Jerusalem | King David's Tomb & The Room of the Last Supper

Israel video tour with David Hyman, professional tour guide. While visiting Jerusalem's Old City, don't miss this compact compound on Mount Zion. It houses some of Jerusalem's most important and holy sites. King David was the founder of Jerusalem, as described in the Book of Samuel. David chose the location for political reasons, so he can unite the 12 tribes who could all agree to Jerusalem as the capital as it was not part of any tribe's territory. The Biblical reference to David's tomb mentions that he was buried in The City of David but the tomb was never found. During the Crusader Period (13th Century AD) the tradition of David's tomb was relocated to its present location, on Mount Zion and it has been here since. David's tomb is an active synagogue with an orthodox community present at all times. It is possible to visit, but please be aware of the dress code protocol and avoid photography on the Sabbath.
The second floor of the building houses possibly the most famous room in the world. The room of the Last Supper, also known as the SEnacle. Once again, we have tradition. history and politics all in one location creating great confusion to all. The scripture does not offer a clear description of the whereabouts of the upper room. In the Byzantine period, a church was built here and one of the chapels was dedicated to the last supper. The Crusaders renovated that room during the 12th century and since then it is considered the location. The room switched hands many times and all the religions have claimes over it. For the past 50 years, the room is managed by Israel's Ministry of Religious Affairs and the entrance is free and open to all. There are many Arabic inscriptions on the walls because, under the Ottoman rule, the room was part of a mosque dedicated to King David, referred to in the Qoran as Nabi Daoud ( Prophet David)
Another monumental building is the Dormition abbey but it is closed because of the COVID and we could not enter. So I could only record it from the exterior.

Thanks, Shiri for joining me as we explore more of Jerusalem, love doing this together with you...

The Tomb of King David in Mount Zion Jerusalem #israel #jerusalem #tourguide #david #jesus #bible

The Tomb of King David is a really enigmatic place.
In this video I want to show you how it looks like today. A Jewish synagogue with a big medieval sarcophagus in it representing the burial place of David.
Although the Bible says he is buried in the City of David, ancient traditions point out this place. In addition that, there is a huge underground space, a cave, under the current building that is yet to be discovered. We know of this cave thanks to reports of Christian pilgrims of the 14th century and even an Italian explorer of the 19th century report it. Radar scans conducted by the Israeli Authority of Antiquities indicate that indeed there is an underground space that is yet to be discovered and excavated, but as for now it seems like we will need some patience before we get new answers.

Regardless of the authenticity of the place as the Tomb of David, it is a moving place, with great energy. If you visit - be sure to use the opportunity for a prayer and meditation to connect with God, with the soul of this righteous King.

Check out this fantastic video!

King David’s Tomb Mark is a large stone cenotaph (burial mark) inside a Romanesque-style building on Mount Zion.

Since the Middle Ages the site is venerated as the Tomb of King David, although the Bible states that he was buried elsewhere: “Then David slept with his ancestors and was buried in the city of David.” (I Kings 2:10).

History of the Tomb of King David
התנך records the crowning of David and his establishment of a new Capital. Although the new capital is more known by the name Jerusalem, when it is founded, the city is titled “The City of David” (II Samuel 5:6-10). Later the Bible records David’s burial in the city and many of his successors. The location of the royal tomb of Biblical Jerusalem is still uncertain, although some claim its remains lie in the southern slopes of the City of David.

Perhaps the lack of clear evidence for the tombs of the Davidic royal dynasty led to a medieval assumption that they are really on the Southern-Western hill of Jerusalem, known today as Mount Zion. The earliest record for this tradition is from a Muslim source from the 10th century. The current tomb mark of King David on Mount Zion is within a building whose Romanesque style dates it to the time of the Crusaders. Furthermore, the large burial mark (cenotaph) with its big flower decoration is also common to the Crusaders.

Being a holy site, the tomb mark was never excavated, although a ground-penetrating radar survey indicated a big cavity beneath it.

Visiting King David’s Tomb Mark on Mount Zion
Since 1948 the tomb mark is under Israeli control. The tomb mark became a very popular Jewish pilgrimage destination, and to this day a synagogue operates in its building. Visitors to the tomb are requested to be dressed modestly and men are expected to cover their heads.

Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.

In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)

Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water, and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many-faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be implanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

The Tomb of King David is one of the most sacred sites for the Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Nonetheless, according to the researchers, there is no certainty that this is in fact King David’s burial site. The Bible mentions that King David was buried in the City of David, which is located at the foot of the Temple Mount. We know from the bible that some of the kings were buried in a place called the Garden of Uzza- but its location was not identified to this day.

The tradition that locates the Tomb of King David in this site was first documented in the 9th century by the Muslims and adopted over the years by many believers.

The structure that contains the grave is actually the “crypt”, the underground hall of the crusader church. The building was renovated into its current shape during the 14th century by Franciscan monks, the custodians of the Holy Land.

During the 16th century the Franciscan monks were expelled by the Muslims, and the building became a mosque, serving for hundreds of years as a prayer house for Muslims, who consider King David to be one of their prophets.

Today the site is visited mainly by Jews, and it is run in a synagogue model. The tombstone is in the interior room, with separate entrances for men and women. At the center of the room is a tomb covered by a cloth. On the back of the burial coffin you can see an alcove in the wall, perhaps a remnant of an ancient synagogue which was mentioned in the Byzantine era as one of the seven synagogues that were located on Mount Zion.

In the past, colorful tiles decorated the walls, when the place served as a mosque. These were Iznik tiles, named after the city in Turkey where they were manufactured 200 years ago. These tiles were shattered in an atrocious vandalism attack.

On the floor on top of the tomb, there is the Cenacle, one of the sacred sites of Christianity. The external courtyard (on the exit from the tomb’s compound to the left) lays an interior courtyard surrounded by arches from the Franciscan monastery, which used to occupy this place during the 14th century. This kind of a closed courtyard is characteristic of many monasteries in Europe, known as “Cloisters”. The courtyards were meant to provide a quiet and safe place for monks and priests who lived in the church compounds. The rooms have small windows and they were built behind the vestibule. The roofed halls provided shelter from the rain and the access to the open air was through the main hall. A water well was dug under the courtyard. In monasteries or other churches, the courtyard serves for the cultivating of ornamental plants, vegetable gardens and even raising animals.

On the roof of the building there is an impressive observation point, and a mosque’s minaret, built by the Turks during the 16th century following the Christians’ expulsion from Mount Zion. The compound then became a “khan”- a guest house for caravans that arrived in Jerusalem after the closure of the city’s gates at nighttime.

Today the students of “Yeshivat Hatfutsot”, who come from all over the world, live in the rooms that are scattered on the first floors of the compound. In one of the adjacent halls, the Jews light candles in honor of King David.

Those who are interested can visit a number of additional sites in Mount Zion: The Holocaust Cellar, the Dormition Abbey, Oscar Schindler’s Grave and the Church of Saint Peter in Gallicantu.

My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
