San Pedro La Laguna in 4K | Guatemala | Lake Atitlan

San Pedro La Laguna is a Guatemalan town on the southwest shore of Lake Atitlán. For centuries, San Pedro La Laguna has been inhabited by the Tz'utujil people, and in recent years it has also become a tourist destination for its Spanish language schools, nightlife, and proximity to the lake and volcanoes.

Fun Fact: Our Free to Wander host had suffered a broken leg while in San Pedro, and was miraculously healed by one of the many Medicine Women that resides in this town. Ask around and you will find them.

The Most Amazing Town on Lake Atitlan - SAN PEDRO, GUATEMALA!!

Read all about my adventures in the travel memoir Beers, Tears & Broken Veneers available to buy right here on Amazon:

SAN PEDRO is a sleepy little town on the South Western shores of LAKE ATITLAN. Many BACKPACKERS and TRAVELERS alike flock to this town for the cheap BOOZE and NIGHTLIFE. Ask anyone in GUATEMALA about San Pedro and they all say the same thing its nothing but a party town. But is this really true, I travelled across the lake to find out.

After visiting PANAJACHEL, SAN LUCAS and SANTIAGO on Lake Atitlan it was time for me to find a town to chill out and do some editing. I really like Santiago but I found that the prices were just a little to high for me, my GUESTHOUSE for example was really nice but I was paying $12 per night. Doesn't seem like much but when you multiply that by 30 days the price goes up. I spoke to a few of my fellow travellers and they all told me that San Pedro, which was a 15 minute BOAT journey away, had the cheapest prices. But it also had a reputation as a party town. I'm no square, back in the day I partied with the best of them (I even owned a bar in PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA), but now that I'm a little older I party a lot less and just wanted to chill out.

I decided to take the chance and investigate San Pedro for myself. What I didn't know was San Pedro had two docks, a western dock and an eastern dock. The western dock is where all the bars and partying is done, one big tourist trap. The eastern dock is connected to the part of the town where the local Guatemalan's live and there are less tourists. By sheer luck the boat going from Santiago to San Pedro docked in the eastern part of the town, I had hit gold, I was away from the TOURIST TRAP.

In typical fashion I didn't book a HOSTEL, HOTEL or GUESTHOUSE. I always find that if you just turn upto a place you will get the best deal. After getting off the boat I immediately tackled the big hill that lead towards the town, it was a beast, especially carrying two bags. I got about halfway up and seen an alleyway with a bunch of signs advertising hostels. I looked around and found a place called SAN FRANCISCO. A lady showed me upstairs to a room on the top floor which had a balcony with an epic view of the LAKE. The price for this accommodation was only $8 per night, or there was a weekly rate which worked out at $6 per night. I stayed one night and loved it: free drinking water, the use of the kitchen and washroom and of course the view which was just epic. I had found my cheap accommodation for a month of editing.

As for the town eastern part of the town, well just look at the video, it is amazing. Very cultural, less tourists and lots of street art. I just loved it. I even had a walk round to the western part of San Pedro and its like a different town. BARS and RESTAURANTS everywhere, tuk tuk drivers looking for business and hundreds of tourists. After three minutes in this part of San Pedro it reminded me why I was better off in the eastern part of town.

Bottom line, San Pedro is a town of two halves. If you want to party and be surrounded by other TOURISTS and backpackers go to the western part of the town. But if you want peace and quiet go to the eastern part of town. Its rich in culture, very peaceful and very cheap.

Magical Lake Atitlan Guatemala Travel Guide 4K

In this Lake Atitlan travel guide we explore 5 villages around the lake. Including Santiago De Atitlan, San Juan La Laguna, Santa Catarina, San Antonio Palopo and Panajachel. I would say this is the best place to visit in Guatemala because there are many villages to explore around the lake and culture to explore. But best of all is probably going to be the incredible natural beauty and scenery of the lake Atitlan.

There are a few towns around the lake also worth mentioning but we did not go. Such as San Marcos, which is popular with new age explorers, San Pedro La Laguna with foreign tourist and San Lucas for its proximity outside of the lake region to the Pacific Ocean. Our travel guide is from Santa Cruz La Laguna and says that one is the best. If you can get around to many of the towns and villages you will certainly feel culturally enriched and as if you really met the Mayan people.

San Pedro La Laguna is so Much Fun (Lake Atitlan)

Buy me a coffee

San Pedro is a sexy little pueblo of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. It is the most popular spot for backpackers, for good reason. Even though it has a laid back vibe, it has plenty of activities, from kayaking, and paragliding, to language learning, chocolate tasting, yoga, textile, and classes for everything. It's also has many nice cafes, good food and active nightlife.

On the negative side if you try to hike the Indian Nose without a guide you might be robbed by the local banditos and the police will do nothing to help you. Hopefully they get some special forces up in those hills. It wouldn't take much to camp out a few mercenaries and have them bust the robbers.

Today I explored, hiked shopped, and toured all around San Pedro La Laguna. I saw how the local textiles are produced, tried making my own chocolate, visited a local art gallery, and hiked a local lookout point.

What to See in San Pedro la Laguna - Guatemala

In this episode of DBH Unplugged, David tours the different lakeside destinations around Atitlan, beginning with a tuk tuk ride out to a local coffee plantation. Here David learns the processes of fertilizing the plants, which move from raw beans into worm castings, which are then used to fertilize the new coffee plants. Home to other high quality products, this FEDEPMA plantation is a wonderful place to pick up some locally produced goods. Back into the central part of San Pedro, David tours the local markets and immaculately clean church grounds before taking off to another village. Wrapping up in the village of San Juan, David learns all about the dying and weaving techniques of the local textile factories. To learn more about visiting these fascinating, cultural areas on Lake Atitlan, check out the DBH Guide to Guatemala, also available for your Kindle.

San Pedro Volcano Hike, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

#volcanSanPedro #guatlinda #guatemala
Are Robbers a Problem Hiking The San Pedro Volcano?

The San Pedro Volcano is one of 37 volcanoes in the country of Guatemala and the oldest of the three that rise above the beautiful Lake Atitlan. San Pedro soars to an impressive height of 3,020 Meters, just shy of 10,000 feet. It is a stratovolcano and not considered active. Summiting San Pedro is a very popular tourist activity in the region, but the trail has been plagued in the past with robbers, causing some uncertainty and fear amongst hikers. To reach the beginning of the hike you travel to the town of San Pedro La Laguna which sits on the volcanoes slopes. For many people including our family this means a boat ride across the lake.

So how safe is it to climb San Pedro? This is one of the most frequently asked questions when people consider this hike, because of it's shaky history with robbers on the trail. Are you going to get robbed if you try to climb San Pedro? This was a question that we asked many people while living in Panajachel before we ever attempted to do the hike. The answer we usually got, was that robbers were not really as much of an issue anymore. This always came with a caveat though, that it was still a possibility. In response to the problems with robbers on the trail, the Town of San Pedro la Laguna sends a pair of police officers up the volcano every day and hiking alone is highly discouraged. Contrary to what some places on the internet say, you do not need to hire a guide to go up the volcano. Guides are included as part of your fee to enter the ecological park that protects the volcano.

In our experience this hike was nothing but fun! It was difficult yes, but robbers were the least of our worries. This doesn't mean that they don't exist however. Talking with our guide and with the local police we learned that they had arrested people just a few weeks prior to our arrival. Just be smart about things. follow the rules, don't hike alone, and stick to the trail. In our opinion robbers on San Pedro are the exception, not the rule and the Guatemalan authorities are doing their best to make this a fun and safe adventure for all to enjoy.
