LIVING UNDER $600 IN THAILAND | CHIANG MAI COST OF LIVING GUIDE

My most ambitious video, 'Living Under $600' is a cross between the ultimate guide to cost of living in Chiang Mai and a budget travel show.

When my viewers continually asked for more information on how much they could except to spend living here, I decided it would be much more powerful to show them rather than just give advice....

This video is both.

For a full breakdown of absolutely everything I spent during the 30 days as well as my top budgeting tips and framework for determining your own cost of living in Chiang Mai, check out the blog post at:

The cost of living in Chiang Mai, Thailand 2023. Retire in Thailand affordably - live in Chiang Mai!

Here is the real cost of living in Chiang Mai, Thailand in 2023. Are you planning to live in Chiang Mai? Are you wondering how to retire in Thailand? The cost to retire in Thailand? Here are the real figures about what it costs to live in Chiang Mai. If you are considering retiring in Thailand, you should consider Chiang Mai.

We don't just talk about prices. We literally show you. We take you on tours of apartments in the low, medium and high price range. We visit restaurants and see actual meals and what they cost. We discuss motorcycle and transportation costs. Our goal is to not only provide you with helpful information, but make it entertaining as well.

Chiang Mai is much less expensive than Bangkok, Phuket, and the islands, but is a beautiful city, close to nature with plentiful hikes and waterfalls. And few cities are as famous as Chiang Mai for its multitude of great coffee shops and restaurants. It is a foodie paradise, but at a low cost.

Just FYI, one bad thing about Chiang Mai to be aware of is the smokey season, or some call it the burning season. This is when farmers burn their crops to regenerate the soil (or to promote mushroom growth) all around the north: Laos, Myanmar, northern Thailand. It turns beautiful Chiang Mai into an unpleasant place (not so bad some years but terrible in 2003), usually. February to April. So you need to factor in that you might want to use these months to travel, either around Thailand (cheap flights and cheap places to stay, but you are maybe paying rent in Chiang Mai while you are gone, so a double expense while away), or to be your annual trip out of Asia or to your home country. Every city seems to have a bad aspect - crime, unrest, smog, high costs, et cetera - so we just figure the smokey season is the one bad thing about Chiang Mai, and we work around it in our lives. BTW, 2023 was a bad smokey year, but the years prior were not as bad. We home one day the generational practice of burning crops will lessen.

Part 2 will review health insurance, visas, and give a wrap-up of budget issues.

Thailand Cost of Living - 2024

In This video, travel expert, Jim Kellett talks with Chris from the Youtube channel, Retired Working For You. Chris is an expert in real estate, travel, and retirement in Thailand. They talk about the cost of living in Bangkok and around Thailand. Jim Kellett gives a tour and shows some specific examples of the cost of accommodations, transportation, and food.

Jim also gives examples of island living in Thailand. Living in a popular tourist destination like Phuket or Koh Samui will offer many amenities… but will fall in the higher cost-of-living range, while living on one of the less popular islands will offer a simpler lifestyle at a lower cost. And there are over 1,400 islands to choose from.

Living on a Thai island offers a laid-back lifestyle with stunning natural beauty, water activities, and a vibrant local culture. You can enjoy a sense of community, diverse cuisine, and, depending on the island, a choice between lively nightlife or a quiet laid-back atmosphere.

Living in Chiang Mai, Thailand, offers a unique blend of cultural richness, and a relaxed pace of life. Surrounded by mountains, the city provides a more temperate climate, and residents can enjoy a variety of traditional festivals, delicious local cuisine, and numerous outdoor activities. The cost of living is generally lower than in major cities, contributing to the city's appeal to digital nomads and retirees. Even in the popular part of town, you can find a good meal for $4 dollars or a massage for $7 dollars.

In Chiang Mai, many expats report being able to live comfortably for $1,200 per month, and nomads renting month-to-month, have reported living comfortably for $1,100 per month.

Cost Of Living Chiang Mai - Full Guide Updated (Copyright Free Content)

As somebody who has been living in Chiang Mai for over five years, it’s about time we discuss one of the most popular questions that revolve around the cost of living in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

One of the great things about the cost of living in Chiang Mai is that Chiang Mai has a lifestyle for every kind of person. Whether you are looking for a luxurious lifestyle or are looking to save a bunch of money, you will find it here easily in Chiang Mai.

Overall Cost Of Living Chiang Mai
The overall cost will depend on several factors heavily connected to a person’s individual lifestyle. Nonetheless, many expats live comfortably in Chiang Mai for less than $1000 (GBP – 720, AUD -1230 830 EUROS) per month. This includes all lifestyle costs, including rent, food, and transportation.

But as mentioned, the overall cost of living will depend on a person’s lifestyle. $1000 is a good target to aim for as this will include everything you will need, including some luxuries.

If you are looking to live more luxurious in Chiang Mai, then a budget of $1500 will be enough. This total cost is based upon a large two-bedroom apartment, renting a vehicle, and many other added extras such as insurance.

When looking at the overall costs of living in Chiang Mai, if you are looking to save money, this can also be done very quickly in Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai has won several awards over the last few years, and it the cheapest city in Thailand.

Living cost north Thailand Chiang Mai-

How Much Is Rent In Chiang Mai
Rent has always been very cheap in Chiang Mai, but during the recent pandemic, prices dropped even further. A small one-bedroom condominium unit can be purchased for around 7K-8K Thai baht. A larger rental property for a large family can be purchased for around 12K-15K Thai baht (Prices are based on a monthly rate).

One of the great things about living in Chiang Mai is that there are many highways connected to large condominiums and apartments, which means it takes next to no time to travel around the city.

Rent Costs Chiang Mai

Fitness & Leisure Chiang Mai
There are many different options for fitness around the city. If you are on a budget, one of the great things about living in Chiang Mai is that they often have weekly free events such as yoga and dancing, which is conducted in the nimman area of the city (same area as Jetts gym).

Jetts gym, for instance, has a total monthly price of 1500 Thai baht; however, this is one of the most expensive gyms in the area. There are much cheaper options and even free outside gyms in parks around the city.

Leisure activities can range in price but depend on the level of tourism. During COVID-19, prices for a lot of leisure activities dropped dramatically. For example, a one-hour painting class was reaching 600 baht before the impact of covid, and now classes are around 250.

Laundry prices in Chiang Mai are the cheapest I’ve ever come across. There is a service called Chiang Mai laundry, which picks up your clothes, washes them, and irons ready to be dropped off the next day, which is an incredibly low rate. Many businesses are offering a similar service for a similar price.

Every two weeks I give them a small suitcase of washing and the total price is around 500 baht. They base their price on the weight and not the number of items meaning that it’s a much cheaper service than over laundry services such as ones in Bangkok.

Cost Of Living Chiang Mai
Transportation Costs
There are several options for transportation in Chiang Mai. One of the most popular is to rent a motorcycle which is often extremely easy to do on sites such as Facebook.

Grab is another option which is the Uber of Thailand. Whatever you need, whether that is a restaurant delivery, An SUV, an electric bike, etc., you will be able to find it on grab easily. grab is best on longer journeys. A one-mile journey can cost around 70 to 80 baht depending on the time of day, but a five-mile journey can cost around 200 baht (prices vary).

How Much Money Do You Need To Live In Chaing Mai?
Cost Of Living Chiang Mai – Chiang Mai is the cheapest area in Thailand that includes a high-quality standard of living. In other words, you will be able to find a much cheaper area, but it will not include the benefits that the city of Chiang Mai offers.

Chiang Mai has a slightly different vibe to the rest of Thailand. It is more of a relaxed and independent area. Some who have been used to living in urban areas such as Bangkok have stated that it is slower, but this is expected.

If you are trying to save a lot of money, you will live in Chiang Mai for much less than $1000. Some claim that it is possible to live on 600 to $700.00 a month in Chiang Mai, and this is correct, but there will be some lifestyle sacrifices to take into account.

Cost of Living in Chiang Mai - Living Cheap in Thailand

I wrote an article on my blog back in May titled 'How Much Do Things Cost in Thailand?'

In the post, I gave a breakdown, between the cost of living in the north of Thailand and the cost of living in the South of Thailand.

You can read the full article here:

I wanted to revisit the topic, as although it has been done to death and people have covered it extensively. It never hurts to get different perspectives.

I also wanted to recommend the website Numbeo to anyone who hasn't already heard of it.

It's a cost of living calculator where you can compare the prices in Chiang Mai to any other city in the world, or any other city in Thailand, and get a direct comparison.
