Back to Madagascar - The Good, The Bad & The Beautiful

I flew from Toronto to Antananarivo via Kenya Airways. They now have a 12-13 hour direct flight direct from New York to Nairobi and it was full both times I have taken it. I was thinking to arrive in Nosy Be, but for whatever reason the flights were much more expensive. So I am in Antanarivo for 4 days to rest up, get some money changed, etc.

I have purchased a bus ticket to Tamatave and will go there tomorrow using Cotisse Transport. Cost of the bus trip was 45,000 Ariary (US$12) will and will take approximately 11 hours.

Madagascar: A Country Full Of Breathtaking Nature | Somewhere On Earth

Madagascar is one of the worlds largest islands, red from the colour of the earth, and full of tropical life. We meet Elysee a botany student with a fascination for her country’s national tree: the baobab. Soloda is a vaso, which is a group of nomadic coastal inhabitants who lives in an isolated village on the Mozambique channel. And Gil, a Frenchman has lived on the island for over 20 years, and has made his home in the foothills of the mountains working on reforesting the valley where he lives.

ANTANANARIVO: Madagascar Capital City Walk

Madagascar is an island nation, off the coast of southern Africa, in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. The capital city is known as Antananarivo. With a population of nearly 1.5 million residents, it suffers from many of the same endemic problems as other developing countries — namely traffic, air pollution, sanitation and crime.

Madagascar is often visited by foreign tourists, who are drawn by the natural beauty and wildlife of the magnificent Baobab trees. And the unique species of lemurs that reside here.

But few visitors will spend any time in Antananarivo, using it as an entry and exit point only. A simple wander around the streets here reveals the Malagasy people to be friendly, polite and unassuming. Their daily struggle to survive is readily apparent. As the English expression states, to understand a person you must 'walk a mile in their shoes.' So watch this video, and take a meandering walk through the crowded streets of Antananarivo. Familiarize yourself with this French influenced culture. And witness a very different way of life. #madagascar #antananarivo

Antsirabe, Madagascar Walking around Town

Story & Photos:

Some footage I recorded during an afternoon we spent exploring the city of Antsirabe, central Madagascar, on foot in 2023.

My travel stories:

Antsirabe stands as one of Madagascar's largest cities and is celebrated for its thermal springs and rickshaw culture. Located in the central highlands, it offers a cooler climate compared to other parts of the island, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking respite from the heat. The city's thermal springs have attracted visitors for therapeutic purposes for generations. Moreover, the prominence of rickshaws, locally known as pousse-pousse, as a primary mode of transportation, adds a distinctive cultural element to Antsirabe's urban fabric.

Antsirabe (Madagascar)

Antsirabe is a town in Madagascar, where the time stood still. The town is well known for the many colourful 'push-push' rikshaws (over 5000).

Madagascar / Sustainable rural living as a collaboration between locals and visitors

In Madagascar, the majority of the population lives in villages. For many Malagasy people, dealing with urban oriented occupations such as industry and services is not a relevant option. Raha, a young entrepreneur with an academic background in sociology, communication and tourism, offers a model for sustainable rural living based on a collaboration between locals and visitors. His model can create a fertile ground for enhancing rural life, close to earth and rich with culture and experiences.

His project is conducted in Imerikanjaka. A small community in the highlands, not far from Antananarivo, Madagascar’s capital. Not far, but feels far, like many places in unique Madagascar. The center of the project, called “The Domain”, consists of a central house, built in traditional building methods, and surrounded by agricultural land and many spots for contemplation. The house is built from mud using traditional building methods. It needs constant upgrade and care, and visitors can take part in that. Foreign visitors can assist in teaching and support local produce. In return they may gain a practical knowledge in permaculture, while enjoying a serene, pollution free environment.

This video summarizes my experience volunteering in the project’s early stages. I assisted Raha and his local workers Mand and Leka building with mud, and had initial interactions with people in the village, learning about their life and their needs. I also had time to roam around and immerse myself in the rural atmosphere. The hills above the villages and the domain provide a magnificent view to the enchanting agricultural areas and the reddish houses built from bricks made from the local red soil. The area is also reach with history, and remains of fortifications can be seen around. The natural elements also serve as places for worship.

For me this was an inspiring experience, especially since for quite a while I’ve been thinking about cities versus villages. I have a feeling that the world is obsessed with cities, but many people do not find the opportunities they chase in the urban realm. Raha’s project and the time I spent in the highlands convinced me that turning village life into a model for desired living is achievable. Such a project has a potential to draw new types of foreign visitors, not just wealthy tourists, thus reducing the tension between Caucasian visitors and locals, which is typical to tourism in Africa.

Best of Madagascar highlands unfold during a fabulous bike trip west of Antsirabe. The trip includes a visit to Andraikiba lake and Tritriva volcanic lake, as well as tranquil villages and across agricultural plots on terraces and valleys.
