LENÇOIS MARANHENSES, BRAZIL: A DESERT with a THOUSAND LAGOONS - ALL sights
Lençois Maranhenses is a bizarre natural wonder in the north of Brazil. Nowhere else in the world you can find a desert-like landscape like this combined with a thousand of blue lagoons in half moon shapes. The ecosystem of the National Park of Lençois Maranhenses is quite unique and the falling rain creates a natural swimming paradise during and after the rain season. We hop on a 4x4 to make several adventurous trips to Lagoa Azul, Lagoa Bonito, the beautiful sunset, the beach and the fishermen's town of Atins. We dine at the world famous Sr. Antonio's to try their delicious grilled shrimp.
We visit Brazill during a year long trip around the world and we might even keep traveling indefinitely. On new year's we started on Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. After that you saw us in Oman, Cape Verde, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Tobago, Grenada, the Bahamas, the United States, Mexico, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. Lencois Maranhenses National Park is located in the state of Maranhao in the northeastern part of Brazil. Formed over thousands of years ago, these white sand dunes cover a vast 338,000 acres. The landscape is constantly changing due to the winds. The valleys of the dunes fill with freshwater from the rainy season typically January - June. The lagoons do not drain due to the impermeable rock beneath the sandy surface. We spent three days exploring! Come along as we explore this breathtaking national park!

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is a national park located in Maranhão state in northeastern Brazil, just east of the Baía de São José. Protected on June 2, 1981, the 155,000 ha (380,000-acre) park includes 70 km (43 mi) of coastline, and an interior composed of rolling sand dunes. During the rainy season, the valleys among the dunes fill with freshwater lagoons, prevented from draining due to the impermeable rock beneath. The park is home to a range of species, including four listed as endangered, and has become a popular destination for ecotourists.
The lagoons in the park are often interconnected with one another, as well as with the rivers that run through the area. They are home to a number of fish and insect species, including the wolf fish, which burrows down into wet layers of mud and remains dormant during the dry season. Besides the dunes that form the centerpiece of the park, the ecosystem also includes area of restinga and mangrove ecosystems.
The park is home to four species listed on the Brazilian List of Endangered Species, the scarlet ibis (Eudocimus ruber), the neotropical otter (Lontra longicaudis), the oncilla (Leopardus tigrinus) and the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus). The park also includes 133 species of plants, 112 species of birds, and at least 42 species of reptiles.

Lencois Maranhenses National Park, Crystal clear water between the Dunes
Jewels in the Brazilian crown, those infinite sand dunes scattered with crystal clear water lagoons, at some 6 miles from São Luís, are located in The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, Maranhão state in northeastern Brazil. These sheets consist of a desert about 63 mile long and 32 mile wide, alongside the Atlantic to the North, and surrounded by tropical forests to the South. Seen from the sky, the scenery of a rare beauty, the dunes are molded by the wind and the trapped tropical rains have created immense pools of fresh, green and blue waters.
It is an area of low, flat, occasionally flooded land, overlaid with large, discrete sand dunes. It encompasses roughly 1,500 km2, and despite abundant rain, supports almost no vegetation. The area became a National Park on June 2, 1981. Composed of large, white, sweeping dunes, at first glance Lençóis Maranhenses looks like an archetypal desert, but in fact it is not an actual desert. Lying just outside the Amazon Basin, the region is subject to a regular rain season during the beginning of the year. This desert is the amount of rain the drops over the dunes, creating ponds of crystal clear water on the depression between dunes. Despite its desert-like appearance, Lençóis Maranhenses records an annual rainfall of 62.9 inches, 300 times more than in the Saara. The rains cause a peculiar phenomenon: fresh water collects in the valleys between sand dunes and is prevented from percolating down by a laeyer of impermeable rock which lies underneath the sand. The resulting blue, green and black lagoons are surrounded by the desert-like sand, and reach their fullest between July and September. During the period of drought, the lagoons evaporates and become completely dried. After the rainy season, the lagoons are home of many species of fishes, turtles and clams. The mystery in this story lies in the fact that when the lagoons fill up, life comes back, as if they had never left the place. One of the hypotheses to explain the phenomenon is that the eggs of the fish and crabs are maintained alive in the sand, exploding when rain come back.
