Lava Enters the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii

Lava finally reaches the Pacific Ocean at Kamokuna after a seven mile journey from the Pu'u O'o vent in Kilauea Volcano.

A small black sand beach is formed when the surf quenches the hot lava.

Recorded March 27, 2005

Molten Lava Flowing into the Pacific Ocean on Hawaii

December 11, 2012 Kilauea Volcano Lava flow from Pu'u 'O'o entering the water 7 miles down the Pali. The lava started entering the Pacific Ocean again on November 24th 2012 at about 1pm the same day and time we landed on Kauai.
On Dec 10 I flew over to the Big Island and drove over to Kaimu Beach Park where I hiked out to the newly formed Ocean Entry sight about 4 miles west. I used the harder to follow Ocean side trail to stay off the private land just north of this path that the local tour groups use. I stayed on or near the new hot lava until Dec 12 then flew back over to Kauai to join my wife until our departure for Houston on 12-16-12.

Kilauea is the youngest and southeastern most volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. Topographically Kilauea appears as only a bulge on the southeastern flank of Mauna Loa, and so for many years Kilauea was thought to be a mere satellite of its giant neighbor, not a separate volcano. However, research over the past few decades shows clearly that Kilauea has its own magma-plumbing system, extending to the surface from more than 60 km deep in the earth.

Hawaiian Meaning

The Hawaiian name Kilauea means spewing or much spreading, apparently in reference to the lava flows that it erupts. Eruptions have been Continuous since January 3, 1983. It is estimated that the first eruption of Kilauea has between 300,000 and 600,000 years ago.

Lava entering the Pacific Ocean, from the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii, in Volcanoes National Park. It is the East Lae'apuki entry point of the PKK lava flow. This volcano has been erupting since 1983, and this lava flow has been active since 2004.

Hawaii and other island volcanoesare in a constant competition for the freshest, newest rock around. When the lava meets the sea, it cools quickly while boiling the ocean into steam. This results in a distinctive texture: the quenching produces a glassy outer surface from the lava cooling too quickly for crystal structure to grow. This insulates the inside of the globs, trapping any dissolved gas as bubbles and allowing internal microcrystal growth from the slightly slower cooling rate.

January 2013 on Big Island : lava flow enters the ocean. Pahoehoe and aa lava.

Lava Creates New Land in Hawaii

Lava from Kilauea Volcano reaches the Pacific Ocean after a seven mile journey and adds new land to the Big Island of Hawaii. The land shown in the video is just a few weeks old. Lava from a tube just under the surface explodes high into the air as it meets the cold water from the Pacific Ocean.

Recorded November 28, 1998

Lava enters the sea on Lunar Eclipse

Lava flows from Kilauea Volcano ooze over large sea cliffs exploding into the Pacific Ocean. A couple lucky guests witnessed this new lava ocean entry from their front row seat during a Lava Ocean Adventure tour on December 9th, 2011. The lava graced the sea at 6:20PM. Hawaii Lava Boat Tours on the Big Island are a Hilo Attraction to see lava molten hot sizzle into the sea! Come see, hear and feel the heat from the worlds most active volcano Kilauea.

Lava flow into ocean

This volcano has been erupting since 1983, and this lava flow has been active since 2004. The noise you hear is not the lava entering the water, it is actually the wind on the mic of the camera. This was video is from about 100 yards (meters) from the lava, so any noise is from the tradewinds (and not the lava). I zoomed in with our Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital Elph. .

This is how all of the Hawaiian islands were formed- over the past 40 million years or so. Truly the most amazing thing my wife and I ever saw.
