Costa Rica: A Look at Life in San Jose - International Living

A Look at Life in San Jose, Costa Rica - International Living

I have a pretty standard morning routine. I'm awakened very early by roosters but stay in bed for a while as the sunrise filters into the bedroom. I start the coffee, open the sliding doors, step out to my deck, and look down into the valley below. I usually see hummingbirds buzzing around my flowers, sometimes a blue-crowned mot-mot. Some mornings one of my neighbors, a farmer, has been up even earlier to let his cow and oxen graze in the vacant lot next door. I'm not out in the country or living on a farm. I'm in the middle of the largest urban area in Costa Rica, the capital, San Jose, founded in 1738.

San Jose, Costa Rica: Sightseeing + Thinking about White Privilege and Identity

Our first full day in Costa Rica! Today Jesse and Harper stayed at the apartment to play on the playground and in the pool while I went to downtown San Jose to explore, see the sights, visit museums, and sip cold coconut water straight from the coconut. (Aaaahhhh.) During a visit to the national history museum (Museo Nacional de Costa Rica), I thought about what it's like for me--a white US citizen--to be living in Latin America, a place where my European ancestors did terrible things.

👋🏼 About me: Hi, I’m Erin! I live with my husband Jesse and our three-year-old daughter Harper in Guanajuato, GTO, Mexico. In the summer of 2018, we sold our stuff, packed our bags, and booked a one-way ticket to Mexico in search of a new life. Thanks for joining our adventure!

San Jose Costa Rica Vacation Travel Guide | 90+ Countries with 3 Kids

Welcome to San José, the vibrant capital and largest city of Costa Rica!

If you are looking for a combination of cosmopolitan urban center on the one hand, and traditional Central American city on the other, you will definitely love San José. Costa Rica’s capital is relatively young since it wasn’t established until 1738. That was the moment when Spanish authorities decided they should collect their indigenous people into one locale.

The city didn’t grow that quickly, in the early 1800s, San José was still just the size of an average village, but today it is home to more than a third of Costa Rica’s population. About 2.15 million people live here.

If you are planning on visiting Costa Rica and its colorful capital, you should have in mind that the temperatures here are tropical. 30 degrees C is something that could happen during any month of the year, but the daily mean is around 22-23 degrees C all-year-round. Rainy season starts in May and ends in October. The wettest month is September, the hottest one is April, while the coldest one is October, but those differences are barely noticeable.

Enjoy the video!!!

Quick Tour of San Jose Costa Rica!

Really fun city and I definitely enjoyed my pinto gallo!

Here's all the tips and advice I have for solo and group travelers visiting San Jose, Costa Rica.

How to get to San Jose from the SJO airport in Alajuela 1:15
Exchange your currency to Colones: 2:00
How to get around/public transportation: 3:31
Addresses/navigation/directions: 4:18
Things to do: 4:30
Beaches: 5:16
Weather/Rainy Season: 5:59

Things I forgot to mention:

Costa Rica is pretty expensive. All the prices I paid shopping/eating/etc was basically equal to the cost of living in Chicago. For example, my average meal was $15-20.

The sun rises and sets very early here. It's sunny at 6:30 am and dark by 7. The streets were practically empty by then, and nightlife really doesn't get started until after 9.
