Trying to find Colombia’s Lost City | Adventure Hike to Teyuna also known as Ciudad Perdida
Discover Teyuna! It's older than Machu Picchu and not quite as famous. Known in Spanish as Ciudad Perdida or the Lost City, it is located deep in the jungles of northern Colombia. You need weather-proof clothing and sturdy shoes for the four-day trek to the archeological site. Our reporter Joel Dullroy is making the adventurous journey to the Lost City. Join him on his trip!
Background: The ruins of Teyuna were once settled by the indigenous Tairona people. Their descendants still live today in the Wika and Kogi tribes in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

Trek to the Lost City in Colombia (Ciudad Perdida)
We trekked 46km over four days in the Colombia Jungle to reach the amazing archeological site called the Lost City (or Ciudad Perdida in Spanish). Unlike Machu Picchu, you must hike to reach this amazing place!
This site was built around 800AD and was only rediscovered again in 1972.
We would highly recommend this hike for anyone looking for a challenging but rewarding hike that is very rich in history.

Today’s video is super exciting & has been a very long time in the making…. (Oops!)
Whilst visiting Colombia last year, Myself & Mike trekked across the Colombian wilderness for 4 days… in order to discover The Lost City - aka La Ciudad Perdida.
This Trek truly was one of a kind & 10000% worth it.
As you’ll come to find in this travel vlog - It was by no means easy. In fact, it was - to date - the hardest, most challenging thing I have EVER done…. But boy was it worth it!
When you sign up for the trek, there are many different options. We decided to do the 4 day trek, which is the most challenging as you cover the most ground in the shortest space of time. You can however opt for 5/6 day treks in order to have more recovery time & less walking each day. It is completely up to you & your preferences.
The tour company we went with:
& our guide: Miguel /Michael - he was truly amazing & had such great energy! You would be lucky to get him hehe
The whole tour itself was so well organised, the route was clear, there were plenty of breaks with water, juice, fruit & places to buy other snacks and beverages. The lunches & dinners were hearty & wholesome and the beds clean and comfy - what more could you ask for!? We were truly looked after!

LOST CITY TREK - Ciudad Perdida near Santa Marta, Colombia!
This 4-Day Guided Trek takes you to Ciudad Perdida AKA the Lost City of Tayuna in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Park in Colombia. I went with Expotur and would highly recommend them.
The trek leaves from Santa Marta and I believe it cost me around $350 with everything included aside from beer, extra snacks, and souvenirs. We were well fed and hydrated and the camps were all pretty comfortable. We even had some electricity to keep our devices charged to capture the amazing experience.
Hiking Statistics:
~ 25,000 steps per day
~ 10 miles per day
~ 200 flights climbed per day
~ 2,000 feet elevation per day
~ 2,000 calories burned per day

The best hiking trail in Colombia, The lost city trek was one of the most incredible long distance hiking trails I have completed so far!
After reading a number of Lost City Trek reviews, we decided to book with Teyuna Tours
Who provided a fantastic tour with outstanding customer service.
The Ciudad Perdida hike starts in the village of El Mamey, we were picked up from our hostel in Santa Marta and driven there by mini van where we met for lunch and joined our group and lost city trek guide.
We chose to do the 5 days option as it was the same price and would give us a little extra time on day 4 to film and enjoy the stunning natural pools and beauty of the trail.
Lost city trek Santa Marta is a 29 mile there and back long distance hiking trail through the mountainous jungle region of the Sierra Nevada. It passes through two indigenous villages belonging to the WIWA and Kogi tribes. The lost city itself is an absolute wonder! Built in 800AD by the Tairona civilisation and only discovered by looters in the 1970’s, it is 600 years older than Macchu Pichu!
Lost city trek difficulty
Although the trail isn’t very long, the humidity and terrain make this a difficult hike, suitable for anyone with a good level of fitness. There are steep ascents and descents. Ciudad Perdida Colombia sits at 1200m above seal level and the trail has in total 2649m of elevation.
There are points on the trail where you can hire a mule to ride if you were struggling, but we preferred to stick to hiking.
Accommodation in the camps along the trail are a combination of bunk beds, hammock camping and tents. The camps all have washing facilities and your 3 meals a days are provided by the tour company and are very filling.
I highly recommend doing the Lost City Trek tour, it was an amazing experience! Remember to take plenty of bug spray, a waterproof jacket and decent hiking boots. You can hire a rucksack and trekking poles from the tour company if you haven’t brought your own.
The highlight of the trip for us, aside from the incredible views, was meeting the Shaman of the Kogi tribe and a member of the WIWA tribe who taught us about their customs and traditions.

WE SURVIVED!! For 4 days and 3 nights we Trekked through the depths of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta Jungle in the hope of finding the ancient city La Ciudad Perdida, also known as The Lost City.
The Lost City Trek Colombia also know as Ciudad Perdida Trek is one of the best things to do in Colombia and a popular Colombian attraction.
Trekking in Colombia is not for the faint hearted! When Hiking the Lost City we faced HUGE challenges: Intense heat, steep uphill and downhill climbs, river crossings and more, so reaching the city and Exploring Colombia's Lost City was a HUGE achievement! Along our Multiday trek in Colombia we had the privilege of meeting Indigenous tribes in Sierra Nevada which was a huge highlight.
This Trek was our FIRST in Colombia and on our 7 Month South America trip, so it definitely came with some learnings!
