5 things I took for granted in Cuba (Havana)

Hello World!
I'm a Canadian who's lived in Havana, Cuba on and off for the past 5 years.
I filmed this video while on my 2nd consecutive month living in Havana, whilst I was probably feeling a little home sick for the little comforts of home such as:
1. Running Water
2. Hot Water
3. Toilet Paper
4. Flushable Toilets
5. Toilet seats,
vegetables,
washing machines,
moskito screens,
tampons,
etc.
I have never thought myself to be a princess. But boy did I learn that anyone who comes from a developped country has LOTS to learn from the developping ones.
So here is a comical video of the 5 things I took for granted in Cuba, expressing the silver lining gratitude that I have and want to share with the world.

Havana, Cuba: 6 Things I Hated about my visit.

On a recent trip to Havana I made a list of things I loved and hated about vacationing in Havana... this video lists out the things I hated and that tourists should be aware of before they go. To see the companion video, 8 THINGS I LOVED ABOUT HAVANA, Cuba, click the following link:

0:00 Intro
0:25 Overview
0:53 Accommodations
2:21 Money Situation
4:19 Internet
5:08 Transportation
6:15 Amenities
8:10 Urban Blight
8:25 Surprisingly expensive
9:19 What's the problem - Is it Communism?
10:45 Would I come back?

Recently, I embarked on a five-day journey to Havana, Cuba, with my wife, and despite the smiles you see here in front of the Capitol building, there were aspects of the trip that left me less than thrilled. While I previously shared the highlights in a video about things we loved in Havana, this one takes a more critical look at some issues tourists, especially Americans, should be aware of before venturing to Cuba.

Let's start with accommodations – an essential aspect of any trip. I booked in advance through hotels.com, a platform I frequently use with my extensive travels. We stayed in three different rooms during our time in Cuba, one of which boasted an impressive 9.4 rating on hotels.com. However, the reality didn't quite match the rating. While none of the places were terrible, they also weren't truly luxurious. The bed wasn't as comfortable as expected, and there were issues with a musky smell and a problematic toilet. It seems there's a scarcity of truly high-end accommodations in Havana, with only a few boutique options and one Campinski hotel, a German luxury brand, that comes at a steep price.

Now, let's talk about the money situation, especially crucial for American travelers. In Cuba, credit cards and ATMs won't work anywhere – not at restaurants, banks, or ATMs. You must bring cash, and upon exchange, there's a 10% cut, reducing $1,000 to $900 instantly. The local currency, the CUC, operates at a one-to-one exchange rate with the American dollar after the 10% cut. While there is a local currency, it's not commonly used by tourists. Additionally, if you run out of cash, the only way for an American to get more is to have it wired by a family member to the American Embassy in Havana. The process involves significant hassle, emphasizing the importance of bringing enough cash.

Internet access in Cuba is another challenge. While some hotels offer limited Wi-Fi in the lobby, it's not available in rooms. Around the city, Wi-Fi spots require purchasing cards for access, and the speed is mediocre, akin to 2G or 3G. While some may appreciate the break from constant connectivity, for those with obligations or teenagers, it poses challenges. The absence of data means no access to essential travel tools like Google Maps, Uber, or TripAdvisor.

A significant drawback is the lack of amenities readily available in other parts of the world. Convenience stores are virtually nonexistent, making it challenging to find simple items. During my search for a Coca-Cola and toenail clippers, I encountered resistance and a lack of accessibility. The trade-off between a less developed destination and affordability doesn't quite hold in Havana – prices are surprisingly high. Taxi rides, massages, and dinners can easily rival or exceed prices in the States or Europe, making it less of a budget-friendly destination.

Addressing the urban blight in Havana, it's unfortunate to witness rundown areas even in prominent locations like the Prado Boulevard. Dumpsters emitting strong odors next to main museums reflect the need for renovation and maintenance. While urban decay is not unique to Havana, it detracts from the city's potential allure.

Cuba's challenges are often attributed to communism or the American embargo. While communism has hindered the private sector's growth, other communist countries seem to fare better economically. The Cuban people often cite the American embargo as a significant impediment, a sentiment rooted in national pride. However, it's essential to recognize Cuba as a Latin American country facing the struggles typical of developing nations in the region.

In conclusion, while Havana possesses beautiful beaches, captivating architecture, and extraordinary classic cars, it comes with its set of challenges. The lack of connectivity, limited amenities, and high costs make it a less enticing destination for those seeking both comfort and adventure. While I appreciated the opportunity to visit, I remain uncertain about returning anytime soon, as the overall experience didn't align with the expectations of a relaxing and luxurious vacation.

Is Havana, Cuba Worth Visiting? (The answer may surprise you) | Drifter Throwbacks | ????????

Welcome to Cuba's bustling capital of Havana! I dove headfirst into a full day of sightseeing to enjoy every aspect of the country's beating heart, and was quick to fall in love with the city and everything it has to offer.

Is it worth visiting? YES! Very much so, and it's a shame that it has been closed off from American travelers for so long. What I thought would be the drab, oppressive communist regime that the media illustrates was instead a warm, friendly, inviting nation with a ton to see and do. Were there problems? Sure - supply and resources are limited here. But, it was well worth the adventure, all politics aside.

During my day in Havana, I wandered through its charming plazas, admired its stunning forts, and imbibed on the country's most famous rum, soaking up its vibes. Wandering the streets here is an absolute pleasure, with Latin beats booming on loudspeakers, people dancing in the streets, historic colonial buildings around every corner, and more color than most cities could ever offer. Havana is incredible, and if you ever have the chance to go, just go! - you won't be disappointed.

I hope you're all enjoying these DRIFTER THROWBACKS while I work on bringing you newer content in the new year!
