Koper Slovenia | Best things to do and see in Koper

Koper Slovenia | Best things to do and see in Koper

Koper is the largest coastal city in Slovenia, and behind its harbour hides a marvellous medieval old town, which was once an island. Its Venetian-style houses, the romance of its small squares, the boats rocking in the harbour and the Italian atmosphere that pervades everything make this city the only port city in Slovenia and an important industrial and business centre. Koper was part of the Venetian Republic for over five centuries, which is visible in the town’s architecture.
In addition to Koper’s attractive cobblestone streets, squares, cosy cafés, restaurants and grilled seafood, an abundance of different architectural styles, is on display here, including Baroque, Gothic, Renaissance and Venetian. Wandering the old town will only take a few hours so you can pair Koper with another nearby activity.
Best things to do and see in Koper:
1. Muda Gate (Vrata Muda)
2. Prešeren Square (Prešernov trg)
3. Čevljarska Street (Čevljarska ulica)

How to Spend a Day in Koper - Our 3 Minute Guide

Koper in Slovenia ???????? is a hidden gem at the head of the Adriatic. Nestling in the gulf of Trieste this former Venetian Citadel was formerly an island just off the coast of what is now Slovenia. These days the land between the mainland and the island has been recialmed but there are plenty of remnants of the originl citadel.

The cruise dock is so close to the medieval town its a short 400m walk right into the centre of town. Highlights incude the loggia, Praetorian Palace, the Da Ponte Fountain, the cathedral and the bell tower. All within easy walking distance and easy to cram into your time ashore.

Thee is a small but lovely beach and the towns ambience is divine. It’great just to sit and enjoy a meal and some beer.

This is some place. We’d never heard of it until this cruise and its simply lovely.

???????? Koper, Piran & Portorož - Slovenia | Europe's Hidden Gem

Continuing our journey after a lovely 3-day stay in Ljubljana, we rented a car and drove to the small Slovenian coastline, which is only about 46km long, to visit the beautiful towns of Koper, Piran and Portorož and try to show you the things to see and do there,

It was not very difficult for us to pick a favourite. Piran is a cute little town with great architecture, great restaurants, a beautiful church (St. George's) on top of the hill, where you have awesome views of the city.

Porotorož is great for swimming but it is much bigger and more fancy, not really our vibe. The resorts can get quite expensive but if money is not an issue, you should definitely check it out.

Koper felt more like a regular city, and because of the port, it is not the best for swimming.

Overall we were super satisfied and brought many fond memories home, especially from the cozy Piran :)

I hope you guys enjoy!

Koper, Slovenia ► Video guide, 12 min. | 4K

Koper Capodistria is only commercial port in Slovenia and one of its oldest towns with a very rich history. Koper developed on a rocky island with the Roman name Capris. The longest reign over the city was that of the Venetian Republic (1279-1797), when Koper experienced economic (trade, salt production) and cultural prosperity (painting, music). The Venetian period is still echoed by the city architecture; despite numerous modern interventions, it has preserved its medieval character, with the city of Koper being a member of the European Association of Medieval Cities.

KOPER - Slovenia Travel Guide | Around The World

Koper is a city in southwestern Slovenia, with the other Slovenian coastal towns Ankaran, Izola, Piran, and Portorož, situated along the country's 47-kilometre (29-mile) coastline, in the Istrian Region, approximately five kilometres (3.1 miles) from its border with Italy. Having a unique ecology and biodiversity, it is considered an important national natural resource. The city's Port of Koper is the major contributor to the economy of the eponymous city municipality. With only one percent of Slovenia having a coastline, the influence that the Port of Koper also has on tourism was a factor in Ankaran deciding to leave the municipality in a referendum in 2011 to establish its own. The city is a destination on a number of Mediterranean cruising lines. In 2016, the city expects 65 cruise ship arrivals (for example: Norwegian Spirit, MSC Magnifica, Norwegian Jade, MS Rhapsody of the Seas...) with the season spanning from March to December. Koper is the main urban centre of the Slovenian Istria, with a population of about 25,000.

The city of Koper is officially bilingual, with both Slovene and Italian as official languages. Sights in Koper include the 15th-century Praetorian Palace and Loggia in Venetian Gothic style, the 12th-century Carmine Rotunda church, and the Cathedral of St Nazarius, with its 14th-century tower.

Koper is also one of the main road entry points into Slovenia from Italy, which lies to the north of the municipality. The main motorway crossing is at Spodnje Škofije to the north of the city of Koper. The motorway continues into Rabuiese and Trieste. Koper also has a rail connection with the capital city, Ljubljana. On the coast, there is a crossing at Lazaret into Lazaretto in Muggia municipality in Trieste province. The Italian border crossing is known as San Bartolomeo.

The Italian name of the city was anciently spelled as Capo d'Istria, and as such reported on maps and sources in other European languages. Modern names of the city include: Croatian: Kopar, Serbian: Копар, Kopar, German: Gafers.

First established during the Roman Empire, the port of Koper has played an important role in the development of the area. It is among the largest in the region and is one of the most important transit routes for goods heading from Asia to central Europe. In contrast with other European ports, which are managed by port authorities, the activities of the Port of Koper comprise the management of the free zone area, the management of the port area, and the role of terminal operator.

Koper's 15th-century Praetorian Palace is located on the city square. It was built from two older 13th-century houses that were connected by a loggia, rebuilt many times, and then finished as a Venetian Gothic palace. Today, it is home to the city of Koper’s tourist office.

The city's Cathedral of the Assumption was built in the second half of the 12th century and has one of the oldest bells in Slovenia (from 1333), cast by Master Jakob in Venice. The upper terrace is periodically open and offers a great view of the Bay of Trieste. In the middle of it hangs the Sacra Conversatione painting from 1516, one of the best Renaissance paintings in Slovenia, made by Vittore Carpaccio.

Koper, Slovenia : The quiet old town

Koper is the biggest port city of Slovenia. It lies close to italian border. Minutes away from the bigger italian town of Trieste. It seems to have a quiet old town. Just few minutes from here is Piran where situation is significantly different. More life. We had to see and share what we saw here in Koper but our preference here in slovenian Istria is Piran - a lovelly venetian old town.
