Satara Rest Camp In The Kruger National Park - Walk Through, Accommodation, Shop & More

Satara Rest Camp, situated in the central Kruger National Park, is the second largest Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park, and it is very popular with South Africans and tourists alike. This is big cat country, and many big cat lovers stay at Satara so they can get an early morning start to look for Lion, Leopard and Cheetah.

Satara Rest Camp is rich in bird life, especially in the summer months. Bird calls can be heard throughout the day, despite how busy this camp is. Satara Rest Camp is approximately half way between Tshokwane Picnic Spot and Olifants Rest Camp, and is in the heart of the Kruger National Park.

There are some fascinating animals that come out after dark in Satara, including the resident African Wild Cat, Honey Badger, Genet and Civet. Scops Owls and Nightjars can be heard, while Hyena patrol the fence.

We filmed all areas of Satara Rest Camp so you know what to expect, or just if you want to reminisce because you are missing the Kruger National Park. In the background you can hear bird calls that are commonly heard in Satara Rest Camp.

Are you wondering whether you should stay in Satara rest camp in the Kruger National Park? In this video I share my thoughts on this extremely popular rest camp, situated in the south-eastern tip of the Kruger National Park.

Satara is located in a great area for game viewing and it's also very family friendly, with a large swimming pool and jungle gym, as well as a big shop, restaurant and place to order fast food. I doesn't, however, have a nice view like some of the other camps, because the terrain here is very flat and it doesn't overlook a river.

The campsite, however, is extremely popular - especially the stands along the fence line, from where campers stand a chance of seeing elephants, buffalo and other large game. Spotted hyenas also walk up and down the fence every evening, but please do not feed them, because if they become problem animals, park officials will have to put them down.

Satara Rest Camp Review In the Kruger National Park Park

Kruger National Park is not only one of the world's biggest nature preserves but also one of the most popular and famous as well. There is a lot to know but what I think is very important is perspective and this is what this video will give you, what you must know and see....

There are beautiful animals to be seen here, in one day you could see all the animals but there are a lot of people and cars meaning there could be 100 cars on a sighting.

Kruger is special to me as I have spent so much time there and in this video, you will see the contradiction of beautiful animals but a lot of people and cars.

S1 – Ep 433 – Satara Rest Camp!

Our visit to Satara Rest Camp in Kruger National Park was a delightful adventure. The journey from Balule Satellite Camp to Satara was filled with excitement as we encountered an abundance of wildlife along the scenic S39 route, taking a pause at Ratel Pan and the Ratel Pan Bird Hide. Upon reaching Satara, we were surprised to find the entrance gate had been moved from its original position. A bustling atmosphere could be felt in camp and we excitedly and successfully pitched our tent and embarked on another thrilling game drive. Returning to camp, we savoured a delightful evening meal. Our good fortune continued when an African wildcat paid us a surprise visit before bedtime. Satara proved to be a fantastic and memorable camping and wildlife experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #krugernationalpark #satara #balule

Satara Rest Camp Review Kruger National Park

Satara is the 2nd largest rest camp in the Kruger National Park and is located at the northern end of the southern portion of the park. It's at the centre of big cat country, with large herds of antelope and zebra attracting the larger predators. Game viewing is generally considered to be better in the south, in large part because the thick mopane forests that dominate the north are missing, this area is considerably more open.

To be honest, this was our least favourite camp, it's a bit run down, and there appears to be a general lack of enthusiasm to provide a proper service to paying guests. One gets the feeling that they are regarded as something of a. nuisance to be endured.

Which is a pity, because it's a camp with massive potential, just by virtue of it's location. But still a worthwhile stopover on any overlanding Africa safari.

Kruger National Park Day Trip | Orpen Gate to Satara Rest Camp

The Kruger National Park is a popular overlanding destination in South Africa, ideal for day trip visitors with easy access from several entrance gates from the far North to the extreme South of the park. While there are benefits to staying in the park, mainly early access to the best game viewing, and the pure pleasure of hearing the sounds of Africa from the the comfort of your tent or chalet at night. But even the most reasonably priced accommodation options come at a price, while the numerous private lodges and camp sites outside the park itself offer a reasonably priced alternative.

Hoedspruit and Hazyview are blessed with plenty of accommodation options, from luxury to budget, and are both located close to access gates. Hoedspruit is a little over 30km from Orpen gate and Hazyview is even closer to Phabeni gate at a little under 15km.

This trip report is from our visit in November 2020 and covers 2 different day trips in the Southern part of the park. It was somewhat overcast with some rain about which kept things cool and the wildlife came out to play. Buffalo, giraffe, zebra and even rare African wild dogs. We thought that lions weren't going to be on the agenda, but a whole pride showed themselves right next to the road at the end of our first day. The pride included at least 2 of the fairly rare white lions, such a privilege.

In this video I share my thoughts on Orpen rest camp in the Kruger National Park, as well as its two sister camps, Tamboti tented camp and Maroela campsite. I also tell you what animals you can expect to see in the area and what routes I recommend for game drives around Orpen, Tamboti and Maroela.

Although game viewing around Orpen is fantastic, I do find the area to be a little bit too busy for my liking, with frequent traffic jams forming early in the morning on the H7 tar road. I'm also not a big fan of driving east into the sun first thing in the morning, which is a slight problem from Orpen. The three camps, however - Orpen, Tamboti and Maroela - are lovely to stay at and well worth a visit if you're planning a trip to the Kruger National Park!

Check out the video on my TOP TEN GAME VIEWING TIPS IN KRUGER here:

Are you wondering whether you should stay in Skukuza rest camp in the Kruger National Park? In this video I share my thoughts on this large, busy camp situated in the far south of the park.

Skukuza is the headquarters of the park and thus it feels more like a town that it does a rest camp. Unfortunately it can become extremely busy and noisy, especially during the school holidays and even over weekends when loads of day visitors flood here.

Personally, the camp is way too cramped for me! Not only are there too many tightly-spaced rondawels and chalets, but the campsite stands are also took small and close to each other. If I had to book one accommodation type, it would be the riverside bungalows that overlook the Sabie River.

Speaking of which - the view over the river is probably my favourite thing about Skukuza. I do like having a bite and a drink on the deck overlooking the Sabie River, while searching for hippos in the water below and green pigeons in the sycamore fig trees above. In fact, Skukuza is one of the best camps for bird watching in the entire park! A stroll through camp can is usually rewarded with sightings of white-browed robin-chats, purple-crested turacos and much more!

Other camp facilities in Skukuza include two hotels (including one on the old railway that crossed the river), a conference centre, a library and museum, a filling station, a massive shop, multiple restaurants and a fast food area, two swimming pools and a spa and even a bank and a post office.
