Fort Kochi Tourist Places | Kerala, Ep 1 | Food, History, Kathakali Dance & Shopping | DesiGirl Vlog

I travelled to Kerala in Nov 2022 and this is my first vlog from the series. In this episode, we are exploring the Fort Kochi area - the paradise for travellers. Places I have covered:

1. Chinese Fishing nets - This one is one of the key attractions of Fort Kochi. Chinese Fishing Nets are an indigenous way of catching fish. These nets are fixed on teak poles and bamboo. You will see 4-6 fishermen required to handle one fishing net. There are many Chinese Fishing nets installed at this spot with hundreds of fishermen at the job.

2. St. Francis Church - Located at the Vasco De Gama square at Fort Kochi, this is one of the oldest churches built by the Europeans in India. Visit it for the rich architecture and history. The video camera is not allowed inside the church.

3. Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica - This place is also known as 'Kotta Palli' in the local language. It is one of the 9 basilicas in Kerala. You must visit this church for its rich architecture, which definitely makes it one of the most impressive churches in India. It is a place of devotion as well as a centre of historic significance, endowed with architectural and artistic grandeur and colours of the gothic style.

4. Jew Town - This place is my personal favourite from Fort Kochi. It's a street full of antique shops selling unique souvenirs. This is the street which used to be dominated by Jewish people. Now there are barely 2-3 Jewish families left but it's a place you must visit to get a glimpse of the rich culture of Fort Kochi.

5. Pardesi Synagogue - More than a 100 yrs old building in the corner of Jew Town, you must visit this place to understand the arrival of Dutch and Jewish people in India. It houses many rare antiques. The synagogue (temple for Jewish people) woos many visitors and adds to the quaint charm of the Jew Town area in Fort Kochi.

6. Ginger Hotel Kerala Food - Visit this place for a beautiful view of the backwaters and mouthwatering food. You can easily spend 2-3 hrs soaking the beauty of the backwaters here.

7. Kathakali Dance - I visited Cochin cultural centre to watch the live performance of Kathakali dance and also the elaborated makeup process. Kathakali is one of the famous classical dances of India. Kerala is the place from where this story play genre of art originated.

Fort Kochi | Kerala Tourism | MM Travel Guide | Kochi Tourist Places | Ernakulam |

Fort Kochi (Portuguese: Cochim de Baixo Lower Kochi) is a region in the city of Kochi in the state of Kerala, India. This is part of a handful of water-bound regions toward the south-west of the mainland Kochi, and collectively known as Old Kochi or West Kochi. Adjacent to this is Mattancherry. In 1967, these three municipalities, along with a few adjoining areas, were amalgamated to form the Corporation of Cochin.

In the BC period, the region that is today known as Kerala was covered by mangrove woods. Turf and sand banks were created with the rise in sea-level which formed the shape of the coastal area as we see it today. The name Cochin implies co-chin, meaning like-China. It looked like China when the Chinese came to the region during the 14th century and installed Chinese nets. Mattancherry is the nerve town of old historic Cochin. In old Malayalam it is Maadan-cheri, from cheri meaning town. Maad or cow was the stamp of Old Royal Fort of Rajah of Cochin, who built his palace after the fall of Kodungallur or Muziris port due to a gigantic tsunami in 1341 AD.[citation needed] The Perumpadappu Swaroopam or the Fort of Rajah had its palace on the banks of the Calvathy River. Due to frequent wars between King Zamorin of Kozhikode and the western colonial forces, the Rajah left the place for Tripunithura. The king had his vaishnav leanings and the cow or maadu was his symbol.

Fort Kochi can be accessed from Ernakulam through roadways and water ways. Private buses and government transport buses travel from different parts of the city to Fort Kochi. Due to the high volume of tourists visiting the place dedicated low floor Volvo buses were introduced to this route by the government. Such buses are in use on the popular routes such as Cochin International Airport (CIAL), Vytila Mobility Hub and Kakanad Info Park.

Fort Kochi ( ഫോർട്ട് കൊച്ചി ) is a heritage town in the city of Kochi ( Cochin ), Kerala facing the Arabian Sea. The famous Fort Kochi beach is on the south-west coast of India attracting many tourists besides various ancient architectural significance to explore. Tracing the heritage and history of Fort Kochi take you back to the 15th century when the first colonial power of Portuguese came into this fishing village for trading. The word 'fort' was added to name this place later on when Fort Emmanuel was built by them. In 1503, one of the oldest European churches in India called Saint Francis Church was originally built by them in wood and the same was reconstructed in 1516. The body of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama was initially buried in this church and later on moved to Lisbon. The 160 years of Portuguese colonial possession ended when the Dutch captured Kochi. They demolished most of the churches except the Church of Saint Francis. From 1795 on wards British took the power till India's independence in the year 1947. Other main tourist attractions and places to visit in Fort Kochi include Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, Jewish Synagogue, Mattancherry Palace, Jain Temple, Southern Naval Command Maritime Museum, Dutch Cemetery, Chinese fishing nets etc. The international exhibition and contemporary art festival called Kochi Muziris Biennale ( KMB ) is of greatest significance in the recent history of Kerala Tourism backed by the Government of Kerala.
The local life of fishermen community can be easily spotted here when you walk away from this old town road as you see numerous fishing boats in the harbour as well as the Chinese fishing nets ( colloquially termed as Cheena vala ) standing on the beach. Apart from roadways for road trip , there are other waterways also to connect Fort Kochi even from the main city center. Cochin Carnival is the most famous festival conducted at Fort Kochi which reflects the blend of both Indian and European cultures adding scope to the Heritage tourism. The last two weeks of December is an absolute party, especially for those who travel to India for celebrating the New Year at Kochi. All these travel vibes uplift Kochi as one among the top historical travel destinations in India Tourism.
Kochi vibes always excite you to be a part of an art to feel you smart…… Moreover, yes... Kochi is a feeling!!
