Life on Fanning Island (Kiribati)

Tabuaeran, also known as Fanning Island or Fanning Atoll (both Gilbertese and English names are recognised) is one of the Line Islands of the central Pacific Ocean, and part of Kiribati. It is an atoll located at 3°51′36″N 159°21′52″WCoordinates: 3°51′36″N 159°21′52″W. The land area is 33.73 sq.km, and the population is 2.000.

At some 900 miles distant, Tabuaeran is one of the closest landfalls to the Hawaiian Islands, and the atoll was possibly used as a stopover by the Polynesians who first settled Hawaiʻi. Artifacts have been discovered that indicate possible early settlements by people from Polynesia—probably the Cook Islands or Tonga.

Kiribati, a drowning paradise in the Central Pacific.

5 Return to Fanning Island, (Tabuaeran) 2023

Republic of Kiribati. We first visited Fanning Island in 2010. Now, in 2023, we visit the island for a second time. The children entertainers are now adult entertainers. Also, improvements are noted. Fanning now has some solar energy. There remains no washroom facilities for cruise visitors. Do they yet have toilets on the island? Not sure, but maybe chemical ones??
This time there is a lot of ground water on land. Is it caused by ocean level rising? According to one person, the answer is 'no'. Rather it is rain water that they rely on. This person says that no ocean level rise has been noted here.
