This is my travel story from Slovenia one of the smallest members of the European Union. This country is geographically located in the Balkan region of Europe. Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia and I stayed for a night in this small beautiful city but what happened when I didn't find a budget hostel in this city? I had to stay at a 4 star $200 USD per night room and then this country became a nightmare for me. watch the video for complete details.

Drive to Venice Italy from slovenia Eastern Europe road trip 2023

Embarking on a captivating road trip adventure in the spring of 2023, I set my sights on the enchanting city of Venice, Italy, from the picturesque landscapes of Eastern Europe, Slovenia. This journey promised a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural diversity, and historical richness.

My voyage began on a crisp morning in Slovenia, as I revved up the engine and embarked on an epic road trip across the heart of Eastern Europe. The route was a tapestry of winding roads that meandered through lush green valleys, past idyllic villages, and alongside pristine lakes. The verdant landscape of Slovenia unfurled before me, casting a spell with its emerald hills and tranquil rivers.

As I journeyed further into Eastern Europe, the scenery evolved, taking me through vast fields of sunflowers, rolling hills dotted with vineyards, and dense forests. Each twist and turn of the road revealed a new vista, a new adventure, and a new story to tell.

Crossing the border into Italy was a defining moment, as the landscape morphed into the timeless beauty of Veneto. The Dolomite mountains loomed on the horizon, their rugged peaks creating a dramatic backdrop. The enchanting drive continued, and I followed the meandering roadways as they wound through charming Italian villages, their cobbled streets and rustic architecture adding an authentic touch to the journey.

Finally, after a day of driving and exploring, I arrived at the incomparable Venice. The city rose before me like a dream from the sea, its intricate canals and historic buildings glistening in the late afternoon sun. I parked my vehicle and explored this unique, waterborne metropolis on foot, navigating its labyrinthine streets and crossing iconic bridges.

In Venice, I was treated to a sensory feast – the aroma of freshly baked pastries wafting from local bakeries, the melodic voices of gondoliers serenading tourists along the canals, and the enchanting sight of the sun setting over the Grand Canal. The city's rich history came alive as I visited famous landmarks like St. Mark's Basilica and the Rialto Bridge, all steeped in stories of the past.

My road trip to Venice, Italy, from Slovenia in 2023 was a testament to the beauty and diversity of Eastern Europe. It was a journey that unveiled the treasures of nature, culture, and history, and left me with cherished memories that will last a lifetime.

Road Trip Through Slovenia

We decided to nip through Slovenia on our Balkans road trip as it we'd seen some great photos of Lake Bled and some of the surrounding mountains.

Slovenia is a modern country which is far ahead in terms of economic development compared to most countries from the former Yugoslavia. Incidentally, they are the country which is closest to Europe (both geographically and politically) out of all the ex-Yugoslav countries.

We visited Ljubljana, Lake Bled and Vrsic Pass and we loved this country. Totally underrated and definitely worth a visit.

Lake Bled Slovenia ????????STUNNING Natural Beauty & GREAT FOOD - Ljubljana Day Trip -197 Countries 3 Kids

Join us as we visit Bled - one of the most picturesque spots in Slovenia.

Lying along the glacial Lake Bled and surrounded by the foothills of the Julian Alps, the town of Bled is an absolutely stunning Slovenian resort town. The lake has all of the ingredients for a perfect getaway including an 11th-century medieval castle, Blejski Grad, perched high on a precipice above the town.

We arrived to Bled from Ljubljana and stayed at a Home Exchange in the nearby village of Bohinjska Bistrica for the first few nights. Bohinjska Bistrica is located near the border of Italy, Austria and Slovenia is home to Lake Bohinj – the largest lake in the country. There is a postcard-worthy church and bell tower, at the head of the lake beside a beautiful stone bridge, dating back at least 700 years! In the area there are also numerous waterfalls and Triglav National Park, the gateway to the highest mountain in the country Mount Triglav at 2864m.

As we explored the region, it felt like we were in a miniature Switzerland surrounded by beautiful mountains, chalets overflowing with flowers, water fountains and more - at a quarter of the cost!

During our time in Bled, we stayed at a beautiful hotel in town called Penzion Berc. Here we also had an amazing dinner at their onsite restaurant called Finefood Berg.

Bled is the perfect sized town to explore on foot or by bike and there is a beautiful walkway around the entire lake. We enjoyed a delicious lunch at Grajska Plaza as we walked along the lakeside walkway. It had outdoor pools on the lake with water slides going right into the water!

We also discovered that we could take electronic bikes to visit the lake. It was the most fun and fastest way to take a tour. We absolutely loved the peace and quiet as no motor boats are allowed on the water. Along the lake we discovered a hotel named Vila Bled that was once the residence of Tito, the leader of Yugoslavia.

In the middle of the lake there is an enchanting island to visit. Atop this small island is the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Maria and some really good ice cream :-) We took a boat ourselves and had a small picnic in the middle of the lake.

We also visited the Bled Castle which has a tremendous view of the lake from the up above. The castle houses a museum, chapel and printing press!

Straza Bled was next on our list of places to visit in Bled and we are so glad we didn't miss it. Here we enjoyed an epic mountain coaster ride and later had a great meal at the Vegan Kitchen Restaurant.

Bled has many other outdoor attractions, including hiking trails, secluded swimming spots and in the winter, skiing and skating. We visited off season in October, which was a great time to discover the town with nice weather and less tourists.

I feel like Indiana Jones! I drive by a rented car to the south of Slovenia and visit the biggest tourist cave in Europe! Postojna Cave!

They even have a secret way into a big cave inside the mountain, where they could hide if the enemy came. Come with me and see for yourself, in BLED EPISODE 3!

BLED
is a town on Lake Bled in the Upper Carniolan region of northwestern Slovenia.
The town was first attested in written sources as Ueldes in 1004 (and as Veldes in 1011).The etymology of the name is unknown and it is believed to be of pre-Slavic origin.

Bled is located on the southern foot of the Karawanks mountain range near the border with Austria, about 50 km NW of the capital of Ljubljana.
The lake is 2.12 km long and 0.5 to 1 km wide.

In 1011, Henry II signed another deed of donation that added the castle and an area of land the size of thirty king's farms. That area, between the Sava Bohinjka and the Sava Dolinka, became known as the Lordship of Veldes. These donations marked a turning point in the history of Bled and for the following 800 years, the area remained under the sovereignty of the prince-bishops of Brixen.

Today's town began to form in the mid-19th century from the villages of Grad, Mlino, Rečica, Zagorice, and Želeče, which were encircling the lake. Bled was officially recognised as a town in 1960.

Naturopath Arnold Rikli (1823–1906) from Switzerland contributed significantly to the development of Bled as a health resort in the second half of the 19th century. Today it's an important convention centre and tourist resort, offering a wide range of sports activities. It's a starting point for mountain treks and hikes.

Perched on a rock overlooking the lake is the iconic Bled Castle.

POSTOJNA CAVE
is a 24,340 m long karst cave system near Postojna, southwestern Slovenia. It is the second-longest cave system in the country as well as one of its top tourism sites. The caves were created by the Pivka River. In 1819, Archduke Ferdinand visited the caves, this is when the caves became officially known as a tourist destination. Electric lighting was added in 1884, preceding even the capital Ljubljana and further enhancing the cave system's popularity.

In 1872, cave rails were laid along with first cave train for tourists. At first, these were pushed along by the guides themselves, later at the beginning of the 20th century a gas locomotive was introduced. During World War I, Russian prisoners of war were forced to construct a bridge across a large chasm inside the cave.

PREDJAMA CASTLE
Predjama Castle is a Renaissance castle built within a cave mouth in south-central Slovenia. It is located in the village of Predjama, apx 11 km from the town of Postojna and 9 km from Postojna Cave.
A mere few kilometres from Postojna Cave, the Karst world offers an unforgettable experience in the fairytale world of knights. The impregnable medieval marvel has been perched in the middle of a 123-metre-high cliff for more than 800 years. Behind the largest cave castle in the world, there is a network of secret tunnels, from where the knight Erazem of Predjama would set out on his plundering expeditions. The Cave under Predjama Castle is the home of a colony of bats.

The castle became known as the seat of the knight Erasmus of Lueg, lord of the castle in the 15th century and a renowned robber baron. A vertical natural shaft leads out of the original castle, and leads to the exit located at the top of the cliff, 25 m away from the cliff's edge. This shaft allowed them to secretly supply the castle with food in the time of the siege.
According to a popular but unfounded legend, Erasmus was betrayed by one of his men and was killed by a shot from a cannon in his lavatory.

Bled hosted the World Rowing Championships for the fourth time in history in 2011. (1966, 1979, and 1989.)
