Los Angeles Travel Tips: 13 Things to Know Before You Go to LA

Things you need to know before you travel to Los Angeles California. LA is HUGE. You won't be able to see all of LA, unless you're staying for a very very long time. Los Angeles doesn't have a center and Downtown LA is not very exciting. LA is comprised of multiple cities Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Malibu. Get a rental car - You'll need it to see most tourist attractions in Los Angeles.
2. Traffic
- LA has traffic everywhere, all the time. All day, every day. Yes, even at 1am on a weekend. Deal with it.
- The freeways have names -- it's not I-405 -- it's THE 405
3. Public Transit
- LA has a subway!
- But it probably doesn't go where you want! Especially the beach!
4. Parking
- Is often Valet
- and Costs money everywhere
- Except when you're parking on the freeway :)
- Pay attention to street signs (confusing times and days)
5. Navigation
- Know where you're going and take the correct exit
- Take the wrong exit and you might end up in some place really sketchy
- Lots of little cities, the street numbering changes in different cities
6. Weather
- LA is not always sunny and warm
- It gets cold -- particularly at night
- Shorts in the day, but pants and a jacket at night
- And the ocean water is cold too... 70 degrees is as warm as it gets
- Inland can be 30 degrees warmer than the beach
- Lots of sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- It's dry -- moisturizer
7. LA is unlike the rest of California
- It can feel like a different country, or at least a different state
- Venice Beach in particular
8. Hollywood is in the neighborhood called Hollywood
- West Hollywood is in front of the Hollywood sign (and a different city) with Fancy homes
- East Hollywood doesn't have much
- North Hollywood over the mountain is a suburb of LA
- Oh by the way -- no actors in Hollywood
- And if you go see a 30 minute sitcom taping it will take 4+ hours
9. The Valley
- Means San Fernando Valley
- Burbank, Studio City, North Hollywood, Van Nuys
10. LA's most well known attractions are also some of the most rundown
- Hollywood Boulevard or is Tijuana?
- Venice Beach, oh my lord
11. LA is casual
- Flip flops and shorts are OK except in the most dressy establishments
12. Bring your own shopping bag
- Supermarkets charge 10 cents for shopping bags in California
13. Mexican Food in LA is awesome
- Get some fish tacos!
- And visit King Taco!

Los Angeles Travel Hacks: Top 10 LA Travel Tips

Things you need to know before you travel to Los Angeles California. We have gathered the 10 best LA Travel Hacks for you!

1. The Los Angeles traffic is terrible: you need to plan where and when you want to go. I
2. If you intend to only visit the city of Los Angeles and won’t be doing a road trip, then don't take a car.
3. Even though California is always sunny, it does not mean it is always warm.
4. Go on the VIP Tour at the Universal Studios.
5. Shopping hacks? Shops along the Abbot Kinney Blvd in Venice, are quite nice as well as shops in Melrose Ave
6. Spend a day on Venice Beach. In my opinion it is much more worthwhile than spending a day in Santa Monica.
7. Even though you will probably not afford to buy anything at Rodeo Drive, it's still worth going there for some window shopping.
8. Most tourists are disappointed when they see the ever-so famous Hollywood Boulevard for the first time. That's probably because they imagined the Walk of Fame to be more glamorous, when in reality it's just a normal street. However, there are some good things to know about this boulevard ;)
9. Getting around: download either the Bird app, or the Lime app and hop on a scooter whenever you need to take a trip to LA.
10. The secret spot to have the Hollywood sign all to yourself ;)

Best 13 Things to do in Los Angeles - LA Travel Guide

Visiting Los Angeles: what are the best things to do and see in the City of Angels?

1. Hollywood Boulevard and the Walk of Fame
Obviously, Los Angeles is the city of all the Hollywood stars: between the villas and the swimming pools, it is impossible not to take a minimum interest in this universe of rhinestones and sequins. With its famous stars on its Walk of Fame, its museums (Guinness World Records, Madame Tussauds Hollywood, etc.), its cinemas, its gigantic shopping centers or even the Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Hollywood Boulevard is an essential place to visit in L.A.! You will be amused, with your nose glued to the ground, to discover which star is hiding behind each star.

Located at the end of the famous Hollywood Boulevard, the Dolby Theater (formerly Kodak Theater) is now famous for hosting the prestigious Oscars ceremony every year. Walk on the red carpet too, imagine onlookers piling on top of each other to play paparazzi for a day.

2. Venice Beach is the best Los Angeles tourist attractions
All along the ocean, on the promenade, you will be able to admire artists, sports bodybuilders or even women in bikinis rollerblading and who will put on a show. Even with its did you see me side, Venice Beach is a spot to discover for its warmth, its friendliness, and to fall into the cliché up to your neck, visiting Venice Beach is one of the best things to do in Los Angeles.

3. Universal Studios Hollywood

One of the best places to visit in Los Angeles, Located in the San Fernando Valley, Universal Studios Hollywood are film studios that include an amusement park and are home to unsuspected treasures for all film lovers with world-famous film sets such as Back to the Future or Jurassic Park. More than a theme park, don't forget that this is a working movie studio where you can take a studio tour and explore behind the scenes of some of Universal's most popular films. You can easily spend a day or two here, especially if the park is full and the wait times are long. When you tire of the rides, you can head to CityWalk, a fun spot three blocks away with shops, restaurants, and movie theaters.

4.Disneyland Park

Whether you are vacationing with family, lovers or friends, you should take a day to get to Anaheim, the city where Disneyland Park is located. It is the only Disney theme park designed and seen by Walt Disney himself. Even if you've visited other Disney parks, nothing beats the original.

5. The Hollywood Sign
Intended in 1923 to market a new real estate program, the letters of the Hollywood panel or Hollywood sign, are doomed to disappear. But the Chamber of Commerce will save them in 1949, and the Hollywood sign becomes a historical-cultural monument of Los Angeles in 1973. The sign, located on the southern slope of Mount Lee in Griffith Park, is now a registered trademark. The best way to see the Hollywood Sign is from the Griffith Observatory.

6. Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills is surely the richest and best protected neighborhood in the whole city. Place where many stars reside, it is however not a very interesting spot if you do not pay much attention to the celebrities of the cinema. Each villa is protected by huge hedges or palisades which conceal and protect the privacy of the “people”. However, do not hesitate to ask for a card from the tourist office to make a small pilgrimage and who knows, you could come face to face with your favorite actress?

7. Santa Monica
This area around the Santa Monica Pier is very lively with its small cafes, restaurants and street activities. The beaches of Santa Monica are friendlier than those of Venice Beach and you will have the opportunity to participate in fairground attractions like the famous Ferris wheel. The ideal here is to rent a bike and stroll along the Third Street Promenade, where street artists perform.

8. Griffith Park and its observatory
This unique place is located on the southern slope of Mount Lee where there is also the Hollywood Sign, and offers a surprising view of the city of Los Angeles. This very popular tourist attraction attracts many star lovers for its gigantic planetarium and its exhibition hall, a success in particular due to its free admission. The main attraction of the place is the Zeiss telescope, used to observe the moon and the planets. You can use the telescopes for free every evening (the park is open until 10 p.m.). There are also telescopes used to look at the sun on the site.

Griffith Park is California's largest state park featuring a theater, an equestrian center created for the 1984 Olympics, golf courses, tennis courts, hiking trails and other attractions .

Los Angeles Travel Tips - Is LA Public Transportation Safe for Tourist

Question and Answer on safe travel in Los Angeles. Also discuss best way to get to popular LA destinations.

Question and Answer about Los Angeles Public Transportation for Tourist and safe LA destinations to explore and the best way to get there

There are lots of questions concerning tourist using Los Angeles public transportation system.
In general, one of my most popular Los Angeles Travel Tip is to not use public transportation if you are a tourist in Los Angeles and especially if you are new to LA. Most locals do not use public transportation because of the poor ridership experience meaning they don't want to deal with loud people, loud music, disruptive drug dealers, disruptive passengers, inconsiderate passenger and homeless passengers who use the bus and metro rail system as a place to sleep or get away from the streets for a few hours, so they ride aimlessly on the LA Metro Bus and Rail system.

The other reason locals don't use LA public transportation even with so many things to do in Los Angeles, is most of the buses and rail system go through very bad neighborhoods. Example, the Metro Blue Line (light rail system that connects Long Beach and Downtown LA) travels through LA biggest slums like Watts and South Central. The connection terminal for Metro Rail Blue Line and Green Line is the Willowbrook/Rosa Parks Station in the heart of Watts. The station is lined with LA Sheriff. This is not the place for tourist, especially tourist new to LA. Its intimidating and if you don't know how to use the system or familiar with light rail stops/destinations, you will be dependent on asking someone, which is not a good idea at that station. That station atmosphere is fairly common throughout the Blue and Green Line Route as well as numerous bus routes.

Obviously there are better areas and routes on LA Metro but the bottom line, there are more stops in bad areas than good areas so I don't recommend LA public transportation for tourist. The exception is Metro Rail Line (Light rail system that connects Downtown LA to Hollywood Universal Studio) and Metro Gold Line (Light rail system that connects Downtown LA Union Station to Pasadena area). These Metro Rail systems are frequent by both locals and tourist and is relatively safe.

Metro Link (Metro Train System) which connects Los Angeles County to other counties such as Orange County, San a County, Antelope Valley and Ventura County are very safe and offer an excellent ridership experience for tourist.

My recommendation tip for tourists to see LA the fastest and safest way is to go to Hollywood Walk of Fame (tourist destination in itself - just off the Metro Red Line / Hollywood and Highland Station) and take the Starline Tour Hop on and Hop Off Bus to visit all the fun LA attractions and destinations. Bus run generally every 30 minutes and its safe and fun. You
don't have to deal with the LA traffic or expensive parking.
