In January 2021, Owen Grobler and I visited the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park during an exceptionally wet rainy season, which had transformed the park into a lush, green paradise. We had two full weeks in the Kgalagadi and explored all three main camps, Twee Rivieren, Nossob and Mata-Mata, as well as most of the wilderness camps.

In this short film, I share all the highlights from this amazing green kalahari trip, including some of the best lion, leopard and cheetah sightings I've ever had in the Kgalagadi! So sit back, relax and enjoy our adventure.

Our First Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park Adventure Vlog | Ep 1 | Twee Rivieren to Mata Mata

This is our first time visiting the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and it was an amazing adventure. Beautiful scenery and heavily corrugated road. The camps are top class and this was just our first day.
We spent the first night at Twee Rivieren and then made our way to Mata Mata.
We are camping in Gunnland our 79 series Land Cruiser and it remains our favourite way to see Africa!

We accidentally shot this trip with an incorrect frame rate - so enjoy this a a more vlog style episode from us :)

Rooiputs Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Filming African wildlife behind-the-scenes series PREVIEW

In this wildlife filmmaking behind-the-scenes series, Rob and Andy travel to Rooiputs in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Rooiputs is the name of the waterhole, campsite, and lodge 25km up the Nossob river from Twee Rivieren/Two Rivers. On this safari our primary objective is to find and film caracal, but we are also looking for general Kalahari wildlife: lion, cheetah, leopard, raptors, gemsbok, cape cobra, and all the smaller species that make this part of the world so special.

The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a massive game reserve and national park in the Kalahari. It occupies an area of 38 000 square kilometres. The reserve spans both South Africa and Botswana and borders Namibia. Rooiputs campsite and lodge are across from Rooiputs waterhole, on the Botswana side of the dry Nossob riverbed that marks the border between South Africa and Botswana. The harsh Kalahari environment, vast red dunes, and ancient riverbeds support a fascinating variety of desert-adapted species, making this conservation area a very popular destination for wildlife photography and cinematography. Unlike most of our adventures, in this series we are only visiting one location and thoroughly exploring a small section of the park in search of the elusive caracal. Follow along as we set up camp in the unfenced wilderness campsite and attempt to capture footage of the park's diverse and majestic wildlife.

We don't make much money from these videos. So if you like what we do, please consider supporting us here on YouTube:

The playlist for this series can be found here:

Filmed and edited by Robert Hofmeyr and Andrew Caldwell.

Behind-the-scenes shot on a GoPro Hero 11. Timelapses filmed on a GoPro Hero 10. For the telephoto wildlife shots we used a Canon 200-400mm f4 lens on a Red V-Raptor camera. Aerials filmed using a Mavic 3 Pro.

The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park stretches across South Africa and Botswana and is one of the most popular National Parks in Southern Africa! But be warned: if you don't plan your trip to the Kgalagadi carefully, you might be very disappointed, not only because the Kalahari Desert is a place of extreme temperatures, but also because the roads are bad, animals numbers are relatively low and the accommodation options vary greatly.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park vs Kruger National Park ????????

South Africa is blessed with numerous wild spaces and national parks. Perhaps the best known are the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and it's more famous counterpart, The Kruger National Park. Both are special places where it's possible to disengage completely from the world and experience nature at it's most raw.

Both parks have aspects that will appeal to some more than others, so this shootout video, where I compare the Kgalagadi vs The Kruger, based on my own experiences in both parks, will show the pluses and minuses of both.

When I set out to make this video, I was almost certain that I knew which would come out ahead, but, I surprised myself when the results were tallied. As I said, this is my own subjective opinion, I would love to hear your views, so let me know in the comments.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park Twee Rivieren to Mata Mata

2021 trip to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park, spending a little over a week on an overlanding road trip around the Kgalagadi. In episode 1, we shuttle between Twee Rivieren and Mata Mata as well as taking a detour across the dunes to the Nossob River, with a 2 night stay at the stunning Kalahari Tented Camp.

Some awesome game viewing with lions, cheetahs and the greatest treat of all, a leopard chilling on a low tree branch less than 150 metres from the road. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park really is one of my favourite game reserves in South Africa. Although it's becoming more and more popular, with the accompanying increase in traffic and difficulty securing a booking, it's still so well worth the effort in reaching this remote spot.

Next episode we will travel overland across the Kalahari dunes to an upmarket lodge close, iXaus in the south west of the Kgalagadi National Park, close to the Namibian border, a real treat. And, the best of all, perfect timing brought us close up with a cheetah family.

Live your adventure

Twee Rivieren rest camp is arguably the most underrated camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. It has the best facilities of all the camps in the park and game viewing around Twee Rivieren is some of the best in the whole Kgalagadi! This is due to the fact that you can drive up either the Nossob- or Auob riverbeds, giving you a greater variety of landscapes in which to search for than the other rest camps of the Kgalalagadi.

Twee Rivieren, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Kalahari | Campsite Review

Twee Rivieren is the main camp of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. It is in the heart of the Kalahari, 250 km from Upington. It is part of Sanparks. It is a very well organized camp with neat and clean ablutions, a shop and gas station. The game viewing is just exquisite, not to mention the beautiful red Kalahari dunes. This is a place that everybody should visit at least once.

Kgalagadi - the Dusty Season Ep1 (or 5-day cricket in the Kgalagadi)

We visit the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park during August and experience strong winds and dust. Still, we see amazing things: Leopard cubs playing, cheetahs stalking and calling, bizarre giraffe behaviour and more... In this video we stay at Rooiputs and Kieliekrankie.

About the secondary title: The game of 5-day cricket has been compared to watching paint dry and it can certainly be boring at times. But the thing is that even though nothing may be happening, something COULD happen at any moment. Kgalagadi is very much like that.

If you want to skip to the highlights, here are the chapter markers:
0:00 Intro
1:48 Rooiputs campsite
3:44 Leopard cubs
8:25 Cheetah stalk
10:45 Cheetah call
12:40 Kieliekrankie

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park SA May 2023

While the KGalagadi Transfrontier park is not a Big Five destination, its a unique landscape of red dunes form a startling backdrop to game drives.
Despite being a less popular park than others, it is a great place to enjoy a game drive away from the crowd and camp at one of the campsites in the park.

Alone in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park - Only 9 vehicles in the Park - Kgalagadi Photography Ep 8

Kgalagadi Photography in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
Join us on the most quiet game drive in three decades in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park during Covid 19 lockdown. We had some essential service work to complete in the Northern Cape and also took a day to do a game drive in the Park and film it for our subscribers and the many Kalahari addicts on our channel that want to know if their famous park is still standing. We were one of a total of 9 vehicles in the park and only 4 on the Mata Mata road. Also only the 5th vehicle in over a month to visit Mata Mata camp as a day visitor since the Park opened for day visitors.
Pack your vehicles and start booking as the people are extremely eager to visit the park after the months of lockdown as the Park is opening up for accommodation soon.
