A day at one of the worlds most challenging airports, 4K planespotting at St Barts

This video includes 35 minutes of incredible action at St Jean airport on the island of St Barthélemy during a recent trip abroad
Filmed freehand using a 4K Sony AX53 video camera

The airport is situated between a hill and beach at either end making it a tricky place to land. Especially coming over the hill almost aircraft tend to perform a nose dive manoeuvre to be able to touchdown within the limited amount of runway available

St Barts is a secluded island and the tiny airport is the only gateway apart from Boats/Ferries meaning all flights are mostly from neighbouring Carribean islands which have larger airports.
This is why you see plenty of Winair Twin Otters back and forth from St Maarten aswell as the St Barth Commuter Grand Caravans
Air Antilles and Tradewind operate services from further afield, those being San Juan and Pointe-a-Pitre

Feel free to like and subscribe. Feedback is greatly appreciated

World's MOST EXTREME Airports (Caribbean Edition)

Watch this video to explore THREE of the world’s MOST EXTREME Airports! The best part, they’re all a ten minute flight apart from each other.

St Maarten will be our base of operations for this Caribbean Adventure. We’ll first explore the world famous Maho Beach where it’s easy to watch jumbo jets land at the nearby St. Maarten Princess Juliana International Airport.

After that, we’ll make the unforgettable 10-minute flight to St. Baarths and experience the unbelievable approach into that island’s airport. It requires specially trained pilots to fly over a hill – and oncoming traffic - before essentially diving toward the airport below. It is hair-raising and anxiety inducing, not for the faint of heart!

We’ll see more of the island before flying to Saba, home to the world’s shortest commercial runway. The approach into that airport and landing is as close to landing on an aircraft carrier as I’ve ever felt, but it was the departure that was the most nail-biting of all!

This Caribbean Aviation Adventure is one we’d recommend to just about everyone. Hope you enjoy!

0:37 St. Maarten

World’s Shortest Runway Landing - Caribbean’s Extreme Flight

Join me on a flight to 2 of the most dangerous airports in the Caribbean; Saba and St Barth. Here, you are not afraid to fly, but rather to land!

Starting with some plane spotting action at St Maarten Princess Juliana Int’l Airport. Most beach vacationers gather on Maho Beach and anxiously wait for the plane to fly a few meters above their heads before landing and resisting the jet blast on takeoff.

I flew with SXM Airways pilot Jean-Marc Oliver on the Britten Norman Islander (BN-2A-26) from St Maarten to Saba. Saba Airport has the world’s shortest commercial runway at just 400m. The entire island is mountainous and looks like Jurassic Park. Watch our landing and takeoff at Saba, the plane used the entire runway for takeoff and literally “dropped” after leaving the runway!

Next is St Barth. As beautiful as the runway on the Caribbean island, the landing is extreme! Located between the mountains and the sea, it is only 640 meters long. We encountered some strong crosswinds and turbulence before “diving” into the airport. It was some of my most exciting flight as I had to stop filming to watch out for the landing.

St Barths Plane Landing on one of the Smallest Airstrips in the World.

A scary plane landing in St Barths. Watch the Exceptional Villas team arrive in St Barths airport in one of the smallest planes and land on one of the smallest airstrips in the world.

St Barths is one of the nicest Vacation Destinations in the Caribbean however landing in this tiny island of just 8 square miles can be a scary experience. The airstrip in St Barts is small, in fact it is the second shortest in the world, and pilots are required to have special training to land. For many, the landing, especially on a windy day, is an adventure in itself. The Island offer the most stunning vacation rentals on the planet.

Thanks for watching and feel free to like and share.

Landing at St Barths TFFJ (Pilots View) _ Left Pattern RWY 28 (Part 2)

This is my second landing at St. Barths. Left Traffic for Runway 28. A very interesting approach with a no Go-Around option.

I go over the approach a bit using graphics, but this video is not to be used as a substitute for actual training at St. Barths.

Again, WOW is the word. Enjoy.

Special thanks to Aeroclub St. Martin and Thomas.

????Watch out! St Barths

St. Barths Crazy Approach! Famous Landing

Shot from the cockpit of a Winair Twin Otter landing runway 10, St Barths. This tricky approach has been made famous by the dive-bomb landing pilots must make in order to avoid a hilltop just before the beginning of the runway. The approach used to be much worse until a plane crash into the hillside prompted officials to blast and remove a big portion off the top of the hill, making the approach safer. French authorities require special pilot certification to be able to fly in and out of SBH. Shot by Damon Hoydysh.

✈ Shortest runway in the world ✔

Shortest runway in the world! HD 1080p, landing and take off, saba airport (Yrausquin Airport)

Saba/Yrausquin airport : 17º38´44N 63º13´14W

The airport's risky reputation arises from the airport's physical position: it is flanked on one side by high hills; and on the runway's other side and both ends, cliffs drop into the sea. Additionally, the runway at the airport is extremely short (400m) this creates the possibility that an airplane could under/overshoot the runway during landing or takeoff and end up in the sea or dashed on the rocky cliffs.
Although the airport is officially marked as closed to traffic (X), regional airline propeller aircraft are able to land there under waivers from The Netherlands Antilles' Civil Aviation Authority. The most common aircraft to land there are the Twin Otter and BN-2 Islander
Irausquin Airport can be seen from some places in Saint Martin.

Jet aircraft are unable to land at the airport, because the runway is too short (approx. 1,300 ft or 396 m). However, smaller airplanes (DHC-6, BN-2 and helicopters) are common sights there. There is a small ramp and terminal on the southwest flank of the runway. The ramp also has a designated helipad. The terminal building houses offices for Winair, immigration and security, a fire department with one fire truck and a tower. The tower is an advisory service only and does not provide air traffic control. Aviation fuel is not available on the island of Saba.

The only airline currently serving Yrausquin Airport is locally owned Winair, which operates daily flights to Sint Maarten and Sint Eustatius aboard a de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter. The flight to Saint Maarten takes about twelve minutes.

Head on Landing at St Barts, Gustaf III Airport

Videos Every Saturday & Wednesday!!
This is one of the Scariest landing I've ever filmed.
Yes it was actually pretty stupid of me to stand there... and I got removed before any plane could depart or land again. But I got a pretty nice shot out of it. I hope you'll like it!

And don't forget to guess the sound at the end! I'll be giving away a price to the 3 best aircraft sound guessers at the end of 2013. it'll be a spotting DVD.
Good Luck everybody!!!

Landing in one of the world's most dangerous airports, St. Barth (SBH) #Shorts

This landing was so epic!

The pilots are so very skilled at what they do. With crosswinds and an already treacherous approach, the mixture was right for a sensational landing.

Challenge St Barts Airport with amazing DHC-6 Twin Otter landing

The unique Gustaf III Airport St Barts (SBH) on the Caribbean Island of Saint Barthelemy is the third most dangerous airport in the world, one place ahead of SXM Airport St. Maarten.
The video shows a spectacular landing of the Winair De Havilland Canada DHC-6-300 Twin Otter (PH-WII) coming from St.Marten.

St Barts landing places high demands on the pilots and that's because: the approach takes place over a hill with a lot of car traffic, then a steep descent to the runway RWY 28 with only 646 meters and this ends just before the sea.
On the hill, the planes fly just a few meters above the car traffic and the descent is often complicated by gusty crosswinds.
The new Airport name now is: Aéroport Rémy de Haenen (SBH).
