Staying with this Amazigh family was a highlight of my time in Morocco. The Berbers - locally they prefer being referred to as the Amazigh people - are a North African community with their own culture and language: Tamazight. The family I stayed with isn't necessarily representative of the Amazigh community at large, but they are part of a sizeable community of people who live in the Atlas Mountains, far from the busy and vibrant cities of Morocco.

Thank you to:
→ Joao Leitao, a travel photographer who helped me find this lovely family. Check him out on InstagramL
→ Joao also runs a beautiful riad-style guesthouse in Ouarzazate, where I stayed for a night:

P.S. This video was filmed in January - pre-COVID-19 times!
P.S.2 Yes, everyone consented to being filmed, and yes, I made sure to contribute and reward them accordingly for their time and attention ????

Living 24 Hours with a Berbers Tribe (North Africa)

The Berbers are nomads, wandering through the dunes of the Sahara, all over North Africa. Common in Morocco, these nomadic people have a unique way of life. I join Eva Zubeck and we join a berber family for 24 hours.

This is my first encounter with Berbers, and I learned a lot... like how a goatskin is a great place to keep milk cool, and you can cook bread in sand. Yum, crunchy.

This is the second video in the Mauritania series. Let me know what was the most ineresting moment about our stay with the Berbers of North Africa, and make sure to watch the first episode. Iron Ore train Hopping!

VISITING A BERBER FAMILY HOME FOR TEA ON THE WAY TO OURIKA VALLEY FROM MARRAKESH.

We had a special day out from Marrakesh, Morocco today with Hassan from Morhara Morocco Tours. Our first stop was on the way to the Ourika Valley where we visited a traditional Berber family home and were able to experience inside the home and how they cook, eat, host people and live day to day.

Thank you to Hassan for a fantastic day tour which we can highly recommend as a must-do when visiting Marrakesh!

Moroccan People, Culture , Customs and Traditions

Morocco is a land with an expansive history of customs and traditions. The country is worldly renowned for its incredible hospitality and its impressive blend of cultures and religions. It is also a land of extraordinary contrasts and remarkable diversity. What could be more emblematic of Moroccan people, customs and cultural heritage than a traditional Moroccan wedding? Moroccan weddings are an elaborate affair that celebrates unity, love, happiness, and prosperity. It is a vibrant commemoration of sanctity and virtue that engages all five senses, through the colors, the music, the clothing, and the food.

Moroccan cuisine is worldly renowned for its intense and diverse flavors, colorful blends and artistic presentation, so naturally when it comes to weddings, the food is just that much more scrumptious and exceptional. Hosting an unforgettable feast entails opulent displays of splendor and sophisticated taste, and this translates to the clothing. People wear their most luxurious and extravagant frocks, with exquisite beaded caftans and fascinating sequined takshitas in vibrant colors.

Weddings aside, the variety in traditional Moroccan clothing is specific to each occasion, based on how casual or formal it is. Djellabas are the most relaxed form of traditional clothing, you can find people sporting while running for errands or while visiting family and friends. Whereas caftans and jabadors can be worn for religious holidays or engagement parties and takshitas are reserved for more formal settings.

Moroccan Cuisine
=============
With centuries of trade, conquest and immigration, Moroccan food preparation and consumption habits have been frequently shaped and reshaped. The region takes pride in its culinary scene with its exquisite flavors and tantalizing aromas. Geographic diversity and climate greatly allow for the cultivation of an impressive range of foods and ingredients.

Because of its strategic location, Morocco has been part of the spice trade route in the past. This marked a truly defining period in the history of North Africa and Morocco in particular. It also helped broaden the country’s culinary scope to incorporate new ingredients, herbs and spices that have now become a staple in Moroccan cuisine.

The rich history of Morocco, from the indigenous Berbers to the nomadic Arabs, the Phoenicians, and the Romans, is emulated in the gastronomy. Moroccan people may differ in terms of their ethnicity, religious beliefs, or political affiliation, but they do share an avid appreciation for food and cooking.

Understanding the food culture is a great way to see how people of different regions come together, share ideas and contribute to the creation of new dishes, meals, and cooking traditions. Tajine, Couscous, Pastilla, and Harira are testimony of regional influences combined with ancient cooking traditions.

A lot of Morocco’s staple dishes, lamb tajine with dried apricots or couscous with caramelized onions and raisins, for example, consist of blending sweet and savory flavors together, a tradition that goes back to Ancient Roman cuisine. When you try to dissect the history of any traditional Moroccan dish, you will find hints of Sicilian, Maltese, Greek, and Arab influences.

This makes it a bit challenging to pinpoint what belongs to whom. Nonetheless, whether it’s street food, a lavish restaurant or a homemade meal, you can expect unctuous dishes full of flavor and panache that will inevitably make you fall in love with the region and its cuisine.

Moroccan Music Scene
==================
The multi-ethnic background of Moroccan culture cannot be more evident than in the country’s musical landscape and dance forms. Despite the Western music scene’s heavy impact on contemporary Moroccan artists, there has been a recent yearning for more traditional and authentic Moroccan music.

This longing to revisit one’s history is encapsulated in the revival of Gnaoua, Berber, Rai, and Andalusian music through annual concerts and festivals dedicated to these ethnic genres. A lot of young musicians and artists have also contributed to this revival by performing covers of traditional songs using more modern-fitting rhythms and instruments to appeal to the youth.

Like a lot of customs and traditions, Moroccan music also varies depending on the geographic location of each region. Andalusian music, a mixture of Spanish and Arab influences, dates back to the 9th century. It’s considered to be Morocco’s classical music, and it’s generally played on special occasions and national celebrations like Eid.

Living with the Berber women of Morocco

An incredible experience hiking and living with the nomadic Berber women in the Atlas mountains of Morocco.
Sadly many of the women and young girls that we met were illiterate and drop out of primary school early as schools are hard to get to and teach in Arabic not their indigenous Berber language. With the men leaving for up to 11 months of the year to earn money, the women are left to take care of the home, family and livestock - an incredibly physically demanding task leaving me in no doubt that the Berber women are the strongest women I have met in my life. Thank you to Hafida Hdoubane Morocco’s first ever female guide for showing us this beautiful side of the world.

Making MOROCCAN BREAD and TAGINE with an AMAZIGH FAMILY ! ???????? Part 2

Welcome to the Dadès Gorges, a rugged and dry valley in Central Morocco. It is known for its fascinating Kasbahs, its local produce like figs, and incredible rock formations that dot the massive valley, making for an impressive hiking destination. But what is lesser known in Dadès Gorges are the Nomadic people of these mountains, what they eat and how they survive living off the land.

We are meeting up with our local friend Larsson Ezzaytouni from Dadès Valley Sightseeing ( and his family for an unforgettable experience through the Moroccan mountain-scape, where we will be meeting with real nomadic cave-dwellers for a traditional meal.

We are starting at Larsson’s family home and farm (Le Maison La Vallée des Figues). The Ezzaytouni family typically cooks with products that they produce on their property. This includes milk, eggs, butter, and fresh fruits like oranges. We enjoyed different flatbreads, donuts, jams, and other side dishes that are quintessential to breakfast in Dadès Valley.

Next, we begin the hike through Air Ouglif village and along the side of the gorges. The hike up reveals some insane rock formations caused by erosion; most notably the “Monkey Fingers” formations. Throughout, we picked ingredients like baby figs and wild oregano that will be used for lunch. About an hour later, we arrived at a cave-dwelling of a nomadic family.

This family welcomed us with tea and told us about their lifestyle, their cuisine, and the challenges that come with living in the mountains. The mother of the family cooked a fig and alfalfa leaf couscous for lunch. These ingredients are readily available throughout the valley, and couscous is a staple for nomads in Morocco because of its ease of carrying. Simple, but filling and very tasty. We had a great time meeting the families and want to thank them for their kind hospitality and a glimpse into their lives.

To finish the day after 22,000 steps we sat down for a FIG tagine at the beautiful Le Maison la Vallée des Figues! Super delicious of course and hearty before we went straight to bed!

If you want to experience Morocco like we did, make sure to visit with Moroccan Food Tour. This is our second tour across Morocco with them, and we HIGHLY recommend their tours & service.

The villages of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco are characterized by serving delicious and satisfying foods that reflect the culture and traditions of the local people. Village food in this region reflects the balance between ingredients available in the mountain environment and skills passed down through generations. The whistling language is a means of communication between the population in these isolated mountainous areas.

In village food in the Atlas Mountains, simple, natural ingredients combine to form delicious and nutritious meals. The diet is based on local and seasonal produce, such as grains, legumes, vegetables, meat and dairy products.

Living 5 Days with the BERBER TRIBE in Remote Morocco

In this Morocco Vlog, I take you with me on an epic adventure as I spend 5 days living with a Berber Tribe in Remote Morocco, close to the Algerian border. This isn’t your average Morocco Vlog, but an experience to understand the Berber people, a new culture, a new way of life, and to gain compassion and empathy for another group of people.

To start off my Morocco Vlog, and an authentic Moroccan experience in a remote corner of the country near the Sahara desert, I jump on a 10 hour bus ride from Marrakech Morocco to the small town of Tagounite, where I meet the Berber people for the first time. From Tagounite, the Berber Tribe takes me another 15 kilometers to their village. The village where this particular group of Berber people live is extremely remote, a handful of miles away from the Morocco Sahara Desert. The town is made entirely out of mud, straw, water, and soil. The living conditions are very basic, but sufficient. Around the Berber village are palm trees where tons of delicious Moroccan dates are grown.

During my time with this group of Berber people, I learned that there are several Berber Tribes all around North Africa and Morocco. The Berber people have their own language, traditions, dress, and food. During my time with the Berber Tribe, we ate variations of the famous Moroccan Tagine, but most of the Berber diet consisted of bread (lots of bread), potatoes, eggs, pasta, and small amounts of vegetables in a Tagine. The Berber people are traditionally known as a nomadic tribe that move around throughout the year to find land that is most suitable for their living conditions.

One of my original reasons for visiting this particular group of Berber people in remote Morocco was to learn how their home and village is constructed, which is made entirely out of MUD. However, because of the recent rain, we were unable to build mud bricks for their home, so I took a spontaneous overnight trip with my new Berber friends into the Sahara Desert in Morocco. Exploring the Moroccan Sahara Desert was an incredible experience, seeing the beauty and learning about another group of Berber People.

During my time with the Berber people, I learned that there is so much more to the beautiful country of Morocco than just the bustling cities and vibrant souks. I experienced the kindness of the Berbers of Morocco and learned about a completely different way of life than my own.
