Durga Puja - biggest festival of the Bengalis

Religion teaches mankind about humanity and love. In India every festival is an opportunity to spread love and happiness among all.

One such festival - traditional yet modern, wrapped up in customs and also an excuse to take a break from the monotony of everyday life: The Durga puja. Durga puja is also popularly known as Sharadotsav or the autumnal festival. This festival is celebrated according to the dates of the traditional Hindu calendar, roughly between September and October.

Like many other Hindu festivals this too marks the triumph of good over evil. This South Asian festival celebrates the victory of goddess Durga over the Demon God Mahishasur. The festival of Durgotsav starts with the day of Mahalaya. The last five days of the festival are celebrated with great excitement. The sixth day of durga puja is called Shashti, the seventh day is known as shaptami, the eighth day is called ashthami and the final day or the tenth day being dashami.

During these last four days of Durga puja the goddess is believed to visit her maternal home along with her children Lord Ganesh, Lord Kartike as well as with Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Laxmi. Lord Shiva is also worshipped during these auspicious days of Durga puja as he is the Husband of Parvati, an incarnation of Goddess Durga.

Durga puja has evolved a lot during the past few centuries. Today this festival is not only about religion and customs. Durga puja is the largest outdoor art festival in the world. Since the 1990's the artisans of Bengal started experimenting with the outside structure of the puja pandal and started using various architectural designs and motifs.

Today the art of creating idols and innovative themed pandals has become a subject of study in the arts. Every year many artisans come up with thousands of new ideas relating to the themes in which the puja pandals are decorated.

The celebratory atmosphere starts with the day of Mahalaya. According to Hindu mythology this is the day when Goddess Durga descended from heaven to earth. During this day Bengalis wake up early in the morning to listen to the Devi Mahatmyam hymns that narrate the mythological story of Mahishasurmardini, another name for Goddess Durga. On the Eighth day of the puja, offerings of flowers and prayers are made to the Goddess of power and this ritual is called Pushpanjali.

On the last four days of Durga puja ritualistic dance prayers are organised. These prayers are known as aartis. During aarti the traditional drummers better known as the Dhaakis play their huge drums or Dhaks. These Dhakis are an intrinsic part of Durga puja.

These age-old traditions and festivals connect people from various parts of the world and bring them closer. Durga puja is one such occasion when breaking the barriers of social standing and monetary status people come together on one platform and enjoy themselves to their heart's fulfillment.

Ganapati Festival Mumbai 2018 | Let's Explore Season -2 |

Exploring the Mumbai Ganapati festival 2018

Marathi families living in Delhi celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi

Devotees giving a annual farewell to Lord Ganesh by immersing it into water and praying for next year to welcome Lord Ganesh again.

Ganesha Chaturthi is the Hindu festival celebrated on the birthday (rebirth) of the lord Ganesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati.
It is believed that Lord Ganesh bestows his presence on earth for all his devotees during this festival. It is the day when Ganesha was born. Ganesha is widely worshiped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune and traditionally invoked at the beginning of any new venture or at the start of travel. The festival, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi (festival of Ganesha) is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). The date usually falls between 19 August and 20 September. The festival lasts for 10 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi (fourteenth day of the waxing moon period).

While celebrated all over India, it is most elaborate in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Outside India, it is celebrated widely in Nepal and by Hindus in the United States, Canada, Mauritius,Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, Fiji, Trinidad & Toba
The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon). The date usually falls between 20 August and 20 September. The festival lasts for 10 or 12 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi. This festival is observed in the lunar month of bhadrapada shukla paksha chathurthi madhyahana vyapini purvabhadra. If Chaturthi prevails on both days, the first day should be observed. Even if chaturthi prevails for the complete duration of madhyahana on the second day, if it prevails on the previous day's madhyahana period even for one ghatika (24 minutes), the previous day should be observed.

Two to three weeks before Ganesh Chaturthi, artistic clay models of Lord Ganesha are made for sale by specially skilled artisans. They are beautifully decorated and depict Lord Ganesh in vivid poses. The size of these statues may vary from 3/4 of an inch to over 70 feet. The tallest Ganesha Idol made which stood 117 feet tall was situated in the city of Visakhapatnam in 2012.
Devotees taking idol of Ganesh to immerse in river or sea symbolizing a ritual see-off of the Lord in the journey towards his abode in Kailash taking away with him the misfortunes of his devotees.

Ganesh Chaturthi starts with the installation of these Ganesh statues in colorfully decorated homes and specially erected temporary structures mandapas (pandals) in every locality. The pandals are erected by the people or a specific society or locality or group by collecting monetary contributions. The pandals are decorated specially for the festival, either by using decorative items like flower garlands, lights, etc. or are theme based decorations, which depict religious themes or current events.

INDIA VLOG - day 1 _ GOING TO DELHI

Settimanalmente pubblicherò i prossimi episodi.
Stay tuned!!
***
After my trip to India, many of you asked me to tell my experience. However, I have always found it a great difficulty in having to tell it in a concise manner, there on my feet.
The risk was to diminish my experience or exasperate it.
TODAY I FINALLY TAKE A WAY TO TELL YOU, as completely as possible, combining what we have seen with our emotions. I speak in the plural because I shared the trip with a friend and I'm sure it would not have been the same without her.
This is the first episode of my story.
Weekly I will publish the next episodes.

Sri Sri Ganesh Puja Mahautsav & Fair, Konnagar

On the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Puja, the Sri Sri Ganesh Puja Mahautsav event & fair is organized at the Konnagar Town of the Hooghly District. Once again the road of C. S. Mukherjee Street is decorated with lighting and on either side of the street, there are numerous stalls displaying their wares and goods.

Like every year, this year also the venue is in the buzz for the event. During the evening, the entire region sets up for the celebration of the event. While there are various types of stalls on the road, selling out tasty snacks and goods of everyday needs, there is also a small ground alongside where different types of rides and playing equipment for the children is installed. The venue becomes the hallmark of entertainment for all the age groups in the evening for a few days.

Moreover, it’s the mandaps of Lord Ganesha on either side of the road that draws most of the attention of the crowds. People visit the mandaps, ask for His divine blessings and donate amounts in honor of the God. The idols of various shapes, sizes, and colors add a fair bit of charm in the entire set up of the puja mandaps.

The high pitched loud speakers, the variety of stalls displaying their wares and eatables, the involvement of people all add up to the spirit of the festival. Even though the event lasts for a few days, but it brings joy and happiness to the uncountable faces. Like any other festival, it also paints the moods of people with the magical brush of joy and happiness that matters the most for a happy and prosperous lifestyle.
