???? EXCERPT ????
Retiring in the Dominican Republic. Today you will discover the pros, cons, and at the end of this episode, we make a surprising cost-of-living comparison between the Dominican Republic... and 2 other famous retirement destinations. In a time when Haiti is occupying the news because of the complete collapse of their society (including Cannibal gangs roaming around and untold levels of violence) You might think we from The Expat went crazy by suggesting that the Dominican Republic might be a good place for your golden years. After all, we are talking about a country that is located in the same island as Haiti. In fact, the only land border of the Dominican Republic is with Haiti. But both countries could not be more different. While sharing the same island and with similar population sizes - both have around 11 million people. They differ enormously in terms of social and economic development levels. In Haiti, the average life expectancy is 64 years, while in the Dominican Republic, it is 73 years. The unemployment rate in Haiti is 40%, while in the Dominican Republic is 13%.

WE FOUND THE PERFECT HOUSE! in Dominican Republic | Black American Family Life Abroad 2023

We recently moved to Cabrera, Dominican Republic after moving from San Pedro Sula, Honduras. However, after being in our house for less than a month on the North Coast we had to find a new rental property (we ended up in the house of horrors!) Our budget was SUPER tight and we were looking for something around 15,000 pesos (about 250 dollars). We ended having to increase our budget to 25,000 domincan pesos (or less than 500 dollars). Come with us as we explore houses on the beautiful North Coast of Dominican Republic!

ABOUT US & OUR CHANNEL
We are a expats and a typical black American family living and teaching abroad in Cabrera, Dominican Republic. We were born and raised in California but spent most of our adult life in Atlanta, GA where we met at Spelman and Morehouse College.

About a year ago we left our jobs teaching in the United States for a life abroad in Honduras before relocating to Domincan Republic. Our channel has 2 goals:

1. To show black families and people of color what a life abroad could look like.
2. To show all the beautiful things about Latin America.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT CABRERA DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Cabrera, Dominican Republic is the equivalent of a small town. It is located on the North Coast of the country east of Cabarete, Sosua, and West of Las Terrenas and Samana. The town is surrounded by beautiful beaches, views, and very friendly people. We have met many dominicans, haitains, canadianas, and a few americans of all socio-economic status living throughout Cabrera.

8 Reasons Why Americans LEAVE Costa Rica [Why I Left]

The TRUTH about living in Costa Rica: Why do so many Americans leave Costa Rica after moving there? In this video, I explain what causes expats to change their minds about retiring abroad and why I left Costa Rica after 8 years. Some of the initial reasons that people want to move to Costa Rica include the moderate climate, laid back lifestyle, fresh and healthy food, friendly people, beaches, medical tourism, and the low cost of living. But is Costa Rica really a safe and friendly country or is it actually dangerous and expensive? Once they arrive, many people realize that living in Costa Rica wasn't quite what they expected. Unfortunately, that results in people returning home quite soon after arriving.

After helping more than 500 foreigners move to Costa Rica and living there for eight years, this video explains the top reasons why people move back to the USA and why I left, too, so that you know more about what to expect BEFORE you get there. This is the real and sometimes dark truth about living in Costa Rica. What do you think are the biggest pros and cons of living in Costa Rica? Let us know in the comments.

BEAUTIFUL Puerto plata, Dominican Republic ????????

This is me Living in the Dominican Republic as an Expat

Living in the Dominican Republic as an expat can be a unique and enriching experience. The country is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and warm climate. Here are some key aspects to consider:

Culture and Lifestyle: Dominicans are generally known for their friendliness and hospitality, making it easier for expats to integrate into the local community. The country's culture is a blend of Spanish, African, and Indigenous influences, which is reflected in its music, dance, and cuisine.

Language: The official language is Spanish, so having some basic knowledge of Spanish can significantly enhance your experience and communication with locals.

Cost of Living: The cost of living in the Dominican Republic can be relatively lower compared to many Western countries. However, the cost varies depending on the location and lifestyle you choose.

Climate: The country has a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year. While the pleasant weather can be enjoyable, it's essential to prepare for hurricane season, which typically runs from June to November.

Healthcare: Healthcare facilities and services can vary in quality, especially outside major cities. It's advisable to have private health insurance to access the best medical care available.

Safety: Like any country, the Dominican Republic has its share of crime, particularly in urban areas. As an expat, it's essential to be aware of your surroundings and take necessary precautions to stay safe.

Housing: There are various housing options available, from luxury apartments to more affordable accommodations. Expats often choose to live in popular tourist areas or expat communities.

Work and Business: Finding work as an expat can be challenging unless you secure a job before arriving or have a specific skill set that is in demand. Many expats choose to start their own businesses, often in the tourism or hospitality industry.

Visa and Residency: Ensure you have the correct visa or residency status before moving to the Dominican Republic. Requirements may vary based on your nationality and the purpose of your stay.

Infrastructure: Major cities and tourist destinations generally have good infrastructure, but some rural areas may lack amenities and reliable services.

Overall, living in the Dominican Republic as an expat can be a rewarding experience, offering a chance to immerse yourself in a vibrant culture, beautiful landscapes, and a slower-paced lifestyle. However, like any international move, it's essential to do thorough research and plan accordingly to make your transition as smooth as possible.

Why are Expats Living in Dominican Republic #expatseverywhere

Mundo iorio: Why are expats living and working in the Dominican Republic?

Cost of Living: The cost of living in the Dominican Republic can be significantly lower than in many parts of New York City. This can be appealing to individuals or families seeking a more affordable lifestyle, particularly retirees looking to stretch their retirement savings.

Climate and Lifestyle: The Dominican Republic offers a tropical climate with beautiful beaches, warm weather, and an abundance of outdoor activities. This can be a major attraction for people looking to escape the harsh winters or seeking a more relaxed and laid-back lifestyle.

Investment and Business Opportunities: Some New Yorkers may see the Dominican Republic as an attractive destination for investment and business opportunities. The country's growing economy, favorable tax policies, and potential for growth in various industries can be enticing for entrepreneurs and investors.

Retirement Destination: The Dominican Republic is becoming a popular destination for retirees from various countries due to its pleasant climate, lower living costs, and the availability of retiree-friendly programs and services.

Cultural Ties: The Dominican Republic has a significant population of Dominican Americans, and some New Yorkers may have family ties or cultural connections to the country. This can be a motivating factor for individuals to consider relocating.

Remote Work Flexibility: The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of remote work, allowing people to work from anywhere. This newfound flexibility may have prompted some New Yorkers to consider moving to a more attractive location like the Dominican Republic.

It's important to note that individual motivations for moving can vary significantly, and these reasons are not exhaustive. If there has been a specific trend of New Yorkers moving to the Dominican Republic since my last update, I recommend checking more recent sources or news outlets for the latest information.

I am an expat living in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

As an Expat living in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic can be an exciting and vibrant experience. Santo Domingo is the capital city of the Dominican Republic and offers a mix of Caribbean charm, rich history, and modern amenities. Here are some aspects you may expect:

Cultural Diversity: Santo Domingo is a melting pot of cultures, attracting expats from around the world. You'll encounter a diverse community of locals, other expats, and tourists. This diversity enriches the social and cultural scene, offering opportunities to meet people from various backgrounds.

Cost of Living: The cost of living in Santo Domingo is generally lower compared to many Western countries. Rent, dining out, transportation, and entertainment can be relatively affordable. However, prices may vary depending on the neighborhood and lifestyle choices.

Climate: Santo Domingo has a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year. Expect hot and humid weather, especially during the summer months. It's advisable to stay hydrated and be prepared for occasional storms during the hurricane season.

Language: Spanish is the official language in the Dominican Republic, including Santo Domingo. While some locals may speak English, especially in tourist areas, it's helpful to learn some basic Spanish phrases to navigate daily life and interact with the local community.

Entertainment and Leisure: Santo Domingo offers a vibrant nightlife with numerous bars, clubs, and restaurants catering to different tastes. You can enjoy a wide range of cuisines, including traditional Dominican food and international options. The city also has theaters, art galleries, museums, and historical sites that showcase its rich cultural heritage.

Safety: Like any large city, it's important to be cautious about personal safety and take necessary precautions. While Santo Domingo has some areas with higher crime rates, most expats live in safer neighborhoods and can enjoy their daily lives without major concerns. It's advisable to research and choose a secure area to reside.

Transportation: Santo Domingo has a public transportation system that includes buses and a metro system, making it relatively easy to get around the city. Taxis and ride-hailing services like Uber are also available. However, traffic congestion can be a challenge during peak hours, so plan your commutes accordingly.

Healthcare: The healthcare system in Santo Domingo has both public and private hospitals and clinics. Expats often prefer private healthcare facilities, which generally provide higher standards of care. It's recommended to have comprehensive health insurance that covers medical services in the Dominican Republic.

Beaches and Outdoor Activities: The Dominican Republic is famous for its stunning beaches, and Santo Domingo is no exception. There are several beautiful coastal areas nearby, where you can relax, swim, or enjoy water sports. The city also has parks and recreational areas for outdoor activities like jogging, cycling, and picnicking.

Overall, living in Santo Domingo as an expat offers a mix of cultural experiences, affordability, and warm weather. It's a city that provides a balance between modern conveniences and the charm of Caribbean living.
