Trying TUNISIAN food! Tunis local food and STREET FOOD tour! الغذاء التونسي

We spent two days in Tunisia's capital of Tunis eating amazing Tunisian food and meeting super friendly locals - some let us sample their food, some gave us free makroudhs (Tunisian pastries) and some shared a giant feast with us while teaching us about Tunisian culture! As you can probably tell, the hospitality is truly amazing in Tunisia, and I am so thankful to everyone who made us feel so welcome in Tunisia!

Now, onto the food - we started our day off at a small, hole-in-the wall restaurant where a very cheerful man served us two classics: lablabi and ojja. Lablabi is a hearty chickpea stew made with harrisa (a spicy chili paste), pieces of bread, tuna and olives. A hearty and delicious start to the tour! The ojja (chicken and vegetables fried together with a lot of harissa and olive oil) may very well have been our favorite dish of this whole tour! Mopping up that caramelized chicken sitting in a pool of spicy harrisa and olive oil was just too good to be true.

After trying some awesome Tunisian tea following our first meal, we made our way to what seemed to be a pretty popular restaurant - El Baraka! Here, we tried an eggplant mix with lots of olive oil and tomatoes which we scooped up with more bread, as well as their signature grilled fish which was super smoky, with crispy skin and extremely tender and juicy meat!

On our way back to our accommodation we tried some Tunisian sweets called makroudh. They were amazing! We were also given these for free by the owners of the stand making them, we are so thankful! The Tunisian hospitality shines through here, once again!

Finally, the next day we meet up with two locals - Yassine and Yassine. Together we enjoy a giant Tunisian feast at the legendary Dar El Jeld, a restaurant a bit fancier than what we're usually used to! The interior was made in traditional Tunisian style and was stunningly beautiful. We tried a lot of food, ranging from fluffy cous cous (Tunisia's national dish), unbelievably tender lamb and stuffed phylo pastries (brik)! Everything was amazing, and on top of that, we were able to learn a lot about Tunisian culture thanks to our new friends, with whom we had a great time!

Tozeur in Tunisia - Couscous Legume in Restaurant Tozorous

After a tiring journey from Sousse on the overnight train and a long walk, with rucksacks, around Tozeur in South West Tunisia, Heather and I treated ourselves to a lunch in a local restaurant.

We came across the Restaurant Tozorous by happenstance, walking off the main road around the town. What caught our eye was the sign salle climatisée. However, there was no electric air conditioning, the lovely cool air in the dining room was the result of the natural insulation of the palm wood walls and roof.

We enjoyed a simple tomato, onion and olive oil starter, followed by couscous legume for Heather and a couscous royal for myself. The service was excellent, the food was great and the prices were very good value. If you are ever in Tozeur in the south west of Tunisia pop in for lunch like we did.

By the way, all the praise is richly deserved and we enjoyed eating real traditional couscous in a restaurant patronised by locals. تونس

During our foreign holidays, we enjoy the adventure of travelling independent of guides and tours.

The holiday videos are an attempt to capture some of the interesting sight and sounds of the countries we visit. This video was filmed and narrated by Matthew Wright and Heather Wright

Heather & I thank you for watching this video. Take a look at more of our original holiday travel videos, interviews & reportage on our YouTube channel: Life In Another Town

Trying Tunisian Food!

I made my way to the southern coast of the Mediterranean in the country of Tunisia! In the capital city of Tunis, my friend Seyf guided me through the busy streets and introduced me to some traditional Tunisian food!

Was it the Tunisian or the Tajins that screwed me over ?

Foreigner Tries Tunisian Couscous | الكسكسي التونسي

Couscous, called kosksi, is the national dish of Tunisia, and can be prepared in many ways. It is cooked in a special kind of double boiler called a kiska's in Arabic or couscoussière in French. The couscous used is typically fine-grained.

Meats, vegetables and spices are cooked in the lower pot. Cooking steam rises through vents into the container above. It is layered with whole herbs such as bay leaves and covered with a fine-grain couscous. The couscous pasta is therefore cooked with aromatic steam. During the cooking process, the couscous needs to be regularly stirred with a fork to prevent lumping, much as risotto is cooked. In Tunisian cuisine, the first main popular dish that is cooked from the north to the south is Couscous.

Called kosksi in the Tunisian dialect, it is a tiny granule made from steamed and dried durum wheat. It is the most popular national dish.

This small cafe located near Hamamatsucho station offers authentic Tunisian/East African cuisines which are halal and tasty. Highly recommended!
