Beautiful Culture of Wakhan Afghanistan

The Wakhi people are an ethnic group who primarily live in the Wakhan Corridor, a mountainous region in northeastern Afghanistan, northwestern Pakistan, and southeastern Tajikistan. The Wakhi culture is rich and fascinating, with a unique set of customs and traditions that have been preserved for generations.

One of the most notable aspects of Wakhi culture is their love for music and dance. The Wakhi people have a rich tradition of music, with many different instruments such as the rubab, the daf, and the surnai being used in their music. The Wakhi dance is also a vibrant and colorful expression of their culture, with a variety of traditional dances being performed on special occasions and celebrations.

Another aspect of Wakhi culture that is particularly noteworthy is their emphasis on hospitality. The Wakhi people are known for their warm and welcoming nature, and visitors to their homes are always treated with great respect and kindness. This hospitality extends to their food as well, with traditional Wakhi dishes such as shapik and laghman being prepared with great care and shared with guests.

Tajikistan: From the Wakhan Valley onto the Pamir Highway until Kyrgyzstan | The Long Road Ep. 44

On the Wakhan Valley we headed towards the Pamir Highway until we reached Kyrgyzstan. The landscape was epic as usual.

A big thank you to everybody who let me awkwardly film them :)

Filmed handheld with the Panasonic G80/G81/G85 and the iPhone 6.

The long Road (TlR) is a journey from Germany all the way to Nepal, through the middle east, following the old silk road, China and South-East Asia. The whole journey will be overland (no planes, UFOs or portals) and put together into short videos on this channel :)

Greetings,
Georg

Cycle Touring the Pamirs: Khorog to Osh via the Wakhan Corridor

Join me on my epic journey from Khorog to Osh via the Wakhan Corridor.
We will follow the border of Tajikistan and Afghanistan for another 250+kms and you'll get to hear my opinion about the safety in the area.
We will camp on top of the highest pass in the Pamirs: The Ak-Baital Pass at 4,655m/15,272' high!
Then we will take in one of the most beautiful areas of the Pamirs in my opinion: The Kara-Kul Lake area.
After that, we will meet a few other cyclists on our way into Kyrgyzstan and eventually I will reunite with an old cyclist friend in Osh!
Hope you enjoy!

Afghanistan´s Secret Peaks - trailer

a film about the other Afghanistan, a diverse country with different landscapes, people, languages and culture - after ore than 30 years of war there still is the other Afghanistan, the friendly and hospitable Afghanistan:
We set off on an expedition with the goal to traverse the complete Wakhan Corridor from West to East, past Lake Chaqmaqtin to explore side valleys of the Ak Su range of the Little Pamir and try to ascend one of those nameless and unclimbed giants of rock and ice.
Wakhan Corridor is one of the most isolated high plateaus of the Pamirs and due to this isolation it remains to be one of the few places on earth that offers a fascinating combination of untouched nature, pristine culture of Wakhi and Kyrgyz Pamir nomads, unexplored valleys and unclimbed peaks.
Situated in the province of Badakhshan, Wakhan is the most north-eastern tip of Afghanistan and borders to Tajikistan, China and Pakistan. It forms a narrow corridor with a length of 300km and a width of just 17 km at its narrowest point and just 60 km at its widest point.
The complete corridor is embraced by mighty mountain ranges: by the Hindukush, the Great Pamir, the Karakorum as well as the Little Pamir, that reaches as far as to the Chinese border.
And exactly here we witness the unspoilt culture of the last Pamir Nomads, living their life above 4.000m all year around. A hard life but free in the way of the traditions of their ancestors.

The Kyrgyz of the Pamirs are turkic-nomadic people, roaming through Tajikistan, China and Afghanistan with their herds of sheep, goat and yaks since centuries, according to the seasons for summer and winter camps and best grazing grounds. All this came to a sudden end during the Great Game in the 19th century when the imperial powers of Russia and Great Britain where close to collide in Afghanistan in their race of worldwide expansion. To avoid a military conflict, they decided on an arbitrary buffer zone according to the Durand Line between colonial India now Pakistan and tsaristic Russia now Tajikistan, which led to today’s borders of Wakhan Corridor.

With the rise of the communist Soviet Union, the pressure for integration and settlement by force rose on the nomadic Kyrgyz, who preferred their independence and fled into the Afghan Pamir. The upcoming communism in China sealed the last free border. The freedom loving Kyrgyz were suddenly locked up between the world powers on the roof of the world - Wakhan Corridor. From now on the nomads were completely isolated from the outer world and their cross border migrations were denied. The Kyrgyz of the Pamirs were all of a sudden prisoners of the barren Wakhan high plateau, the last refuge for a free nomadic living according to the traditions of their elders.

Trek Afghanistan

The Pamir Mountain range of Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor is a peaceful and extremely hard-to-reach part of the world where few have travelled and little has changed in a thousand years. It's home to the Wakhi and Kyrgyz nomads who live a traditional way of life on the outer limits of human habitation. They survive the lengthy and brutal winter thanks to their herds of yaks and sheep that provide them with milk and cheese, wool for warmth and dung to fuel their fires. In summer, they welcome traders into their yurt homes and -- more recently -- intrepid tourists who hire pack animals to explore the region.

Visit the Wakhan Corridor

A short film of our trip to the Wakhan Corridor in north east Afghanistan.

Pamir to Karakoram - cycling the world's highest roads

Follow us on a journey across the roof of the world - the Pamir and Karakoram Highways. Eight weeks, two bicycles and four largely unexplored countries, Tadjikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in western China and Pakistan. An adventure into the most remote and rugged landscapes on our planet. Discover yaks, 8000m peaks, frozen lakes and the world’s friendliest people. Battling snow, altitude and fatigue this trip was tough enough without the added consideration of film-making. Completed in total autonomy this film captures the very essence of why we travel - an incredible feat of filmography. Adventure cycling at it’s finest.

The Legend Of The Issyk Kul Lake's Lost Treasures

There are many legends surrounding this extraordinary lake in Kyrgyzstan – the sunken city of “Lyesh”, the “tears of the snow leopard” that lend the water its salinity, and finally about the name of the lake itself: Issyk Kul. The name means “hot lake”, because despite being at an altitude of over 1,600 meters it never freezes, not even in the coldest of winters; a remarkable natural phenomenon.

In this episode of Lakes on the Roof of the World we climb on treacherous paths to the mountain villages of the Terskey-Alatau range and discover the traditional way of life of the Kyrgyz shepherds, but above all, we learn about the life of the people living with and by Lake Issyk Kul.
