Summer In South Greenland

South Greenland lives up to its name as it is truly a green land. Agriculture thrives here with many farms and luxuriant vegetables, in contrast to a barren ice world that covers much of Greenland.

How Iceland Grows So Many Vegetables

The backstory of Iceland's greenhouse farming culture.
Go checkout the full Iceland Road Trip Course:

How many tons of tomatoes per year do you think the Fridheimar farm produces?

When you look at Iceland you don’t immediately think about farming. Its cold, stark landscape may even look uninviting to the untrained eye. But Iceland has a wealth of natural resources in the form of underground heat, which they’ve used for a variety of purposes, most notably farming. And at the pinnacle of their farming endeavors are tomato greenhouses and greenhouse restaurants where you can enjoy a variety of specialty cuisine.

If you haven’t heard about the beauty of Icelandic greenhouses, take a moment to enjoy this snippet from Johnny’s course on Traveling Iceland.

Inneruulalik farm in Greenland

The beautiful Inneruulalik farm in south Greenland. There is a very nice guesthouse where you can spend a night and learn about life in Greenland from the family that owns the farm. My companion on my hikes is Nanu, an Icelandic dog that lives on the farm and loves to join guests on their explorations of the area.

Unesco Heritage Sites In Greenland

This is why Greenland is UNESCO World Heritage!

Just look at the two places Greenland proudly calls UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In North Greenland, the Ilulissat Icefjord is a sea full of ice as far as the eye can detect and a ground zero for seeing a changing climate. In South Greenland, the Kujataa Norse and Inuit Farming region is a vast network of small-scale sheep farms, modern-day towns and settlements, and well-preserved structures from the 10th century.

Southern Greenland: from Tasermiut fjord (Klosterdalen valley) to Aappilattoq settlement

In September 2017, we spent 12 days of hiking and packrafting in the unspoiled wilderness of southern Greenland between the magnificent Tasermiut fjord and the remote settlement of Aappilattoq, searching for beautiful landscapes, moods of solitude, and enjoying a true deep north adventure.

Certainly, we were far from being the first to cross these lands, however we hadn't met anyone during our 12-days hike across the pathless terrain; we just saw a few footsteps of previous adventurers in the sand.

No paths, no huts, no GSM signal, no means of civilization; this is a harsh northern landscape that requires enough stamina, experience, mental strength and patience to be crossed over. For those who don't retreat, however, the experience is very rewarding: a unique mix of isolation, exploration and adventure.

Our itinerary was as follows: Tasermiut fjord - Klosterdalen valley - Tupaassat valley - Kangikitsoq fjord - Qinnguadalen valley - Tasersuaq lake - Qingeq Kujalleq valley - Kangerluk fjord - Aappilattoq settlement.

It was tough. And beautiful.

Tasiusaq - Settlements of South Greenland

There is not much information and videos available about settlements in South Greenland, so we will be uploading drone footage from different settlements to show you what we have to offer!

We will start with Tasiusaq which is the only settlement in Tasermiut fjord.
Tasiusaq is located about 24 kilometers away from the entrance to the fjord, and is surrounded by beautiful mountains.

There are gravel roads connecting Tasiusaq to sheep farms in the fjord so you can easily hike to these places.

According to Statistics Greenland Tasiusaq has a population of 59 in 2020. Like other settlements in Greenland, the number of inhabitants has fallen steadily during the past few years

Since there are no roads connecting towns and settlements in Greenland, the only option to get to Tasiusaq is by boat or helicopter.

South Greenland

Packrafting trip south from Narsarsuaq to Aappilattoq and then to Nanortalik .
It took 30 days during witch we had all kind of weather from warm and sunny days to wet and cold; from lush green fields to amazing foliage colors and snow at higher altitudes.
