Things To See On Lake Titicaca: Exploring the Uros Islands and Isla Taquile from Puno

Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world. And if you love amazing places, this is one for your bucket list.

Not only does this lake, which sits at 12,507 feet above sea level, connect remote cities in both Peru and Bolivia, but it's home to some of the world's most amazing cultures.

We had the chance to experience two very unique cultures in one incredibly special place. We visit the Uru people, who have been living on floating reed islands in Lake Titicaca for over 1,000 years, and the Taquileano people on Isla Taquile who have adapted to modern times on their own terms.

/// ABOUT US ///
Hi! We are Eric and Sarah, a couple of Canadians currently travelling around Peru. We’ve been married since 2017 but have known each other since we were only 6 years old! During our last year of university, we spent 4 months in Honduras on a semester abroad and fell in love with Latin America. Since then, we began planning and saving to do an extensive Latin America tour. 2020 delayed those plans by half a year but during this time stuck in BC, we explored a new hobby (like everyone in the pandemic) of videography and photography. We are now using our new skills to document our adventures around South America. Our desire through these videos is to provide helpful and inspiring content for other travelers while also showing people around the world how beautiful and beautiful South America truly is! Thanks for following along and please leave a comment to say hi!

**Lake Titicaca Floating Islands**

It was raining so hard at the floating islands that my microphone got soaked and it was difficult to hear anything, so I cut the audio and decided to put the info here.

First off, the islands really are floating on the lake. The local Uro people gather totora reeds from around the lake and weave them together. They criss-cross the reeds to make a sturdy platform. Every 2 weeks, a new layer is added because the bottom layers start to decay over time. The islands range in thickness from 18 inches (.5 meter) to 6 feet (2 meters).

The floating islands don't move all around the lake, as I thought in the video. I learned that they are anchored in place with sharp sticks and long rope. They stay in the same general area - close to the reeds and protected in the bay of Puno. One of the locals joked with me saying she doesn't have a passport, so she's not allowed to float across to Bolivia. The houses on the floating islands are also made of the same totora reeds.

The boat at 1:04 has a base made up of the same totora reeds as the islands. These are bound together tightly so they can build a wooden frame on top of it.

**Taquile Island**

Taquile Island is known for its textiles and fine handicrafts. Interestingly, only the men are allowed to knit on the island. The women spin and dye the wool, but only the men create the finished product. This is unique, since everywhere else we encountered knitting, it was the women doing everything (we learned all about textiles on our way to Machu Picchu:

**What's going on?**
I'm on a business trip with some friends from school. We're visiting a lot of companies and learning about business in Peru and all of Latin America. Between business visits, we're exploring and eating all the food. :)

On this video, we explore Lake Titicaca both in Bolivia and Peru.

On the Bolivia border, we stayed in Copacabana for one night and took a day boat trip to Isla de Sol. In the evening, we enjoyed a beautiful sunset from Cerro Calvario in Copacabana.

The following morning we crossed the border to Peru. From Puno, we set off to Uros Floating Islands where we experienced staying with a local family for 2 nights. We explored the fascinating totora islands, went fishing, tried on their traditional clothing and more!

Lake Titicaca Travel Guide (Uros, Amantaní and Taquile Islands)

To close off our trip to Peru we headed from Cuzco to Puno with the intention of covering Lake Titicaca (Lago Titicaca) as best we could over the duration of two days. Our trip started from Puno early in the morning when we boarded a boat bound for the Uros Island. The Uros people, who lives on floating reed islands, welcomed us to their floating islands where we had a chance to tour around and purchase some souvenirs.

Afterwards, we took a traditional rowing boat made out of reeds to another island before heading off to Amantaní. Upon arriving our host family greeted us and we headed to our homestay where we had a traditional lunch consisting of Quinoa soup, potatoes, fried cheese and rice. Afterwards we hiked to the top of the Island (Pachamama) where we had incredible 360 degree views. It felt like we could almost touch the clouds. In the evening we dressed up in traditional attire (ponchos) and headed over for a dance party with live traditional music. The following morning we visited our final island (Taquile) before heading back to Puno. Overall, it was an incredible trip and one we recommend highly; however, be sure to do the two day trip and opposed to the one day option for a more relaxed time.

Lake Titicaca Travel Guide (Uros, Amantaní, Taquile) to Puno, Peru Travel Video Transcript:

So we are taking a really fun overnight trip from Puno today to visit Lake Titicaca. Yeah, we're going to visit several islands and do a homestay overnight. Yeah, and we'll get to meet the different communities that live here because we have Aymara people and Quechua people. So we've just arrived at our first island. And this one is called Corazon de Lago which means the heart of the lake. And this is an Aymara community that lives on a floating reed island so let's go have a look around. Let's check it out.

So it is a bit of a strange sensation walking on the reed islands because it is not solid ground and your feet do sink in a little bit but not to the point where you feel like you're going to fall through and you know go in the water. But still kind of interesting.

Okay, so what have we learned so far on this floating reed island? So we've visiting the Uros floating reed islands and there is approximately 80 to 90 of them. And the people who originally came here were escaping hostile neighbors.
So this is quite a secluded environment for them.

We've made it to our third island of the day. This one is called Amantani and this island is actually home to Quechua people whereas the first two that we visited were home to the Aymara people.

So aside from meeting our host families, what I'm most excited for is food. Because it is already lunchtime. It's a little bit past our lunch time actually. And we forgot to pack snacks. Yep. So I'm starving. So before we settle in we're going to get some local food. Yeah, and apparently they are vegetarian on this island, so we're going to be having a Quinoa soup and then just like potatoes and roots and different vegetables. Cheese and stuff like that. Cheese, yes. So it should be good.

So are you doing okay? A little bit out of breathe? Yeah, a little bit out of breath. We're still feeling the altitude. Actually Lake Titicaca is higher than Cuzco if you can believe that.

Sopa de Quinoa. Ah, sopa de quinoa. Quinoa soup. Ah, que rico.

So we reached the top of Pachamama. How are the views? Oh, we sure did. The views are insane here. It is almost like you're touching the clouds. It is like you can reach up and touch them.

So we're all dressed up, we've had our dinner and now it is time to go to the party. And we are dressed up in traditional outfits. Party!

Alright, so it is a new day and we are visiting a new island. Yes, this is our last stop on Lake Titicaca. This is Taquile Island and we're just going to take a wander around and see what we find. Yes, maybe we'll find our guide and she can tell us a bit of the history of the place. Let's go find her.

This is part of our Travel in Peru series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Peruvian culture, Peruvian arts, Peruvian foods, Peruvian religion, Peruvian cuisine and Peruvian people. All things Peruano. The best of Comida Peruana and Cocina Peruana.

Lake Titicaca: floating Uros Island, Amantani Island & Taquile Island (Travel Videoblog 038)

The lake Titicaca is the largest lake in South America and one of the highest in the world. I went on an Island tour from the Peruvian side to discover how people used to live here. Starting with the artificial floating reed Islands of the Uros I continued with Amantani Island where I stayed with a family before finishing the trip on Taquile Island on the next day.

This tour is possibly the most popular thing to do at the lake Titicaca which also means that this affects the way the inhabitants live today and use the tourism industry as their main source of income. Nevertheless the landscape and the panoramic views you come to see are impressive and unique.

This is only one travel video blog of my HolaGringo trip through South America - be sure to subscribe & don't miss upcoming episodes!

Lake Titicaca, Peru: The Floating Islands (Uros, Taquile & Amantani).

The Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the World at 3856 metres above sea level, it is bigger than Switzerland. Its shores and islands, such as Amantani and Taquile, are home to the Aymaras and Quechuas, who are amongst Peru's oldest peoples, predating the Incas by a thousand years. Here visitors may wander through old traditional villages where Spanish is a second language and where ancient myths and beliefs still hold true. Our program also includes the visit to the famous Uros Floating Islands. Our tour is led by a local guide who will introduce you its inhabitants and will explain about their history and traditions. Here we will take a nice ride on their little handmade reed boats around the floating villages.

Lake Titicaca Floating Reed Islands and Homestay | Puno, Amantani and Taquile | Peru TRAVEL VLOG

Staying in hostels is great, but getting to stay with a local family on an island on the highest lake in the world is different! Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world. In this video we arrive to Peru from Bolivia and visit the lake from Puno.

What at first looked like a bit of a tourist trap, the islands proved beautiful and people were spread out and the islands conservation is well preserved. The reed islands of Uros could be seen as a bit touristy if you only saw those, but if you take the time to head out to the islands they have such charm and the people there are so welcoming.

We danced and sat under the stars, dealt with height issues and marvelled at the beauty of the lake. Enjoy us staying with a family on the highest lake in the world...

We are so new to vlog travel, having just provided highlights set to music before (see the SE Asia series). SO this adventure is filmed and edited on the road, in hostels, on the ground with THE most slow WIFI. Having to travel and edit is going to be challenging. We would love for you to follow us in the journey and hope the videos provide good information if you are planning to travel to the area or just interested. If it helps just one of you, then thats amazing!

Join as we learn how to navigate this continent and this world, with a backpack on and camera set to record. Our day to day experiences, the highs and the low. REAL backpacking, hostels, transport.

UROS ISLAND STAY! Lake Titicaca, Puno | Peru Travel Vlog

Overnight busing from Cusco successfully got us to Puno! There we got the opportunity to stay on a Reed Island with a local family.
More information on the Uru people!

Though the language barrier between us and our host family made it impossible to learn more history from the people themselves - once we got data we googled for more information.

SPENDING THE NIGHT ON AN ISLAND ON LAKE TITICACA: the Uros Tribe & Home Stay | Things To Do in Uros

Hey Lovelies ???? I'm so glad you're here!

This week I take to Lake Titicaca - we visit the UROS islands and do a homestay on the Amantani Islands. This is my last video about Peru and I am so sad this month is nearly over! I hope you guys have enjoyed watching this series as much as I've enjoyed making it! ❤

If you have never done a homestay before, they are definitely something you must do. I will share as much information as possible. When you do these, you do these as a pair, which is good as you are not left alone. The host family can help you with the language and knowing about the surroundings.
