Liechtenstein Travel Guide

Liechtenstein is the sixth smallest country in the world (roughly the size of Washington, D.C.). It has a historic castle, bustling downtown, vineyard, and some of the most memorable hiking in the Alps. Vaduz is the nation’s capital and where you will most likely start your Liechtenstein adventure. It’s the starting point for the Via Alpina ( and where you can get your passport stamped (at the Tourism Office). For the best hiking, you’ll head to the charming resort town of Malbun. Don’t forget to try the national dish of Käsknöpfle!

LIECHTENSTEIN, IS IT WORTH A VISIT? - Vlog #21

Remember my travel bucketlist video from last year? I mentioned in total 6 countries in it which I want to visit as soon as possible. Israel is already done in February 2020 and because of the whole Covid-19 thing going on and me not going anywhere this summer on a proper holiday, I decided to visit Liechtenstein, as it is the closest country out of all and it can be easily visited from my place. Also it is the only country from all the neighbouring countries I have never visited at all, so it is indeed something special. Do you want to see how much I enjoyed the country and what kind of stuff you can see and do there? Check the video out!

One of Europe's smallest countries - The beautiful Liechtenstein (Vaduz city)

Liechtenstein is the sixth smallest country in the world and it is located between Austria and Switzerland, with the size of only 162 square kilometers. The country is located in the Upper Rhine Valley in the European Alps and is one of the only 2 doubly landlocked countries in the world. It is Europe's last absolute monarchy/principality, and its monarchs are the richest royals in Europe. The Capital of the country is Vaduz with only around 5400 people. One interesting fact about this country is that there are more registered companies and jobs than there are people. This means that the country is very rich and has the most exports per capita per person. They use Swiss Franc as their currency and they speak German language but with a certain dialect. Liechtenstein has no airport so the best way to go there is through Austria or Switzerland by train or car. It is a perfect side trip when you are already near the boarder of these 2 countries.

Tip: You can have your passport stamped at the Toursim/ post office in Vaduz for around 3 euros.

Vaduz, Liechtenstein in 3 minutes - Travel Cubed [4K]

Vaduz - is the capital of Liechtenstein and also the seat of the national parliament. The city, which is located along the Rhine River, has 5,696 residents. The most prominent landmark of Vaduz is Vaduz Castle, being perched atop a steep hill in the middle of the city. It is home to the reigning Prince of Liechtenstein and the Liechtenstein princely family. The city's distinctive architecture is also displayed in landmarks such as the Cathedral of St. Florin, Government House, City Hall, the National Art Gallery, as well as the National Museum. Although Vaduz is the best-known town in the principality internationally, it is not the largest; neighboring Schaan has a larger population.

Solo Indian Girl Takes Liechtenstein City Tour While Staying with a German (Couchsurfing)

Did you know Liechtenstein has only 30,000 residents and is 4th smallest European country.? Liechtenstein doesn’t offer visa to tourists and can be visited on a Schengen Multiple Entry Visa. It shares borders with Switzerland and Austria and can be reached from either of those countries via bus.

Vaduz is the capital of the country and the place where you will find most museums and attractions. Apart from Vaduz, a few places to visit in Liechtenstein are Malbun, Triessenberg, Balzers, and Steg.

If you are planning a visit to this amazing country, then here are a few things to help you out:

???? Currency Used

They use Swiss Francs, similar to Switzerland, and most places accept Visa card. However, for buses, you need to carry sufficient cash as they don’t accept a card.

One of the best ways to travel and explore Liechtenstein is by taking the Adventure Pass that gives you unlimited bus rides in a day.

???? How to Reach Malbun and What to Do Here

➡️ How to Reach

To reach Malbun, you need to reach Vaduz Post bus station. How you reach Vaduz Post depends on where you are starting from.

If you are staying around Haag side, then you can get a bus from Bendern Post bus stop. For those staying near Buchs area, there is a direct bus to Vaduz.

Once you have reached Vaduz, you can take bus route number 21 to reach Malbun, Steg, or Triesenberg. The cost of this trip is 6.40 Swiss Francs (500 INR) for one side. It would be better to take a return ticket or a day pass that costs 12 Swiss Francs (960 INR).

The bus ride from Vaduz to Malbun is 30 minutes long and filled with gorgeous mountain views.

⛷ What to Do in Malbun

Malbun is a ski resort town in Liechtenstein and offers stunning views of mountains. You can choose to take the chair lift, hike around the town, go on long hikes, or simply enjoy the view here.

There are a couple of restaurants also available here where you can eat a meal priced around 9 Swiss Francs (720 INR).

???? How to Reach Steg and What to Do Here

If you have the day pass, then you can take a bus to Steg from Malbun and it will take you just 15 minutes to reach. If you don’t have the day pass, then you can choose to walk to Steg as it is only 2.5 km from Malbun.

Steg is a tiny village with not many options. The main attraction here is the Steg Staussee lake which is a popular fishing and swimming spot. You can spend a couple of hours beside this lake and can hike around the valley.

From Steg, you can take a bus back to Vaduz for 6.40 Swiss Francs and then head back to Switzerland.

???????? ???????? Switzerland and Liechtenstein Border Control

There is no border control between these two countries so no one will check your passport at any time. The border is actually the Rhine River for these two countries.

Note: Liechtenstein doesn’t give any kind of visa so if you wish to visit. Apply for a Schengen Multiple Entry Visa.

???? Trying German Raclette

One of the most amazing dishes to try in Switzerland is a Raclette and since I was staying with a German host in Haag, Switzerland, I had the opportunity to try the German version of it.

It’s basically cheese poured over veggies, meat, bread anything. Raclette cheese is available in the supermarket which you can buy but you need to have the Raclette pan to make it.

It is a delicious dish and as a cheese lover, I absolutely loved it!!! So grateful that Jonas introduced me to this Swiss German delicacy. ????????????
