Liberian National Museum in Monrovia, Liberia

The National Museum of Liberia is a national museum in Monrovia, Liberia. Initially housed in the First Executive Mansion on Ashmun Street of the city which is now used as a library, it was established by an Act of the National Legislature in 1958 under the administration of Liberia's 18th President, Dr William V.S. Tubman. Partly funded by UNESCO, in coordination with the Department of Public instructions (what is now the Liberian Ministry of Education), its primary goal was to obtain, preserve and display cultural artefacts and other historical items which depict the country's heritage.
The museum is classified in three tiers, where on the ground floor there is a histographical gallery containing presidential papers, private documents and memoirs of past important executives of the Liberian government and photographs and cartographical resources related to its culture. On display is the nation's first flag dating back to August 1847. There are also other items ranging from postage stamps to an editorial page of Liberia's daily newspaper, the Liberia Herald. Other items include traditional Liberian household furniture and utensils, and there is a craft shop run by the African Arts & Crafts Inc.

On the next floor is the Ethnographical Gallery and on the top floor the contemporary arts gallery which illustrates Liberian artistic works many of which are product of a contract between the museum and art institutions and art colleges throughout the country where artists are commissioned to produce for the museum purposes.

Other museum facilities include a portable video system, editing and archival materials, cassette recordings and slides of visual and oral arts many of which offer an insight into Liberian cultures such as dance and the use of masks in the country.

Liberian National Museum, vlog July 2022

A nice visit to Liberias National Museum. I spent about two hours there on a guided tour. I'm happy I opted for the guided tour bc there were artifacts in there that I didn't want to be alone with, so it was comforting that someone else was there explaining things.

There's no picture taking in the museum, but for a price they might allow it.

There's apparently an admission fee of $5USD... but the admission went to the the tour guide and not in the donation box. the tour guide price was also donation.

the sign in book mainly had people visiting from the US. Many locals did not know there was a museum was in town or have paid a visit.

Visiting historical sites in Monrovia, Liberia

I go to the Ducor hotel, the monument to Liberia's first president, Joseph Roberts, Providence island, where former American slaves first landed in their boat called the Mayflower. Then on to the national museum which is housed in the countries old legislature building and Providence Baptist church, the oldest public building in Monrovia and the site of Liberia's declaration of independence signing in 1847.

Discover LIBERIA: Established as a Haven for Free Black Slaves from the US | 10 INTERESTING FACTS

Liberia's founding is a remarkable chapter in African and American history. It was established in the early 19th century as a haven for free African Americans and liberated slaves from the United States who sought a new life away from the horrors of slavery and the racial discrimination prevailing in America at the time.

The American Colonization Society, formed in 1816, played a pivotal role in the country's founding. They purchased land on the West African coast and named it Liberia, which means Land of Freedom. In 1822, the first settlers arrived and established a settlement at Cape Mesurado, which later became Monrovia, the capital.

The founding of Liberia, however, was not without its controversies and complexities, including conflicts with indigenous peoples and the imposition of American customs and governance on African soil. Despite its complex history, Liberia stands as a symbol of resilience and determination for those who sought freedom and self-determination.

Liberia holds a unique and pioneering status in African history as the first African republic. Its founding in the 19th century is a testament to the complex interplay of colonialism, the African diaspora, and the pursuit of self-determination.

On July 26, 1847, Liberia declared its independence, becoming Africa's inaugural self-proclaimed republic. This momentous event represented a bold assertion of sovereignty and autonomy, setting a precedent for other African nations in their struggles for independence from colonial powers.

Liberia's history as the first African republic is both remarkable and complex, characterized by the resilience and determination of its founding citizens. Over time, Liberia has navigated significant challenges, including periods of political instability and civil conflict. Nevertheless, its legacy as Africa's pioneer republic remains a symbol of the continent's quest for self-rule and self-determination.

Monrovia, the vibrant capital city of Liberia, is a place of historical significance and cultural diversity. Founded in the 19th century by free African Americans and liberated slaves from the United States, it was named in honor of President James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, who was a supporter of the colonization movement.

Monrovia is characterized by a mix of American and African influences, with a unique atmosphere. The city is known for its lively markets, bustling streets, and a colorful waterfront. The Providence Island, located just off the coast, is a historical site where the first settlers established themselves.

Visitors can explore the National Museum, which holds artifacts and exhibits showcasing Liberia's history and culture. The city is also home to a diverse culinary scene, where traditional Liberian dishes like jollof rice and fufu can be savored. Monrovia, like the country it serves as the capital for, is a place where history, culture, and resilience converge.
