The City Made Famous For The Klondike Gold Rush | Canada Over The Edge

50 kilometers east of the Alaska border in the heart of Canada's Yukon Territory, the Klondike Highway leads to Dawson City. Dawson City is located on the shores of the Klondike river, a northern gem surrounded by a soaring rugged landscape holding secrets of the past. While the region has been home to First nation's people for centuries, the town site was built more recently, at the height of the 1897 Klondike Gold Rush.

Retracing the Klondike Gold Rush - The Yukon, Canada

Known for its wilderness landscapes, wildlife and striking natural phenomena, the Yukon in north-west Canada is larger than life. This is a land rich with dramatic mountain vistas, wild rivers and crystal clear lakes. Southern Yukon has vast forests as far as the eye can see, and in North Yukon the tundra rolls on forever. In summer, you can enjoy the midnight sun extending your fun into the wee hours and in winter you won't want to miss the mystery of the northern lights. However, what makes the Yukon so well known is gold.
The Klondike Gold Rush
The Klondike Gold Rush took place at the end of the nineteenth century. Thousands of people streamed into the Yukon in search of gold and, at the peak of the gold rush, Dawson City was the biggest city north of Seattle and west of Winnipeg. Writers of the time in particular helped to immortalise the heady days of the gold rush. You can still see many signs of the gold rush when you visit, whether you hike the famous Chilkoot Trail or visit the historic city of Dawson, where the Palace Grand Theatre and Diamond Tooth Gertie's Gambling Hall put on nightly shows in true gold rush style.
Is it still possible to find gold in the Yukon?
Are you feeling lucky? There's still plenty of gold out there. It's just a matter of looking in the right place. Tour companies in Dawson City offer gold panning tours. If you're more serious, you'll need to check with Yukon Government about where you're permitted to pan.

Operating gold dredge in the Klondike

This film was shot in the Klondike gold fields near Dawson City, Yukon, by Les Millen, probably in about 1960.

The Restoration of Dredge No. 4 National Historic Site

Dredge No.4 is a massive gold mining machine located in the gold fields near Dawson City, Yukon, which mined alluvial gold on the Yukon River from 1913 until 1959. Commemorated as a National Historic Site, for years shipwrights have been working to restore and stabilize this amazing piece of Klondike history. You can tour this incredible site commemorating the legacy of corporate mining history in the north from May to September each year.

Canada Road Trip: Best Things To Do In The Yukon

In this video, we share some of the best things to do in the Yukon, including Whitehorse, Dawson, Kluane National Park, and more!

Welcome to the Yukon!

Known for its dramatic landscapes, vast wilderness, and the famous Klondike Gold Rush, the Yukon has been capturing people's imaginations for years. With four-legged creatures far outnumbering humans, Canada's tallest mountain peaks, and the world's largest non-polar glacier, the Yukon is a true paradise for adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts.

We started our journey in Whitehorse, the Yukon's capital city. From here, we toured the SS Klondike, ate some delicious food in Whitehorse's oldest buildings, saw heaps of wildlife, and caught a glimpse of the Northern Lights. We then went to Dawson, the worlds most famous gold rush town. While walking around the old boardwalk streets was incredible enough, we also went gold panning, toured the massive dredge #4, watched a Cancan show at the oldest casino in the country, and took a river cruise on a paddle-wheeler. We then drove up the infamous Dempster Highway all the way to Eagle Plains, past the Arctic Circle and into the Northwest Territories. After coming back and spending another night in Dawson, we drove to Kluane National Park for one of the most epic flightseeing tours we've ever experienced.

We explored the Yukon from August 16 - September 6th, 2017!
