The beach at Maya Bay is one of the most famous and photogenic places in Thailand, and it was the main thing responsible for bringing tourism to Phi Phi island. In fact, it’s now one of the most famous white sand beaches in the world.
Maya bay is OPEN now! After 3.5 years of closure due to over tourism and severe damage to the ecosystem!
Maya Bay is part of Phi Phi Leh island, which is located in the Andaman Sea of Thailand, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Phuket and about the same distance from Krabi.
There are six Phi Phi islands in total, with the two main islands being Phi Phi Leh and Phi Phi Don, and they’re all considered part of the Krabi province of Thailand.
Maya Bay was popularized by a Hollywood movie in 2000 called ‘The Beach,’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio. It opened peoples’ eyes to the natural beauty of the Thai islands.

Today we venture to the most beautiful island in the world!! One that is talked about and shared for decades! Phi phi island is actually an archipelago of 6 islands Maya bay, Phi Phi don and Phi Phi Leh form part of the 6 which we visit today!
If you haven’t been here yet, this is something you cannot miss out on, the iconic long tail boats, limestone rock faces and of course that turquoise water! We were in awe of this magical paradise!
Maya bay got its fame from featuring in the 1999 movie “The Beach” Starring Leonardo DiCaprio. For many years boats filled with eager tourists used to visit this beach - around 5000 people per day!
The beach closed due to severe damage to the environment and now the beach is finally open with some conditions:
Only 400 guests per day
If you visit without a tour boat you need to pay 400 baht national park fee
No swimming allowed
You have a limited time at this island (around 1 hour)
We recommend taking a private boat if you would like to send more time there!

A half day boat tour can be done by longtail boat or speedboat. A half day tour by longtail boat cost 700 THB and a half day tour by speedboat cost 1300 THB. The duration of a half day tour is 4 hours. Half day tours are available from 9:00 in the morning till 14:00 in the afternoon. Tickets for a half day tour can be bought everyone on the main island Ko Phi Phi Don.

If you're ever in South Thailand, we recommend going to Koh Phi Phi Islands. Everything was breath taking - it was unreal!! Here's the list of places we visited and a bit more about them. Koh Phi Phi Islands consists of 6 islands, some points of interest include:
Monkey Beach: you can see the monkeys playing around, climbing the cliffs! Of course, they are a bit naughty ;)
Phi Le Lagoon: we canoed into the lagoon and saw the most amazing blue waters
Viking Cave: no longer open but famous for the families that live there off harvesting special bird's nests that are in high demand on the Asian market for healing purposes.
Maya Bay: The movie The Beach was filmed here starring Leonardo Dicaprio
Loh Lana or Nui Bay: we actually stopped here to snorkel for a bit, it has beautiful coves & reefs!

After we took our parents to Krabi, we wanted to head over to Koh Phi Phi. The Phi Phi Islands are one of the most gorgeous places we've been in Thailand so we really wanted our parents to see it too! Unfortunately the weather did not want to cooperate with us....
Our parents were really interested in all the fire shows on the beach and the Koh Phi Phi parties! Both nights we spent on Koh Phi Phi we made sure to go to the beach to watch some fire shows. Our parents loved them!!
The next day we went on a boat tour to Phi Phi Leh and Maya Bay! It was so rainy and wavy!!!! My mom (and I) were terrified! lol! You can tell that Carles' parents are the ones who are good on boats! We managed to go to Maya Bay, the Pileh Lagoon, we SNORKELED WITH BLACKTIP REEF SHARKS, stopped by to see some monkeys, and returned to Koh Phi Phi!
Even with all the rain and the waves, it was a great day!

Ko Phi Phi Le Island, Thailand | Phi Phi Island, Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave | Phuket, Krabi
This review is for those travelers looking to check out Ko Phi Phi Le (including Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon), just outside Phi Phi Island in Thailand. We traveled there while we were staying in Phuket, but there are a few routes that can be taken to get there as well from Krabi or other local places.

You can only get to Phi Phi Island by boat. Coming from Phuket, it's around 1000 Baht for a roundtrip ticket and about a 1 ½ to 2 hour boat ride to Phi Phi. Boats leave only a few times throughout the day with the earliest ferry leaving Phuket at 8:30am and heading back from Phi Phi at 2:30pm so if you are making a day trip there without staying the night, you will have only around 4-5 hours at most on the Island.
On the boat over there are food and drink available for purchase (including local beers). Cash only. The boat has seating up on the top deck which is open, or on the middle and lower levels which are covered. Getting to the dock earlier will ensure that you get a good seat.
While there are many things to do on Phi Phi, many choose to venture to Ko Phi Phi Lee. You can do a group tour via speed boat, which is typically with 20-30 other people, not very fun. Or you can get a more authentic and private tour on a longtail boat. Upon arrival in Phi Phi, you’ll be met by several longtail boat drivers willing to take you to the island for around 2000 Baht. Definitely worth the extra money. We went with a group of 4 of us and there was plenty of room, they stop where you want to and its so much more enjoyable than a speed boat.
*If you have back problems or get motion sickness, the longtail boats can be difficult when the waters are rough being very bumpy.
Its a nice ride over to Ko Phi Phi Le, about 20-30 minutes. The popular things to do once Ko Phi Phi Le is to visit Maya Bay, which was made famous by Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie The Beach. We recommend going early in the morning to beat the crowds otherwise it'll be way overcrowded with hundreds of other people. If you choose to stop at Maya Bay beach, there is a 400 Baht entrance fee to get onto the beach.
The next stop we recommend is at Pileh lagoon which is very scenic and a bit more low key compared to Maya bay while allows for a more privacy and seclusion. Our longtail boat driver pulled into a small beach area where we were the only ones for about 30 minutes where we were able to enjoy snorkeling and swimming in the gorgeous waters of the Lagoon.
The trip back to Phi Phi Island is very scenic as you will be passing several great photo opportunities, coves and Pirate Cave which is popular with the tourists.
Once back on Phi Phi Island, you probably only have a short amount of time left before the ferry departs (probably less than an hour). Use this time to explore the local shops and restaurants or head to the other side of Phi Phi Island to Loh Delum Beach to relax before boarding the ferry back to Phuket. You can walk at least 100 years at Loh Delum beach and still be able to stand.

Koh Phi Phi or Phi Phi Islands are located in the middle of the Andaman sea, 42 km away from Amphoe Mueang. It is a part of Nopharat Thara Beach – Phi Phi Islands national park which contains 2 big islands – Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Le, and 4 smaller islands nearby – Koh Yung, Koh Mai Phai, Koh Pida Nok and Koh Pida Nai.
Koh Phi Phi also features a vibrant NIGHTLIFE, with Tonsai Beach containing dozens of beach bars and restaurants and lively Tonsai Village consisting of a maze of shops, bars, and restaurants. Smaller beaches around the island are alternatively ideal for honeymooners, families, those on a budget, and those looking for the ultimate luxury resort retreat.
Phi Phi Le was featured in the Hollywood blockbuster movie The Beach, a story about the ultimate secluded island beach. Maya Bay was a suitable choice as it epitomizes the stunning beauty of these islands: a bay of pellucid aquamarine water surrounded by towering limestone cliffs that harbors an arcing, white sand beach.
The waters surrounding the Phi Phi Islands are filled with exotic marine life, including docile leopard sharks, and Snorkeling and diving day Trip rival lounging on the beach as top activities on Koh Phi Phi.

This review is for those travelers looking to check out Ko Phi Phi Le (including Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon), just outside Phi Phi Island in Thailand. We traveled there while we were staying in Phuket, but there are a few routes that can be taken to get there as well from Krabi or other local place’s.

You can only get to Phi Phi Island by boat. Coming from Phuket, it's around 1000 Baht for a roundtrip ticket and about a 1½ to 2 hour boat ride to Phi Phi. Boats leave only a few times throughout the day with the earliest ferry leaving Phuket at 8:30am and heading back from Phi Phi at 2:30pm so if you are making a day trip there without staying the night, you will have only around 4-5 hours at most on the Island.
On the boat over there are food and drink available for purchase (including local beers). Cash only. The boat has seating up on the top deck which is open, or on the middle and lower levels which are covered. Getting to the dock earlier will ensure that you get a good seat.
While there are many things to do on Phi Phi, many choose to venture to Ko Phi Phi Lee. You can do a group tour via speed boat, which is typically with 20-30 other people, not very fun. Or you can get a more authentic and private tour on a longtail boat. Upon arrival in Phi Phi, you'll be met by several longtail boat drivers willing to take you to the island for around 2000 Baht. Definitely worth the extra money. We went with a group of 4 of us and there was plenty of room, they stop where you want to and its so much more enjoyable than a speed boat.
*If you have back problems or get motion sickness, the longtail boats can be difficult when the waters are rough being very bumpy.
Its a nice ride over to Ko Phi Phi Le, about 20-30 minutes. The popular things to do once Ko Phi Phi Le is to visit Maya Bay, which was made famous by Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie The Beach. We recommend going early in the morning to beat the crowds otherwise it'll be wav overcrowded with hundreds of other people. If you choose to stop at Maya Bay beach, there is a 400 Baht entrance fee to get onto the beach.
The next stop we recommend is at Pile lagoon which is very scenic and a bit more low key compared to Maya bay while allows for a more privacy and seclusion. Our longtail boat driver pulled into a small beach area where we were the onlv ones for about 30 minutes where we were able to enjoy snorkeling and swimming in the gorgeous waters of the Lagoon.
The trip back to Phi Phi Island is very scenic as you will be passing several great photo opportunities, coves and Pirate Cave which is popular with the tourists.
Once back on Phi Phi Island, you probably only have a short amount of time left before the ferry departs (probably less than an hour). Use this time to explore the local shops and restaurants or head to the other side of Phi Phi Island to Loh Delum Beach to relax before boarding the ferry back to Phuket. You can walk at least 100 years at Loh Delum beach and still be able to stand.

The Viking Cave (in Thai: ถ้ำไวกิ้ง) is located on the island Ko Phi Phi Lee, which is part of the Koh Phi Phi islands group, in the Krabi province in Thailand. The viking cave is a limestone cave in Thailand (Thai cave) and is located near Maya Bay and the pileh lagoon.
The Viking Cave is a popular sightseeing stop during half day and full day travel tours around the Phi Phi islands. The Viking Cave at Ko Phi Phi Lee (sometimes also called Koh Phi Phi Leh) is not open to tourists. Longtail boats and speedboats will slow down their boats close to the entrance of the Viking Cave for tourists to see the cave and take a photo of the cave. The large limestone cave is about 3 square kilometers in size and has a height of about 10 to 15 meters.
In the Viking Cave there are paintings found on the cave walls at the bottom of the tall limestone cave. The cave wall paintings were drawn by sailors and traders taking shelter in the cave during the monsoon storms. There are paintings of different types of boats (one painting is believed to be a Viking ship (Scandinavian Drakkar Longship).
The Viking Cave is also known as a harvest location of edible bird nests. During their breeding period birds called swifts / swiftlets / sea swallows build their bird nests in and around the large limestone cave. The swiftlets build their edible bird nests in inaccessible places: higher up the walls, ledges, and ceilings of the limestone cave. This makes it difficult for the local people living at the Phi Phi islands to collect the valuable and edible bird nests. The tiny white bird nests are a key ingredient for bird nest soup. Bird net soup is popular because of the high nutritional value and exquisite flavor. Bird nests are considered as a delicacy and health booster.

While staying on the Phi Phi Islands, we had to do a full day boat tour to some of the iconic places on the islands! Phi Phi Islands are made up of six different islands and many famous places - including Maya Bay!
Maya Bay is known as the most beautiful beach in the world! It became famous after it was the filming location of the Hollywood movie 'The Beach' starring Leonardo DiCaprio. So many tourists wanted to visit Maya Bay that all the wildlife started to die. Thailand closed the beach for over 3 years to try to help it recover....and it has now reopened!
Our tour started close to the pier on Phi Phi Don. We then went to Shark Point, Bamboo Island, Monkey Beach, Viking Cave, Pileh Bay Lagoon, and finally the famous Maya Bay! After visiting Maya Bay we watched the sunset from the boat. We then snorkeled with glow in the dark plankton and returned back to Phi Phi Don! We definitely recommend doing a day tour like this when you go to the Koh Phi Phi! It was such a fun day!!

Pileh lagoon, Koh Phi Phi. When on Phi Phi you must visit Phi Phi Leh which is the uninhabited island across from Phi Phi Don. Phi Phi Leh is the location where the movie 'The Beach' was filmed. It is easy to take a longtail taxi boat over to the island which takes about 20-25 mins to reach the famous Maya bay. Maya bay is the popular beach where people flock to, you are not allowed to enter the beach from the shore as numbers are now limited so entrance is from the floating pier at the rear of the beach. Make sure you visiting the amazing Pileh lagoon whilst on the island. This lagoon is spectacular with turquoise waters and towering limestone cliffs. You can snorkel here and if the tide is high you and jump in from the boat! This its must on any itinerary!
