La Fortuna, Costa Rica (Arenal Volcano National Park in Alajuela Province)

La Fortuna is a cute, Costa Rican town. It used to be primarily a farming town but thanks to its many natural attractions, tourism soon became the main economic backbone. Nowadays, the town is the main tourism hub of the Arenal area, all the way from Arenal Lake and Arenal Volcano.
Although there are a lot of tourists, you still get a good local vibe. One interesting fact about this town is that majority of the businesses in Fortuna are owned by local Costa Ricans which is a rare occurrence in the touristic areas of Costa Rica.

As one of the more popular destinations in Costa Rica, the months of December – April and July and August are extremely busy. You will need to pre-book your tours and hotels for these dates. May, June, September, October and November are in the low season with much less tourists.

Best things to do in La Fortuna, Costa Rica.

The Arenal area is a very popular travel destination in Costa Rica.It is known for its beautiful landscapes, adventure activities, access to natural hot springs, scenic hiking trails, volcanoes. It is located near the small town of La Fortuna. If you’re looking for amazing outdoor adventures, then La Fortuna is one of the best places to go in Costa Rica. Here is our list of amazing things to do in La Fortuna and Arenal, Costa Rica!

1. Soak in natural hot springs
One of the most popular attractions in La Fortuna is the natural hot springs in the area. Underground rivers are naturally heated by the Arenal Volcano, bubbling up into steamy hot mineral baths. There are many hot spring resorts in La Fortuna, one of the most popular ones is Tabacón Thermal Resort and Spa. If you are on a budget, there is a free natural hot spring literally next to Tabacon - across the street. That’s where the locals go and it’s called Rio Chollin.
2. Hike around Arenal Volcano and see lava fields

Arenal Volcano was completely dormant for many years until it unexpectedly erupted in 1968. This explosion destroyed the town at the base and killed many people. Up until 2010, Arenal was Costa Rica’s most active volcano. Since then it has been dormant for over 10 years. There are 2 parks where you can hike around this volcano for great views - Arenal Volcano National Park and the Arenal 1968 Volcano View and Lava Trails. Both parks take you through the lava fields around Arenal Volcano. We hiked in Arenal National Park and it was a cool hike. The entrance to the park was 15 dollars when we visited. It is recommended to arrive at the place with a 4 by 4 vehicle. The road in the park is gravel. The hike is easy and at the end of the trail, you can see hardened lava and take stairs to a lookout point where you can see Arenal in all its beauty and the lake on the other side. If you continue this loop hike instead of returning the way you came you will see a very tall Ceiba tree. It’s over four hundred years old. During our hike, we also saw some wild birds. The trails can be quite muddy in some places, so make sure you have proper footwear.

3. Visit La Fortuna Waterfall
This waterfall is located about 3 miles outside of the town with the same name as the waterfall La Fortuna. The waterfall is 246 feet tall (76 meters) and it’s located at the base of the dormant Cerro Chato volcano.
The entrance fee to the La Fortuna waterfall is 18 US dollars. There are nice facilities at the entrance including bathrooms, showers, and a gift shop.
Make sure to check out the waterfall and the canyon from the viewing platform before heading down, because it offers an amazing view.
You will need to take around 480 steps down with handrails and places to rest to reach the bottom of the waterfall. There are 2 places where you can swim - the pool below the waterfall and the pool further down the river.

4. Visit Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park.
Mistico Hanging Bridges is a must-see attraction if you're staying for a few days near Arenal. The 2-mile hiking trail takes through an amazingly beautiful jungle forest. The park has 6 hanging bridges that hang above the rainforest. The hike takes around 2 hours. Take it slow and enjoy this gorgeous location! The bridges are maintained really well. They are quite high, the highest bridge is approximately 230 feet above the ground, so if you don’t like heights, be mentally prepared! There are two options to do a self-guided tour which costs 26 US dollars or book a guided tour. The guide will show you wild animals that you most likely won’t notice yourself, but you will have to pay extra for the guide. We decided to save money and did a self-guided tour. Make sure to bring closed shoes. We heard that's a requirement. Also, bring enough water for the hike - the hike is not difficult, but it’s very humid. Also if you want to see more animals make sure to visit in the morning. It’s a great place to see Costa Rica’s wildlife.

In Costa Rica day 3. کی تلاش میں Arenal Volcano. See if I am able to find it. Part 1

The hike was amazing near La Fortuna Costa Rica. Lost in the jungle and got very tired.

Volcanic Hot Springs, La Fortuna | Costa Rica | Tabacón vs Free

#HotSpringsCostaRica #Tabacón #LaFortuna

The volcanic hot springs at the base of Arenal volcano are one of the main tourist attractions in La Fortuna, Costa Rica. These natural thermal spas (or Agua Termales) are around 38°C/100°F but different pools have different temperatures.

La Fortuna has a wide range of hot springs and spas where you can soak in the mineral rich volcanic water. These include Ecotermales, Baldi and the most famous one, Tabacón which is part of the Tabacón Resort & Spa.

We visited Tabacón thermal hot springs as well as the free hot springs in La Fortuna, which are right next door. We wanted to see whether the $70 USD entrance fee to Tabacón was worth the spa experience....and whether you should visit the premium hot springs and spas or just got to the completely natural spas (that are free).

Whilst you can stay at Tabacón resort and gain access to the spa, most people pay for a 4 hour visit either 10am - 2pm or 6pm - 10pm with prices starting from $70 depending on the time of year. You can also buy a full day pass with lunch or dinner (or both) with prices ranging from $85 - $105 USD. Finally, as a spa they also offer a range of other services such as massage on site.

To book:

The free hot springs are just across the road from Tabacón and use exactly the same thermal river! They may not be as pristine but you are still surrounded by nature and the rainforest that covers much of La Fortuna.

EPIC Volcano Hike - Exploring Volcán Arenal and La Fortuna

Bringing our trip full circle, we spent our last weekend in La Fortuna. Up first though, we had to go get a COVID test to be allowed on the plane home. After getting a swab stuck so far up our noses that it tickled our brains, we hit a minor setback. The neighborhood our airbnb was in lost power and the motorized gate for the neighborhood was stuck closed. So after climbing the steep hill to get our suitcases, we were back on the road and headed to La Fortuna.

We spend the rest of the day exploring Arenal Volcano where we got some fantastic views, including one of the peak, which is pretty rare since the top is very often covered by clouds! We wrapped up our day at La Fortuna Pub to enjoy the best wings in the world.

The best decision of my life, after a long hike, visit Hot Springs in Fortuna Costa Rica

The best decision of my life, after a long hike, Hot Springs in Fortuna Costa Rica

We did 3 long hiking trips on the same day. Starting at 7:30 a.m. the last walk ends at 6:30 p.m.

We visited the Hanging Bridge, La Fortuna Waterfalls and the Arenal Volcano.

By the end of the tours we were exhausted and our feet were sore.

Well, the best decision was to visit the hot springs to relax.

Baldi Hot Springs and Eco Termales Hot springs, the best Hot sprigs I've been to.

My perfect La Fortuna Itinerary | Review & Guide

#LaFortunaItinerary #ThingstodoLaFortuna #ArenalTrips

Wrapping up 4 days in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, I wanted to do a quick review and also include what would be my perfect itinerary for La Fortuna and Arenal if I could have my time back.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in La Fortuna. The climate is great. Sure, it does rain a bit but it doesn't have the stifling heat that Costa Rica's coast has. It's peaceful. You wake up to a crazy amount of birdsong. There's loads of stuff to do from volcano treks, waterfalls, hot springs and zip lining. Essentially the whole of La Fortuna is set up for tourism so it's super easy to organise various trips and everyone is incredibly helpful.

If you're in Costa Rica I would highly recommend making the trip to La Fortuna. Personally, I would visit Arenal/La Fortuna after the coast so that you have some contrast both in terms of climate and in terms of how relaxing it can be.

Here's my perfect itinerary for La Fortuna over 4 days. As you can see, there's loads of things to do in La Fortuna:

Day 1: Rio Celeste. A full day trip about 1 hour and 45 minutes from La Fortuna. It involves a hike to the river and waterfalls where the water is, well, a crazy colour. Turquoise, baby blue water. The photos and videos almost look fake.

Day 2: Ziplining. Sky Adventures are the most well known company in the area but you have a number to choose from. The zip lines themselves are very high and very long, some are 170m high and 800m long, giving you an incredible view of the surrounding area.

You could also go white water rafting - we actually bumped into a group that had just returned from white water rafting and they were very impressed!

Day 3: Mistico Hanging Bridges. Get there early so that you are the first ones in the park and take your time at the first bridge (it has the best views). Incredibly peaceful and if you're lucky you'll be able to see Arenal Volcano over the rainforest canopy.

Follow this up with La Fortuna Waterfall in the afternoon. You can go to the waterfall in the morning but it might be too cold to really enjoy. The free waterfalls are very close to the main La Fortuna waterfall so you can easily do both in a couple of hours.

Day 4: Hot Springs. We went to Tabacón Resort & Spa which is one of the more premium hot springs, but you do have multiple options. Just relax and soak yourself in the natural volcanic thermal spas. Again, you can also do the free ones either as a cheaper option or in addition to the paid hot springs.

And enjoy!

Costa Rica Travel : La Fortuna River and Waterfalls : Rainforest Adventure

Welcome Back,

This episode we are getting more comfortable in Costa Rica and the La Fortuna Area and exploring what the dense Costa Rican Rainforest has to offer. With our lodging at Rancho Cerro Azul in the La Fortuna Area being primely located, we have plenty of access to much of the easy to access outdoorsy features that it has to offer. This adventure we visit El Salto La Fortuna which is a downriver portion of the La Fortuna waterfall. This is a free local attraction complete with breathtaking river views, a sketchy walk, a rope swing and plenty of space for plenty of tourists to decent upon. Right in the parking location of the La Fortuna Rope Swing attraction are friendly locals grilling up some delicious foods for the hungry and famished traveler to partake on.

The next portion includes visiting Trev's favorite portion of traveling, tourist things. Or in this case La Fortuna Waterfalls. This attraction weeds out many tourists while still attracting the fittest and most determined of them. La Fortuna waterfalls in down an apx 500 step path that leads to the bottoms of the falls. This is where tiktokers and YouTubers alike like to show up early and sit for hours in front of la Fortuna waterfalls for the perfect shot. Not Ti, too cold. However just around the corner to the La Fortuna waterfall is a nice shallower portion with lush foliage, fish, and a kid/family-friendly area to relax. As you head back up from the base of La Fortuna waterfall, positively famished from the grueling (or not so) 500 steps back up to the start, you can always stop for a bite to eat at their Rainforest Cafe, complete with tourist appropriate simple foods.

Of course, after visiting the infamous La Fortuna waterfalls in Costa Rica, it only makes sense to stop by and watch some Sloths, because Pura Vida beetches. unbeknownst to us, Sloths are essentially impossible to spot, luckily for only $45 per person, you can hire a guide with killer binoculars to find those hard to spot Slots, Hawks and Toucans who love to hide in plain sight in the dense jungle. However, as you spend your time on the sloth walk, you will notice that they are cute and worth the cost to protect the adorable species.

To liven or slow things down, we head to the world-famous (according to them) Baldi's hot springs just north of the La Fortuna area. Baldi's self-proclaimed cleanest hot springs and largest in the area, and it's hard to imagine a larger amusement park, with its sprawling layout of several hot springs with waters of varying temperatures and even a kids area with tepid bathwater and a play area.

La Fortuna Waterfalls | Catarata Río Fortuna San Carlos Alajuela Costa Rica

THE FORTUNA WATERFALL

The Fortuna River Waterfall is a natural area managed sustainably by Integral Development Association of La Fortuna (ADIFORT), a non-profit organization founded since August 31, 1969, having as its main objective to ensure the well-being and growth of La Fortuna community, through the work execution of road infrastructure, environment, education, promotion of sport and culture, community beautification and strengthening of public safety; projects that are possible to run thanks to funds raised by the visit of each tourist to this natural space.

The Fortuna River waterfall is located in a biological reserve with an area of 210 acres of transition premontane tropical wet forest, part of the Arenal Volcano National Park and is located at 520 meters over the sea level, where there are sources of our mountains and the waters of the Fortuna River. Within this sector is the Cerro de los Perdidos, Placas de Mayo and Cerro Chato, which are based on rocky foundations of great geological value, causing in turn a lush and scenic beauty.

To observe this splendid 70 meters high waterfall, visitors must pass a path of approximately 530 steps, which offers greater security to its passage and comfortable areas for rest and hydration through a forest with native trees of the area. Once in front of the waterfall, you will find a spacious and comfortable vantage point from which you can freeze your memories using unique and previously unpublished photographs, and finally take a refreshing swim in the clear waters of the Fortuna River, with an only witness (the River Fortune waterfall).

VOLCANIC HOTSPRINGS! (LA FORTUNA COSTA RICA)

We had come to the Volcano by the town of La Fortuna and were about to enjoy the many volcanic hotsprings in the area. After traveling around Costa Rica for some time. Today we would also make it to the Pacific Ocean but were not very impressed by it. We had previously been to San Jose, Nauyaca waterfall, Jaco, Uvita, Manuel Antonio National Park, Monteverde, and Lake Arenal. On the list of places to go would also be the carribean side and the town of Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, Manzanillo, and more. In the coming video I will go back to Mexico also and the state of Chiapas, also some more places around the Puerto Vallarta area.
