Little Corn Island | A week on a tiny Caribbean island in Nicaragua

#CornIslands #LittleCornIsland #CaribbeanIsland

Little Corn Island is the smaller of the Corn Islands, 50 miles off the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. It's an idyllic Caribbean island with crystal clear water which makes it very popular for scuba diving.

After flying from Managua to Bluefields and then to Big Corn Island, we then took a 30 minute boat (known as a Panga) to Little Corn. With no cars or roads, you have to get around the traditional way....walking. Lots of the hotels/hostels will help carry your bags (in wheelbarrows) to wherever you need to go, although bear in mind that most places are within 20-30 minutes walk of the dock.

We spent just under a week on Little Corn Islands, staying mainly at Little Corn Bed and Breakfast ( which was around $90 USD per night. However, there is a wide range of options. We were offered a room for $7 USD a night, and also stayed one night a Carlito's place which is more of a beach shack but still perfectly comfortable for $25 USD per night. The expensive place that we tried to get a room at when we first arrived can be up to $300 USD per night but honestly, it didn't seem worth it.

It's a quiet, sleepy island where most people are either relaxing on the beach, swimming, snorkelling scuba diving or fishing. There was quite a lot of seaweed floating in the water and washing up on the beach, but Little Corn B&B did a good job of cleaning it up. Plus it's only close to the shore so when you take the boat out to the reef to go snorkelling, the water is crystal clear.

Here's a few travel tips if you're visiting Little Corn:

- There are no ATMs on the island so make sure you take cash out before you fly or get cash out on Big Corn

- There is no electricity on Little Corn between 6am and 1pm so make sure you charge your stuff over night or bring a power bank

- The two restaurants that we usually ate at were really good: Tranquilo Cafe and Lobster Inn, both of which are near the dock on the West side of Little Corn Island

You Wouldn’t Believe This is Nicaragua (Big Corn Island Tour)

In this Nicaragua Travel Vlog I take you to the best place to visit in Central America for a Big Corn Island Tour. The Corn Islands are two secret Nicaraguan islands located in the middle of the Caribbean sea. Big Corn Island and Little Corn Island are no doubt, the best place to visit in Nicaragua and are truly a Nicaraguan paradise. Big Corn Island is home to a unique cultural where the locals typically speak Spanish, Creole, and English and eat a ton of delicious seafood and coconut infused dishes.

In this Big Corn Island Tour I take you around the island on my scooter, showing you all the best things to do on Big Corn Island. To start off my tour of Big Corn Island Nicaragua I climb for amazing views of the Caribbean sea. After getting back on my scooter, I ended up stumbling upon an abandoned home with incredible views of the Caribbean and tall palm trees. After some delicious food for lunch and dinner, I eventually make my way over to Arenas Beach Hotel and Arenas Beach, which is home to the best beach on the island with soft white sand and turquoise blue water. This beach is perfect for swimming and relaxing, and is even home to some great snorkeling if you walk further down the beach. I end my time on Big Corn Island with the famous island dish called Rundown, which is a delicious coconut seafood stew.

I hope that after watching my Big Corn Island Vlog you can now see why the Corn Islands are the best place to visit in Nicaragua!

Big Corn Island & Travel Tips for Corn Islands, Nicaragua

#CornIslands #BigCornIsland #CarribeanNicaragua

After spending a week on Little Corn Island we took the 30 minute panga (shuttle boat) to Big Corn Island where we had 2 days at Paraiso Hostel before flying back to Managua.

The Corn Islands are renowned for scuba diving and snorkelling with the chance to see nurse sharks, eagle rays and a whole variety of fish and corals. Also, right next to Paraiso hostel and near the dock are two shipwrecks around 100m from shore so try to check them out if you're in the area. If you're feeling more adventurous there is an older shipwreck to the North of the island where you can see the cannons buried in the sand - we didn't manage to make it there but were told about it.

We also rented bikes for $2 an hour and rode around Big Corn Island. It's a gentle ride with very little traffic and I would highly recommend that you do it. Stop off at a beachside restaurant for lunch!

In terms of travel tips for the Corn Islands:

- We booked our flight through Paraiso for $180 US dollars which included 2 nights at the hostel. We used these at the end of our trip because we got the boat to Little Corn as soon as we landed. It also meant that we could just get up and fly out in the morning instead of having to get the boat and then the plane.

- Taxis from the airport to the port (and to hostels) are at a fixed rate of $1

- There's no ATM on Little Corn Island so you need to bring cash from Big Corn or Managua. A lot of the places charge a large fee to use card.

- We were paying around $90 a night at Little Corn Bed & Breakfast but you can also stay in the beach shacks (like Grace's Cool Place or Carlito's place) for $25 a night.

- A week is enough on the Corn Islands, unless you intend on doing more scuba diving. There isn't a whole lot there....which is sort of the whole point of going. It's a beautiful Caribbean paradise where you just relax.

Who are Kara and Nate?!
Watch our documentary here:

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married 2013 and were super “normal.” I was a teacher and Nate started a small printing business from the spare bedroom of our apartment.

We discovered the world of “travel hacking” while planning our honeymoon & became addicted ;)

So after 2 years of obsessively saving $35k and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016 for a “one year” trip around the world.

Our goal was to see as many places as possible before we ran out of money and went back home to “normal life.” We started this travel vlog to share our experiences with friends and family, but quickly fell in love with living on the road and found a new passion for capturing our travels through video. So we did everything we could to keep going.

4 years later, we achieved our new goal of visiting 100 countries and all 7 continents. We had no plans to slow down, until 2020 forced us to ;) Which is when we bought a converted van to start exploring our own country for the first time.

After ~2 years of van life, we are back to full time traveling! And now we are finding the best adventures the world has to offer :)

We are incredibly grateful to be able to continue doing something we love every day. ???????????? Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey!

This PRIVATE ISLAND is in Nicaragua??!! Our Calala Island Travel Vlog

We explored an exclusive PRIVATE ISLAND hideaway in the undiscovered Caribbean of Nicaragua in this travel vlog.

Calala Island is ultra all-inclusive. The average cost per night is $2,300 and includes everything from transportation to the island (from Managua, Nicaragua), accommodations in one of 4 suites, meals, adult beverages, and activities. If you are up for an adventure to make the trek to the island, we highly recommend it.

Getting to Calala Island was an adventure - it included an international flight, a domestic flight, taxi rides, and a traditional open-top speed boat.

This was our last international trip together as Josh is now in heaven. We visited and filmed this video in January 2021. I am so thankful that we were able to experience this private island together. Josh was an amazing human and had a podcast to help people overcome life's challenges. Nicaragua Travel Guide | Itinerary, Mistakes & Tips

#Nicaragua #TravelGuide #NicaraguaTravel

After 2 months travelling around Nicaragua and visiting most of the well-known places, I thought it would be useful to produce a travel guide of sorts for Nicaragua.

Places visited: San Juan Del Sur, Popoyo, Playa Colorados, Ometepe, Granada, Managua, Corn Islands and Leon.

If I had to choose two places to visit in Nicaragua they would be Granada and Corn Islands (followed closely by Popoyo and Ometepe). Granada is a lovely town but the real jewel is visiting Laguna de Apoyo and Masaya Volcano which is one hell of a day. Corn Islands is, well, a Caribbean paradise and a place to really relax amongst beautiful surroundings.

If I had to skip two places they would have to be San Juan Del Sur and Leon, although both places are still good to visit if you have the time! The reason for skipping these two are that San Juan Del Sur needs the tourists for attractions like Sunday Funday to work - obviously at the moment there are a limited amount of tourists. Leon is nice but the main tourist attraction is the cathedral which, whilst incredible and the roof makes for incredible pictures, it's a bit out of the way and doesn't offer a whole lot else.

Nicaragua is incredibly diverse which makes it great for travelling - it's also much cheaper than Costa Rica. To give you an idea we spent less than a third on a monthly basis compared to our expenses in Costa Rica.

There are a few things that I think all travellers should be aware of:

1. Internet speeds are on the whole terrible. If you buy a local sim it is far more stable but generally speaking, the wifi isn't reliable enough to work off. As such, if you're a digital nomad or looking to work remotely in Nicaragua I think that you'll struggle....or at least I did.

2. Taxis are really affordable both in cities and between towns. However, for some reason even if you have a map with you they seemingly refuse to use it (even if they don't know where you are staying). This was perplexing and frustrating. Also, always clarify pricing. We got stung a few times because we didn't fully clarify prices or the taxi waited for us when we hadn't asked them to.

3. We had some issues crossing the Nicaraguan border back to Costa Rica because the stamp was barely readable from he Nicaragua border. This is highly unlikely to happen to anyone else, but for us it did mean that the bus left without us at Peñas Blancas.

4. I can't really comment on the political situation in Nicaragua but it is something that people ask about. Do your own research here as I had to previously change travel plans due to unrest.

HISTORY OF OMETEPE ISLAND | & the Pirates of Lake Nicaragua (8 Minutes)

Get ready to go back in time, with real photos and narration, we show you the history of Ometepe Island, and the pirates that plundered Lake Nicaragua. We start at the petroglyphs and findings from 2000 BC, then fast forward to the 16th century, when pirates such as Henry Morgan, sailed up the San Juan River and captured the city of Granada. Then to the battle at the Fortress of the Immaculate Conception, and later to the 19th century where William Walker took over Nicaragua and claimed himself president.
