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Everest Base Camp. Landing at the World's Most Dangerous Tenzing-Hillary Lukla Airport (2800m) - Day 4.4

The Summmit Air airplane took off from Ramechhap Airport (493m), navigating for around 20 minutes through the valleys and mountains to land (4:07) in Lukla (2800m). The pilot (5:12) was kind enough to open the side curtain (1:22), sensing that I am trying to record the cockpit view of the landing.

Tenzing-Hillary Airport (IATA: LUA, ICAO: VNLK), also known as simply Lukla Airport, is a domestic airport and altiport in the town of Lukla, in Khumbu Pasanglhamu, Solukhumbu District, Province No. 1 of Nepal ( It gained worldwide fame as it was rated the most dangerous airport in the world for more than 20 years by a program titled Most Extreme Airports, broadcast on The History Channel in 2010. Tenzing–Hillary Airport is frequently referred to as the most dangerous airport in the world. Arriving and departing aircraft must use a single very short runway (06/24). There is a low prospect of a successful go-around on short final approach due to the terrain. There is high terrain immediately beyond the northern end of the runway and a steeply angled drop at the southern end of the runway into the valley below. Due to the difficulties of successfully landing at the airport, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal sets high standards, according to which only experienced pilots, who have completed at least 100 short-takeoff-and-landing (STOL) missions, have over one year of STOL experience in Nepal, and have completed ten flights into Lukla with a certified instructor pilot, are allowed to land at the airport.

The model of the airplane is Let L-410 Turbolet, which is a twin-engine short-range transport aircraft, manufactured by the Czech aircraft manufacturer Let Kunovice (named Aircraft Industries since 2005), often used as an airliner. The aircraft is capable of landing on short and unpaved runways and operating under extreme conditions from −50 °C (−58 °F) to +50 °C (122 °F). By 2016, 1,200 L-410s had been built, and over 350 are in service in more than 50 countries (

LUKLA AIRPORT IN THE 90S - LANDING AND TAKEOFF

Enjoy watching landing and take off at Lukla airport in the 90s, you won't believe it.
Why Lukla airport is known as the world's most dangerous airport? let me explain to you a bit. Maybe most of you don’t know the official name of the airport in Lukla, which is also called Tenzing Hillary Airport, named after Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary, the first two people to climb Mount Everest.

Tenzing Hillary Airport in Lukla in the Everest region is known as the gateway to Everest and this is also known as “the world’s most dangerous airport, with reasons. Over the past 20 years, there have been seven deadly accidents, killing over 50 passengers and crew.

Maybe you guys are wondering, what is it that makes landing at Lukla so unsafe?

The thinner air at high altitudes at an elevation of 2840m, makes it more difficult for engines to generate thrust. Meanwhile, the reduced resistance also makes it harder to slow down the plane, which means the longer the runway, the better. However, the Lukla Airport runway is only 527m with an 11.7% gradient.

Lukla is only a 30-minute flight from Kathmandu. In 2019 more than 100,000 passengers landed in Tenjin Hillary airport and most passengers are heading towards trekking and expeditions in the Everest region.

I hope you find it interesting

planes landing and takeoff at lukla airport / the most dangerous airport in the world.

Lukla Airport at an elevation of 2860m from sea level, also known as Tenzing Hillary Airport, is a very tiny airstrip in Solu Khumbu. Only the downier and Twin Otter planes land and take up from there because of the short runway. It is said that it is one of the most dangerous airport in the world but it is not true because hundreds of trekkers fly to Lukla and more than 40-50 flights operate in peak seasons like October and November by different airlines i.e. Tara Air, Goma Air, Sita Air, and Smirk Air.
It takes 25-35 minutes from Kathmandu to land at Lukla and the flight is very scenic, offering the beautiful scenery of villages, rivers, forests, and of course the high snow-capped mountains.
