Original Red Dirt Shirts - KVIC-TV3 [Made on Kauai]

Welcome to Paradise Sportswear, where we take pride in being the original red dirt t-shirt company right here in beautiful Kauai. I'm Tina, the manager, and I'm excited to share our incredible journey with you.

Back in 1992, Kauai faced a devastating hurricane, leaving our entire area in ruins, including our factory where we used to screen t-shirts. Instead of giving up, our owner decided to persevere and created a unique concept – dirt shirts. These shirts became a symbol of resilience, proudly declaring, I survived the hurricane.

Our process starts with a plain white shirt, which we then wash and dye with a mixture of soil and water, enriched with vinegar. The secret ingredient is the iron oxide in the soil, which gives the shirts their rich, earthy colors. Amazingly, a single gallon of soil can dye up to 500 shirts, making each one truly special.

What sets our shirts apart is their texture; the coarse dyeing process gives them a gritty feel, with traces of actual soil still embedded. It's a unique touch that makes each shirt a piece of Kauai to take home.

Once dyed, our shirts are taken to the screenhouse, where we offer a variety of designs – 30 for retail and 40 for wholesale. From start to finish, it takes just a day to create these special shirts, and by day's end, they're ready for retail stores.

Each shirt isn't just a colored garment with a design; it's a labor of love and hard work. They hold the essence of Kauai and are sure to bring back cherished memories when you wear them.

You can find our red dirt stores in various locations – one in Lihue, Kauai, conveniently located near the airport road exit. We also have stores in Maui and Oahu. And if you're ever on Kauai, don't forget to visit us in Port Allen, Ele Ele, where it all began.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about our unique red dirt shirts and the story behind them. We hope you'll come and visit us to experience these special pieces of Kauai for yourself. Be sure to like, share, and subscribe for more stories and updates from Paradise Sportswear. We appreciate your support!

Discovery Channel: How Booze Built America

A three part mini series called How Booze Built America will air Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012 at 10/9c on the Discovery Channel and features scenes and interviews from Short Mountain Distillery. It's hosted by Mike Rowe of the popular series Dirty Jobs.

Several local Civil War reenactors from the Armies of Tennessee and Dr. Kristofer Ray of APSU will also help add some historic context to the story.

Short Mountain Distillery was the site of a full day of filming back in June. Our upcoming release of Short Mountain Apple Pie Moonshine may or may not make an appearance, but the effects will. Mike sat with our three living legends of moonshine at the end of a long day of filming and made sure close to a gallon of it got gone.

Florida Travel: How to Visit the Worm Gruntin' Festival, Sopchoppy

That age-old idiom about the early bird getting the worm is a way of life for earthworm harvester Gary Revell. Revell and his wife spend their mornings making “music”, which sounds like grunting, to coax thousands of earthworms from the dirt.

In celebration of this unusual feat, the small community of Sopchoppy hosts an annual Worm Gruntin' Festival. The festival includes a 5K run, live worm gruntin’ demo, the crowning of the Earthworm King and Queen, the Wakulla County Horseshoe Championship, live music and art vendors.
