Kyrgyzstan Food | Eating our favorite Kyrgyz cuisine in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan travel food transcript:

Alright, hello hello guys. We are back in Bishkek (Бишке́к) and today is actually our last day in Kyrgyzstan (Киргизия) and we can't leave the country without making a Kyrgyz food video.

So where are we off to? Let's see if you remember the name. I've been calling it the wrong thing probably like 10 times in a row.

We are off to Arzu (Арзу). Arzu!

But anyways um a few of the dishes have arrived. And we got some Borsok (боорсок) and these are little fried pieces of dough that are fried in oil and we had these a lot when we were doing our treks and staying in yurt camps.

Next up one of the appetizers we got is Samsa (самса) and before I talk about this I have to say I'm slightly sad because I had a big dream of having. A food dream. A food dream I had a big dream of having pumpkin manti (мантуу) which is like the Kyrgyz kind of dumplings.

And to wash it all down because it is really hot outside and just because well I like the local beer here. I've got some Arpa and let's give that a try.

So our two mains are here. And if you take a look I ordered the Laghman (лағмон) and I've been having a lot of Lagman (лағмон) since we've been here in Kyrgyzstan but usually in soup form. You can get like noodles with broth and this time around I ordered the fried version.

And now time for your main. Yeah, so I'm having Plov (палоо) or sometimes it is also called Pilaf (палоо) and this is probably one of the most common foods found throughout Central Asia. Like you will find Plov in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan. Basically in this whole region it is very popular and every country has their own unique twist to it.

Like if you're having the next thing that we're getting we're getting Shashlik (шашлы́к). The skewered meat. So this is a perfect compliment for something like that.

And the star of the show has arrived. Alright, so this is the last one. We ordered Shashlyk (шашлы́к) which is a skewered meat.

And we got the lamb. Ooh.

And it came covered in onions and dill.

And when I thought about coming back to Kyrgyzstan the one must food that I had to have again was the Shashlyk. That is my favorite food in Kyrgyzstan for sure.

Anyways, on to that time price point. So that came to 930 Som which currently is just over $13 US dollars. Like pretty insane value. So this is like a popular restaurant. It is a bit fancier here but still it was really affordable.

I highly highly recommend Arzu (Арзу). The food is fantastic, the prices are just right and the service is great. So definitely come here if you're in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (Кыргызстан).

Kyrgyzstan in a week

This video tells the story of the 7-day trip we took through northeast Kyrgyzstan.

When I told my friends that I had planned a trip to Kyrgyzstan, the most common answer was Kyrgyz what?
And I repeated Kyrgyzstan!

Our travel plan was based on the experience of our dear guide and friend, Aman from the company Kyrgyz Riders, who I strongly advise if you want to travel to this country.

KYRGYZ RIDERS Contacts:
Site:
Phone: +996 558 033 880
email address: kyrgyzriders@gmail.com

Located in Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan is bordered by Kazakhstan to the northwest and north, by China to the east and south, and by Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to the south and west. Most of Kyrgyzstan's borders run along mountain crests. Formerly a constituent republic of the U.S.S.R., Kyrgyzstan declared its independence on August 31, 1991. The capital is Bishkek.

Kyrgyzstan is an amazing, uncommon travel destination. With an incredible display of rivers, waterfalls, and nearly 2,000 lakes, its beautiful mountainous landscape has provided the setting for over 2,000 years of history. We spent 10 days in Kyrgyzstan and explored many of its most famous places.

So our travel plan was to explore the following places in 7 days: Jalgyz-Karagay pass, Song-Kol lake, Tash-Rabat, Chatyr-Kol Lake, Kel-Suu lake, KochKor Village, Eagle Hunting Experience, The Skazka Canyon, Jetty-Oguz red mountains, Karakol village, and Grigorievka gorge.

Eating Kyrgyzstan: Traditional Kyrgyz food in Bishkek

During one of our last days in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan we revisited one of our favorite restaurants in the city to eat traditional Kyrgyz food. Food in Kyrgyzstan is closely related to that of Kazakh cuisine and we ordered all of our favorites including Plov, Shashlik, Manti, Lagman & Kymyz. Traditional Kyrgzy food revolves heavily around horse meat, mutton and beef along with a heavy dose of dairy products influenced by its historically nomadic culture. Below you'll find more information about the specific dishes.

Plov (плов) – Also known as pilaf or paloo, this is a mixed rice dish that features pieces of meat (usually mutton, beef, or chicken) and shredded carrots. It is cooked in a cast-iron cauldron and it is delicious.

Shashlik (шашлы́к): shashlyk (meaning skewered meat) was originally made of lamb. Nowadays it is also made of pork or beef depending on local preferences and religious observances. The skewers are either threaded with meat only, or with alternating pieces of meat, fat, and vegetables, such as bell pepper, onion, mushroom and tomato.

Manti (манты) – These are steamed dumplings filled with ground meat and onions. You can also get vegetarian ones filled with pumpkin or potatoes.

Samsa (самсы) – This is a popular street snack. Picture a flaky pastry pocket stuffed with ingredients which include: chicken, cheese, cabbage, beef, or other fillings.

Lagman (лагман) – Laghman is a noodle dish which can be served as a soup or fried, and it features chopped peppers with a spicy vinegar sauce.

Ashlyam fu (Ашлям фу) – This is a cold and spicy soup that has meat, veggies, cold noodles and starchy noodles.

Besh barmak (бешбармак) – The name of this dish translates to ‘five fingers’ because it is so tasty it is meant to be eaten with your whole hand. It is a plate of steamed noodles and onions with meat, which can be lamb or horse.

Kymyz (кумыс) – Can I offer you a glass of fermented mare’s milk? It tastes nothing like what you’d imagine – it’s salty, fizzy and it kind of reminded me of Korean makgeolli – so give it a try.

Eating Kyrgyzstan: Traditional Kyrgyz food in Bishkek Travel Video Transcript:

So it is lunchtime here in Bishkek (Бишкек), Kyrgyzstan (Киргизия) and today we are going to be having a feast. We are going to be sampling all of the traditional dishes that we've been eating over the last three weeks because that is how long we've been traveling in the country. So we're ordering a big spread. This is probably enough food for like five or six people but Sam and I are going to try and eat it all and just showcase what Central Asian cuisine is all about. So we hope you enjoy.

So we're almost done the meal. Any particular favorites?

So stuffed.

Um, the shashlik (шашлы́к) was amazing. That was so so good. It was so juicy and they don't really put a lot of spices on the beef but it just has like that natural flavor so that was really nice. It was smokey, tender flavor. Love that. It was good. And also the rice. I'm usually not a very big fan of rice but it was really good. It was like wild brown rice so that was really tasty.

Yeah, those are two of my favorites as well. And I'm going to add that I really like the manti (манты). The pumpkin dumplings. Of course. Dumplings.

So that wraps up our feast of feasts. It was an amazing like traditional Kyrgyz meal. We ordered so much food that we're actually taking a lot of it home. This is probably enough either for three or four people and in terms of the price it came to one thousand two hundred Som which right now is seventeen US dollars. So that was incredible value. I mean we got three different kinds of drinks, we got tea, we got a liter of Pepsi, we got a liter of mare's milk plus all of that food that we showed you including the bread, the dumplings, the meat, the rice, the noodles. So you can come here and have an epic feast and it is not going to cost you a fortune.

Glamping in Kyrgyzstan | Luxury Yurt Tour staying at Sumpara Chunkurchak travel video transcript:

Well good morning. Today we are coming to you from Supara Chunkurchak and we are currently doing a luxury yurt stay which is pretty nice because we've been doing a lot of outdoorsy stuff so it is nice to kind of like pamper ourselves. Yeah. As our trip winds down.

Basically right at the end of our trip. And yeah we're just relaxing here. We have a amazing views of the mountains. Yes, mountains, forests. We've just been relaxing this morning and now it is time for breakfast.

Yeah, and after breakfast we'll be giving you a tour of the whole property so stay tuned for that.

So off to breakfast we go and we have a whole bunch of yurts here that we're walking past. We're staying in number five but they have so many. Look. More up there.

So where are we headed Sam? We are heading to the Mother Station. Check out that. That is the Mother Yurt. The Mother Ship.
Breakfast time. Breakfast. So I think I'm going to grab some lovely spread. Going in for fruit first. Nuts. Jams.

So as you can see I'm out on a bit of a solo mission this morning. I'm going to be hiking by myself. Audrey is back at the yurt doing a little bit of work but man it is just such a nice day outside that I couldn't stay in. I should be doing a little bit of work myself but I've just decided to go out, do a little hike and see if I can get some really awesome views of the mountains off in the distance.

Well, that was an extremely successful hike and I would say drone flight. My main goal was to get the drone over that hill with a nice kind of tree and mountain reveal and I think I was able to do that.

And finally. And finally we've made it inside the yurt. I had to change because it got so hot. Like seriously summer is here. But anyways you are inside the yurt. This is like the little entrance.

We've got like a little desk area where we've just thrown all of our computer stuff and camera gear.

And then there is some paintings and other things along here. Here is another one that is kind of cool.

Very representative of Kyrgyzstan here. We have the yurts and we have the mountains in the background.

And it would be nuts absolutely nuts if I didn't show you guys the views from here. I know the views are amazing.

Absolutely incredible. We have floor to ceiling windows and you can see the mountains. The forest.

It is a little overcast. Earlier in the morning it was man the views were a lot more spectacular but it is still incredible.

Yeah, and oh wait you know what we didn't show? What? We didn't show the bathroom.

I think this is the first yurt where we've had on own private bathroom. I know. This is a fancy yurt. That is how you know it is luxury yurt. We are this is like a glamping yurt or something.

Yurt Tour in Kyrgyzstan by Issyk-Kul Lake

Come join us for a yurt tour in Kyrgyzstan by Issyk-Kul Lake as we stay overnight in Kyrgyz yurt at Bel Tam Yurt Camp located on the outskirts of Bokonbayevo. When traveling to Kyrgyzstan one of the ultimate experiences you can have as an adventure traveler is to experience living in a yurt. You'll have an opportunity to do this on overnight trekking or hiking experiences in Kyrgyzstan but you also can experience an overnight stay in Kyrgyz yurt at a camp.

This particular yurt camp was our home for four nights as we used it as a base to explore in and around Issyk Kul Lake and attractions nearby Bokonbayevo. Our yurt tour gives you a tour of inside of our yurt, the camp area, the showers and toilets at the yurt camp, the dining communal area and several overhead drone shots of the yurts. We highly recommend yurt camping and the place we stayed at was fantastic. You'll notice the location below:

So right now we're staying at the Bel Tam Yurt Camp and we're on the shores of Issyk-Kul Lake and we're just outside of Bokonbayevo. That is the name of the town. So now that you know where we are let's actually go inside the yurt. Come along.

And we are what?

We are the mountain goat. There are no numbers for the yurts just cool drawings. So we got the mountain goat at the very end of the property so come on in.

These wooden doors that we close at night. So two sets of doors and now come on in. There is no electricity in here so it is a little bit dark but follow me.

So this is it. You are inside our yurt and technically this yurt sleeps three people but it is just the two of us in here. Although our suitcases have exploded so it looks really messy and we've actually taken over the three beds.

So if you take a look at the ground it is basically carpets. So they've put down a sheet of plastic so that we're not like trailing in sand and dirt. Yeah.

And that it is just a whole bunch of carpets on top. That plastic is right there. Yeah.

And then for our beds we have mattresses. Yes. With lots duvets but we have slept in yurts where you don't get a mattress it is just like blankets and mats. Yep. So this is pretty comfortable. No, this is really nice.

Yeah, it is really nice to have a mattress like this. And I just love how colorful it is. I know. It is wonderful. Like check it out.

Look at even up top here. It is so cool. Yeah.

And I don't know if you've mentioned this but we've been getting the best sleeps here. Oh my gosh yes. So like I mentioned there is no electricity we just have a few candles that we light at night. Yeah.

So that means we get to bed. Show the other one that has all of the wax. That has the melted wax. The wax is running off. Look at that.

So we've been laying that at night. Yeah, and then as soon as we're ready to sleep we blow it out and it is basically pitch black until the morning but the nice thing is that we're here in June meaning that like it is light out by five in the morning. Yes.

And it stays light out until eight or eight thirty at night?

So alright and as you may have noticed there is no toilet in here so we're going to give you a tour of the rest of the camp so follow me out.

Alright, so before we take you to the bathrooms we're actually going to show you the dining yurt because that is on the way.

And that is an even bigger yurt and everyone gathers here for breakfast, lunch and dinner and we all eat together.

And but I would really recommend it if you're coming all the way to Kyrgyzstan you need to stay in a yurt.

Kyrgyzstan Travel: Horse Trekking and Yurt Stay adventure to Song Köl

Prior to the World Nomad Games we had a great introduction to the country of Kyrgyzstan through an adventurous several day horse-trekking journey where we stayed overnight in yurts en route to Song Kol. The highlight for us both was the rugged scenery along the way in tandem with the getting to experience traditional Kyrgyz culture in a yurt at night where we had traditional food and then slept inside.

Kyrgyzstan Travel: Horse Trekking and Yurt Stay adventure to Song Köl Travel Video Transcript:

Hey guys we're in Kyrgyzstan. Yeah, new country for both of us so that is pretty exciting. First time in Central Asia so we are stoked to be here. Yeah and over the next few days we are going to be horse-trekking in Song Köl so we're going to take you along but before we get there we're making a little stop. First up Burana Tower right here. So we're going to climb to the top.

The first day of our tour was mostly a travel day, so we just enjoyed the scenery, caught up on sleep, and experienced our first Kyrgyz traffic jam. We also go our first taste of Kyrgyz food with a massive lunch featuring all types of spreads and dishes.

From there, we did a short hike in the outskirts of Kochkor and then checked into our guesthouse for the night.

(Traditional music of Kyrgyzstan)

So good morning from Kochkor. We did a home stay here last night which was a lot of fun. We got to watch a music performance and eat amazing food. So we're just going to enjoy breakfast now and then go horse-trekking. And we're wearing our cool hats. Yeah, so can't wait to do that. Let's get started.

Alright so we just arrived at the first camp. We've had lunch and now we're going to pick out a horse and begin the trek. Yeah!

Okay so it is time for a little update. How are you feeling?

Well, I've been getting tenderized on that horse. Yeah. Like we've been riding for over three hours now and after I got off of it I could barely stand up. Like I almost collapsed. I almost fell. Obviously we are not trained at doing this but it has been a lot of fun. The scenery has been awesome, the weather has really cooperated so this is over the halfway mark and we're really looking forward to reaching the Yurt for supper.

So we made a new friend and we've arrived at camp. We've arrived at last. So we're at our yurt and we're going to eat dinner. We're getting ready for dinner and this guy is our entertainment for the night.

So it is now bedtime. The boys are in one yurt and the girls are in the other and this is what it looks like.

Little tour. There we go. And we have loads of blankets because it is freezing cold tonight.

Good morning. I don't know about you but I slept really well. We were in separate tents. Yeah, it was men only and women only. And it was so cold that you know we just bundled up in these big thick blankets and I think everyone just was like out like a rock. Past out right away.

And we went to bed early. Yeah because the horse riding took a lot out of us and we had a nice big meal and then a little bit to drink and then just it was fantastic. So this is the start of day two. So we're going to be riding again about five hours today. I'm feeling pretty sore so we'll see how that goes. But it should be fun like the landscapes have been amazing all the way. And the weather has been awesome too so I think we're going to have another really good day. Mmmhmmm. Let's do this.

Alright welcome to MTV cribs the yurt edition. Yurt edition. So we're going to show you what is going on in here. Alright. This is like the men's sleeping quarters last night so we were all sleeping here. Looks pretty messy. It is properly messy. We all just woke up. We're just getting ready for breakfast and this was the awesome stuff we had last night. We had some vodka.

On our second afternoon of trekking we made it to Song Kol, our final destination. We arrived shortly before sunset, so after dropping off our packs and warming up with tea, we made our way down to the water to watch the sun work its magic.

So we finally made it. We arrived. So it is day two. It is the end of our horse-trek and this is Song Kol. Viola!
